Haweswater Reservoir in the Lake District in Cumbria, England. This body of water has an interesting story.
Haweswater was originally a smaller natural body of water, whose name probably derives from the Old Norse or Old English, "Hafr"s lake."
In 1929 construction of a dam began, to the disgust and outrage of many who lived in the valley. Thus, two villages, Measand and Mardale Green, located in what one newspaper described as "one of the most secluded and peaceful places in the Lake District", were threatened with flooding. Both villages were apparently a few hundred years old.
Before the dam was completed, the villagers and farmers who lived in the valley were moved and their homes were demolished. The local church was also demolished and the bodies in the churchyard were exhumed and moved to Shap for reburial. The stone from the church was used to build the water take-off tower by the shore (photo in comment section).
The dam was completed by 1935/36, which drastically raised the water level (approximately 28 metres or 95 feet), thus altering the valley forever.
It is possible to see the ruins of the village of Mardale Green when the water level is low (photos in comment section).
Today, the reservoir supplies about 25% of northwest England’s water.
Although I visited the reservoir today, I was a bit lazy so I stole Mick Knapton"s photo taken from a good viewpoint on the fells above. . .

This Polovtsian helmet was discovered during excavations in 1981 at the Chingul mound near the village of Wealthy in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine.
The Polovtsians, also known as the Kipchaks, were a nomadic Turkic people who inhabited a vast territory spanning from southern Russia, eastern Ukraine, to Central Asia. They were known for their warrior culture, and many of their statues depict male warriors wearing helmets, armor, and weapons.
The helmet found at the Chingul mound is believed to have belonged to a Polovtsian chieftain. The burial site was extremely rich, containing a treasure hoard that included items from Rus’, Byzantium, and the Middle East, attesting to the extensive trade routes of the time. The chieftain was buried with a range of items including a sumptuous gold-fabric kaftan of Byzantine silk, a thick chain made from an alloy of silver and gold, rings with gems, a straightened gold torc, and a range of weapons including a sabre, a sheathed bow, a quiver with arrows, a shield, and three knives. The helmet, shield casing, the rays on the quiver, and knife handles were all gilded.

Bit of geology.
This is High Cup Nick overlooking High Cup Gill, a beautiful valley located a few miles from the village of Dufton in Cumbria, England.
20,000 years ago this area was covered in thick ice. It was the ice and meltwater that sculpted this valley.
Today it is green and beautiful. 20,000 from now it will look very different. We live on an ever-changing planet; the ice will return, eventually, although when exactly is not known.
We can only imagine how this landscape looked 20,000 years ago and we can only imagine how it will look 20,000 years from now, but if humans are still thriving that far into the future, and presuming we keep on advancing the way we have been, people will be able to see photos that were taken thousands of years in the past. Imagine us today looking at a photo of the earth 20,000 years ago. That is a real possibility in the distant future, if we stay on the right track.
To truly appreciate this beautiful valley, there are more photos in comment section.

The Temple of Abu Simbel is truly awe-inspiring! It was built by Ramses II to showcase his power and dedication to the gods. The temple is famous for its colossal statues of Ramses II at the entrance, and the interior is adorned with intricate carvings and hieroglyphics. It"s amazing how they moved the entire temple to save it from flooding when the Aswan High Dam was built. Have you ever seen pictures of Abu Simbel? It"s a must-see if you ever get the chance to visit Egypt!

Alauna was part of the Western Sea Defences, which comprised several large forts with milefortlets and watchtowers in between. The Western Sea Defences were linked to the western end of Hadrian"s Wall and were thus an extension of the frontier defences.
Alauna was probably first built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (AD 117–138).
In 1779 a dedication stone was found on site. The inscription on it records the builders of the fort:
"VEXIL LEG II AVG
ET XX V V
FECERVNT"
"Detachments of the Second Legion Augusta and of the Twentieth Legion Valeria Victrix built (this)."
As you can see, there are no intact ruins above ground level, and only the earthworks are visible. But in its day, Alauna was an impressive fort with a vicus (civilian settlement) to the northeast. . .

Castel Sant"Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, stands as a majestic symbol of Rome"s rich history and architectural prowess. Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian in 123 AD as a mausoleum for himself and his family, the structure evolved over the centuries, serving various purposes from fortress to papal residence.
Rising beside the Tiber River, the cylindrical fortress boasts a distinctive appearance with its towering cylindrical form crowned by a statue of Archangel Michael. Its strategic location near the Vatican made it a crucial stronghold for centuries, witnessing numerous battles and sieges. The castle"s thick walls and battlements still bear scars from past conflicts, reflecting its storied past.
Throughout history, Castel Sant"Angelo underwent several transformations, from a mausoleum to a papal refuge and a prison. Its interior is a labyrinth of chambers, halls, and corridors, each echoing with tales of power, intrigue, and resilience. Visitors can explore its fascinating corridors, including the papal apartments adorned with exquisite Renaissance frescoes.
Today, Castel Sant"Angelo stands as a testament to Rome"s enduring legacy, attracting visitors from around the world to marvel at its architecture, history, and panoramic views of the Eternal City. Whether viewed from afar against the Roman skyline or explored up close, Castel Sant"Angelo remains a timeless symbol of Rome"s grandeur and resilience.
