Is the CH-46 Sea Knight still in service?

The CH-46 Sea Knight is a transport helicopter that was used by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army. The CH-46 was originally introduced in the 1960s and saw extensive service during the Vietnam War.

The CH-46 Sea Knight was gradually phased out of service in the 1990s and early 2000s. The U.S. Marine Corps retired its last CH-46 helicopters in 2004, while the U.S. Army retired its CH-46s in 1998.

Although the CH-46 is no longer in service with the U.S. military, it continues to be used by some civilian operators and air ambulance services. However, it is not as widely used as it once was.

Some reasons for its retirement include:

Age: The CH-46 was introduced over 50 years ago, and its design and technology were becoming outdated.
Maintenance costs: Maintaining the CH-46 became increasingly expensive due to its age and complexity.
Safety concerns: The CH-46 had a higher accident rate compared to newer helicopters.
Replacement by newer models: The CH-46 was replaced by newer helicopters like the UH-60 Black Hawk and the MV-22 Osprey, which offered improved performance, range, and safety features.
Today, while you may still see a few CH-46s in use with civilian operators or for nostalgia purposes, they are largely retired from military service and have been replaced by more modern and capable helicopters.

Air Force to get 19 new Aircrafts to fight insecurity
The Nigerian Airforce is expecting delivery of 19 additional aircrafts in the fight against insecurity in the North East.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, disposed this during the 2021 Budget defence before the Senate Committee on Air Force at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

He said the Airforce had carried out operations for over 60,000 hours with half of the time in the North East to fight insurgency.

“We are expecting 3 J-17 fighters from Pakistan, 12 Super Tucano from United States, one M-171 and 3 special mission aircrafts from NIMASA.

“We are talking of about 19 additional aircrafts.”
The CAS also said one hanger had been relocated to Maiduguri to support aircraft maintenance.

Sadique said the NAF had trained 119 pilots from Liberia Air Force in support of the West African military.

He added that about 200 personnel were receiving training in nine different countries.

“We are expecting that this pilots would soon join their colleagues in the fight against insecurity,” he said.
He added that the series of training had greatly improved the efficiency of the NAF in covert operation.
A member of the committee, Senator Sani Musa (Niger East), said the Federal Government must rededicate resources and deploy technology to effectively fight insurgency.

He complained that N1 billion proposed for training in the 2021 budget was meagre for serious training, research and development.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Bala Ibn N’Allah, said the panel would be willing to visit the North East for on-the-spot assessment of the region.

He commended the NAF for efforts to rid the North East of insurgency.

He said, “The committee is willing and ready for two on-the-spot visits to the theatre (of terrorism) maybe Maiduguri and elsewhere, so that we can register formally our appreciation to the efforts of the Air Force to the challenges of insecurity.

“By this we will be able to demonstrate that there are different ways to give our lives as far as protecting the territorial integrity of the country.

“There is no greater service one can render to one’s country than sacrificing one’s live to the peace and order, as well as protection of the territorial integrity of the country. We deeply appreciate the efforts of the Nigerian Air force.”

Singapore shops for new platforms as part of Air Force transformation
MELBOURNE, Australia — The Republic of Singapore Air Force celebrates its 50th anniversary this year as it continues its transformation into a modern fighting force, with the service due to take delivery of new platforms this year amid a number of ongoing procurement programs.

The Southeast Asian island nation — which measures roughly one-third the size of the U.S. state of Rhode Island in terms of land area and is strategically located at the southern end of the Straits of Malacca, through which a significant portion of the world’s maritime trade passes — is a security cooperation partner of the United States and operates one of the most advanced militaries in the region.

The Singaporean military is transforming itself into an integrated, networked fighting force, and the Air Force is no exception. The service recently completed taking delivery of 40 Boeing F-15SG Strike Eagle multirole fighters, which serve alongside other aircraft and helicopters such as Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 52/52+ Fighting Falcons and Boeing AH-64D Apache helicopter gunships.

The Air Force will also start taking delivery of the first of six Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transports, which will replace four ex-U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers acquired in the late 1990s along with five Lockheed Martin KC-130B/H Hercules tankers/transports, which have now gone back to serve as airlifters in Singapore’s Air Force alongside five C-130Hs.

The service is also expected to receive two Lockheed Martin S-70B Seahawk anti-submarine helicopters this year, bringing its fleet to eight.

It is also recapitalizing its transport helicopter fleet with the order of the Airbus Helicopters H225M Caracal medium-lift helicopter and the Boeing CH-47F Chinook to replace earlier versions of both helicopter types. Their delivery is expected to begin around the 2019-2020 time frame.

Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin is upgrading the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s fleet of 60 F-16s under a contract signed in 2014. They will be fitted with the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, which is an active electronically scanned array radar, and Link 16 data links. The F-16s will be expected to serve until the 2030s.

Due to a shortage of airspace for training, 12 of Singapore’s F-16s are based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona for training in a mixed squadron of personnel from the Singaporean and American air forces.

US Air Force asks for 72 fighters in 2024, and it might happen again
Correction: A previous version of this story overstated the U.S. Air Force’s fighter acquisition plans. Rather than guarantee, the service anticipates it will again request 72 fighters.

WASHINGTON — For the first time in recent history, the U.S. Air Force this year directly asked Congress for the full complement of 72 fighters it says it needs in its next budget request. And the general in charge of planning for the service’s future said Thursday this might not be the last time.

Top Air Force leaders have said for years that it needs to buy at least 72 new fighters each year to both modernize its fighter fleet and lower the age of the average plane. If it doesn’t bring on that many new fighters annually, generals warn, the service won’t have enough new aircraft to replace aging and retiring fighters, such as the F-15C.

But that goal has long been out of reach. For years, Congress has approved fighter procurements that are below the Air Force’s desired goal, sometimes significantly so, and the service hasn’t asked for everything its leaders say it needs.

The fiscal 2024 budget proposal released in March broke that trend by directly asking for money to buy 48 new F-35As and 24 F-15EX Eagle IIs.

Air Force investigating in-flight mechanical issue on Luke F-35

The Air Force is investigating what caused a mechanical problem aboard an F-35A fighter in flight earlier this month, a spokesperson confirmed to Air Force Times.

The pilot opted to return to Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, while they tried to figure out what was causing the issue, 56th Fighter Wing spokesperson Sean Clements said Wednesday.
The pilot radioed a code 7700, which flags an airborne emergency to air traffic control, around 1:10 p.m. local time on June 15, according to the flight tracking site FlightRadar24. The site showed the jet circling counterclockwise over northwest Phoenix as it prepared to land at Luke.

“When the malfunction didn’t remedy itself, the pilot returned the aircraft safely to the ground where the issue can be investigated more in-depth,” Clements said.

It’s unclear what the specific nature of the problem was, how it affected the aircraft or what caused it. The Pentagon’s F-35 Joint Program Office did not immediately respond to a request for more further details.
The jet has flown several times since then, according to FlightRadar24, including an appearance Thursday at Fort Worth, Texas, where F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin builds the airframe.

The 56th Fighter Wing trains more than 100 F-35 pilots each year and graduates three-quarters of the world’s Joint Strike Fighter pilots, according to its website. The Air Force currently owns more than 400 F-35As and plans to purchase over 1,700 in total.
