James is a special kid who does not talk much and is afraid of strangers. Whenever I took him to the supermarket with me, he would often break down from overstimulation, and I almost gave up trying to take him out of the house until he met Mckella. She was the sweetest cashier lady, and they clicked instantly.
Since then, he would be the one who wanted to hand her the money, or he would try to help her pack our bags. We would always look for Mckella and wait for her, no matter how long the line was.
On that day, we were standing in the cash register line when an old guy started raising his voice. He was screaming at Mckella about his voucher expiration dates as she tried to explain that she could not accept his discount card. I held my son's hand closer, knowing how scared he could get in unusual situations.

The day before my 86th birthday, I received a call from my daughter that turned my world upside down.
"Mom, listen," my daughter sighed. "Ethan and I got a call this morning. It was a woman claiming to be our birth mother. She said she's been searching for us for years and even sent adoption papers as proof. Ethan wants to meet her. But I need to know... why didn't you tell us?"
I was speechless. The girl who once wanted a closed adoption had reached out after all these years.
"I... I didn't think it mattered," I finally managed to say, my voice shaky as I felt my hands tremble. "I'm so sorry. I'll tell you whatever you need to know now. But what does this have to do with my 86th birthday?"
"Mom, she's coming into town tomorrow, and she doesn't live in Pasadena anymore. This might be our only chance. And to be honest, I'm upset you kept this from us. Ethan is, too. When Madison’s husband died, their daughter Trudy, who had been eight, had to grow up getting used to life without a father. It wasn’t easy for them; earning enough to eat was difficult, but Madison somehow managed to keep herself and her daughter afloat.
"We need to go to the store to pick out my dress for my classmate’s birthday," Trudy said one day.
"Yes, yes, let’s go," her mom replied, masking her worry with feigned excitement.
However, when Madison saw the price tags on the dresses, she realized the money she had wouldn’t be enough. Determined, she went to a fabric store and bought a similar material.
"Just you wait, baby, you’ll have a dress soon," she promised.
It took her all night to sew the dress, but the result was perfect. "Thank you, Mom, I love it," Trudy said.
But when they arrived at the party, they quickly caught the attention of the rich kids and their parents, who began laughing at Trudy's outfit.

Single mom Lisa moved to a new town with her son, Mike, after her husband passed away. It was supposed to be a fresh start, but Lisa couldn't help but worry about how Mike would adjust to a new school — it's always tough.
