Foxconn may build factory in the US.
Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker, is considering setting up a display-panel producing plant in the United States.
According to its chief executive there would be an investment of more than $7 billion (6.5 billion euros), creating about 30,000-50,000 jobs.
Reportedly it could be a joint venture with Apple for which it makes the majority of the iPhones and iPads that are produced in the world.
Foxconn CEO and Chairman Terry Gou, speaking at a company event in Taiwan, said Foxconn has been considering such a move for years, adding: “There is such a plan, but it is not a promise. It is a wish.”
He said the proposal to build a display plant, which would be planned with its Sharp unit, depends on many factors – such as investment conditions – that would have to be negotiated at the US state and federal levels.

Apple shares fall as latest launch gets mixed reaction.
Disappointing products? Or are expectations simply too high?
Despite Apple’s launch of a new TV set-top box and other innovations, shares in the company fell 1.9 percent by Wednesday’s close.
A similar drop has been experienced before with other rollouts. One analyst said it’s getting harder and harder for Apple to compete against itself.
Novelties such as the optional pencil that comes with the new iPad Pro have prompted interest.
For some commentators, CEO Tim Cook’s optimism could pay off.

German investor confidence nosedives after VW emissions scandal .
The revelation that millions of Volkswagen diesel cars had been polluting the air far more than had been claimed has helped send German investor confidence plunging.
Weakness in emerging markets is also blamed for the fall.
The monthly survey by the ZEW Centre for European Economic Research showed economic sentiment slid to 1.9 in October from 12.1 last month – far below what was forecast and the seventh consecutive decline.
A separate index tracking current conditions also dropped more than expected.
VW’s admission that it fixed emissions tests in 11 million of its diesel-engine cars wiped tens of billions of the company’s market value.

World's largest mobile operator Vodafone hails European recovery in latest results.
The world’s largest mobile operator, Britain’s Vodafone, has reported a better-than-expected increase in revenue growth in the second quarter.
Its organic service revenue growth – based on its own resources – was 1.2 percent, up from 0.8 percent in the first quarter and well above the 0.9 percent that analysts were expecting.
Core earnings also rose more than expected, by 1.9 percent to 5.79 billion pounds (8.17 billion euros) in the six months to the end of September, as investment in Vodafone’s networks began to pay off.
“We have reached an important turning point for the group with a return to organic growth in service revenue and EBITDA (core earnings) in the first half of the financial year,” Chief Executive Vittorio Colao said on Tuesday.
The company says it has benefited from a steady improvement in Europe’s economy – particularly in southern countries – enabling it to offer 4G services to 80 per cent of its customers.

Revealed: Europe’s 100 most promising start-ups tipped to be the next unicorns by VivaTech.
Viva Technology has unveiled Europe’s "Top 100 Next Unicorns," its annual list of the most promising scale-ups with the potential to be worth $1 billion (€900 million) or more in the near future.
The organisers of France’s biggest tech conference have strong flair and influence in the sector, as more than 40 per cent of the companies, they have nominated since 2019 have since become unicorns.
The 2022 list, compiled in partnership with tech investment firm GP Bullhound, spans 12 European countries as well as the UK and Israel.
The three regions with the most potential unicorns are the UK, with 24 scale-ups shortlisted, followed by France and Germany with 17 scale-ups each.
So far, the companies have raised on average €112 million each, for a total of more than €10 billion.

Don't be a fossil fool’ says ethical bank in green investment campaign.
Nearly two thirds of Brits don’t want banks to fund fossil fuel companies, preferring to opt for green investment instead, a survey by ethical bank Triodos has found.
The self-proclaimed “leading ethical bank” in Europe is calling for customers to be more aware of where their money is going when they invest in a savings account. Founded in 1980 in the Netherlands, it has been in the UK for 25 years and aims to “democratise” the banking sphere. In response to the climate crisis, Triodos has launched a campaign called ‘Don’t be a fossil fool’ to raise awareness of the issue.
The results show six in ten of those surveyed acknowledge fossil fuels are damaging the planet, yet two thirds have no idea if their money is supporting fossil fuel production. UK customers could be unknowingly investing in the region of £16 billion in fossil fuels through their ISAs, says Triodos.
What’s more, “during a period of economic uncertainty, savers may well be rethinking how they invest and want to know whether they are banking with a brand that is giving back to the community,” states Rachel Springall, a Finance Expert at Moneyfacts.co.uk.
The ‘Don’t be a fossil fool’ campaign seeks to shine a light on the “chronic lack of transparency” in the sector, in regards to whether banks are investing in climate-damaging fuels, such as oil, gas or coal.

Actor Robert Downey Jr.’s new investment fund is tackling issues like deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and microplastics.
The Iron Man star announced his two new venture capital funds at the World Economic Forum’s virtual Davos meeting on Wednesday. They will be an extension of a broader environmental initiative he set up in 2019.

Bitcoin tumbles below $50,000 after reports Joe Biden will raise taxes on investmentsThe price of Bitcoin tumbled on Friday back below $50,000 (€41,400) as investors worried about the possibility of heavy taxes on financial transactions in the US.
It has been a tough week for the leading cryptocurrency whose value has slipped almost 25 per cent since its all-time high in mid-April at nearly $65,000 (€53,800).
By 12.15 pm CET on Friday, Bitcoin was down 4 per cent to $49,565 (€41,060).
Other cryptocurrencies were dragged down in its wake, with the total cryptocurrency market shedding $450 billion (€373 billion) from its value over the same period, according to Coinmarketcap, a website that lists more than 9,000 cryptocurrencies.

COP26: Climate finance has to overcome many hurdles to be effective, the UN's eco finance chief says.
Meeting the COP26 pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions will require a lot of money and support from the private sector.
The United Nations’ climate envoy Mark Carney said last week it would cost $100 trillion (€87 trillion euros) over the next three decades, adding that the finance industry should find ways to raise private money.
"The money is here - but that money needs net zero-aligned projects and (then) there's a way to turn this into a very, very powerful virtuous circle - and that's the challenge," the former Bank of England governor told attendees of the summit in Glasgow.

Germany's new government is pouring 60 billion euros into combatting climate change.
The German government has injected 60 billion euros into fighting the climate crisis.
The investment is part of a new supplementary budget to "supercharge" the country's climate and transformation fund and encourage a shift towards a green economy, say officials.
The budget, passed unanimously by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet, will channel billions of euros of unused debt in this year's federal budget into future green spending.
The manoeuvre was agreed last month by the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), pro-spending Greens and fiscally more cautious Free Democrats (FDP) in their coalition deal. It allows the parties to make the most of a temporary, pandemic-related suspension of borrowing limits.

Plus an additional 18 billion euros will go into the country's climate and transformation fund next year.
