Kew Garden Hills Scoop
Kew Garden Hills is the central enclave of Orthodox Jewry in the borough of Queens. KGH has dozens of Orthodox synagogues in its 10 mile radius which stretches from the Horace Harding Expressway to Union Turnpike. The neighborhood boasts two famous rabbinical seminaries (Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim and Yeshivas Ohr HaChaim and its high school. There is also an elementary yeshiva which is a division of Yeshivas Ohr HaChaim. There is also elementary education at the Yeshiva of Central Queens. The Bukharian community (from Russian Central Asia- Sephardic) which is estimated at 70,000 residents is now the dominant force in Kew Garden Hills and it includes many Russian speaking members and there is an Ashkenazi community. Torah life is thriving in Kew Garden Hills and it is the home of CHAZAQ, a clearinghouse for almost all religious needs.
Kew Garden Hills is a quiet and mostly safe area. Kew Gardens Hills' rate of violent crimes per capita is lower than that of the city as a whole. The incarceration rate of 191 per 100,000 people is lower than that of the city as a whole. (Wiki). Kosher consumers have a nice variety of stores to shop in including pizza shops. grocery stores and ethnic Russian shops. Residents of other parts of Queens such as Forest Hills, Hillcrest, Fresh Meadows Rego Park and Bayside come to the Main shopping strip on Main Street to do their shopping in Kew Garden Hills. Religious necessities,books and gifts serve all of Queens.These stores include Gift World and Safra.
