In our final interview of the 2022 general election, our host Jane Hanson spoke with Congresswoman Grace Meng about her past legislative successes and plans for the future.
During her last few years in Congress, Congresswoman Grace Meng has focused on bringing back real results to her constituents in District 6. Congresswoman Meng is running for reelection to continue this work , striving to better the lives of her constituents.
In Washington, Congresswoman Meng’s work has resulted in laws and funding to keep our streets and neighborhoods safe, additional health care options for veterans and secured funding for local hospitals, colleges, and youth programs. Upon reelection, Congresswoman Meng intends to focus on safety by continuing work on different solutions to address New Yorkers with mental health needs as well as pushing for more gun safety legislation.

After stepping down from his seat in 2015 to help his family in a time of need, former Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny is ready to reprise his role as representative for District 46. Brook-Krasny intends to build and expand upon his previous nine years of public service on his return to Albany.
Originally elected as a democratic representative, Brook-Krasny has changed party lines and is now running as a representative of the republican party. Brook-Krasny’s plans for Albany include working across party lines to reverse the legalization of marijuana as well as increasing support and funding for the New York police force. With these two points of focus, Brook-Krasny hopes to make New Yorker a safer place for all.

Retired New York City Police Department Lieutenant, Vito LaBella is running for Senate in District 17 to help protect the families that he previously served as a member of the police force. LaBella started on his recent journey to public office by leading protests over the Brooklyn Bridge, heading rallies and testifying in front of legislators over issues of safety and now intends to head to Albany to enact further change.
When he retired, LaBella had no intention of coming out of retirement to start a career in politics, but he, amongst 100 other retired police officers, made the decision to step up and work to take back the city. In Albany, LaBella’s first step will be to repeal all pro-criminal laws enacted over the past few years. This includes more than just Bail Reform, he also intends to appeal Raise the Age and Discovery Reform.

Grace Lee’s political activism career began with an effort to keep children safe from a toxic cleanup site in the South Street Seaport. Since then, Lee has remained focused on protecting all New Yorkers, from young children to our future generations and hopes to continue this work representing Assembly District 65.
In Albany, Lee intends to keep her eyes focused on safety. This means safety in regards to the environment, ensuring that steps are taken to slow climate change as well as public safety. Lee is guided by the principal that every person in New York City deserves to feel safe. She supports the recent initiatives created by Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul to increase the police presence in subway stations, but knows there is more to be done. Lee plans to work with her fellow legislators in Albany to increase investments in local communities and social services as well as strengthen relationships with law enforcement offices to work towards a safer New York.

Iwen Chu is running for Senate in District 17 to bring proper representation to southern Brooklyn communities. For the past 10 years, Chu has worked among the community serving the families of southern Brooklyn in different roles and has made the decision to take the next step in her public service journey.
Throughout her work in public service, Chu has found that immigrant communities are underserved and underrepresented. If elected, she intends to be a stronger voice for these communities and ensure they are getting the support they deserve. This includes creating a language support system when she arrives in Albany.
