*It's Cider Season!*
Published Date: September 13, 2024
Podcast Episode: 721
As the temperature drops with the leaves, so too do we fall further into harvest season. And with the harvest comes apples. And with apples… Well, you know where this is going.

It’s another juicy cidercast on BSR, with ambassadors from several cider states here to dish out what to expect this cider season.

**As we prep for CiderFeast Brooklyn , October 5th to kick off cider week in NYC***

In the studio today is Middletown, CT’s Ronald Sansone of Spoke + Spy Ciderworks and president of the Cider Institute of North America; Jonathan Oakes of Medina, New York, President of the New York Cider Association, and proprietor of Steampunk Cider; Ben Wenk of Three Springs Fruit Farm in Adams County, Pennsylvania, and current board president of the Pennsylvania Cider Guild; and finally Scott Ramsey of Beacon, NY, and executive director of the New York Cider Association.

Different state cider associations, competitions, and festivals have grown and changed quite a bit over the past 15 years. Tune in to catch up on the state of cider!

Thanks AMNY - Emily Davenport!
"Calling all hard cider fans! CiderFeast NYC is returning to Brooklyn this coming October 5th!

Presented by Food Karma Projects, CiderFeast NYC celebrates all things hard cider. Now in its tenth year, the festival will be the kick off to Cider Week in New York on Oct. 5 at Industry City.

"I was very active at Cider Week in 2014 and organized the first CiderFeast at the Seaport, then loved it so much I kept hosting each year,” said Jimmy Carbone, creator of CiderFeast NYC. “It’s easy to be converted to fine, dry cider when you’re drinking and eating with industry pioneers like Steve Wood of Farnum Hill Cider, Eleanor Leger of Eden Ciders, and Andy Brennan of Aaron Burr Cider. I can’t wait to share these ciders for the tenth year in a row!”

CiderFeast NYC puts a spotlight on over 20 ciders from New York State and the surrounding region. Guests will be able to try sample pours from New York’s Angry Orchard Cider House, Brooklyn Cider House, Graft Cider, Hudson North Cider, Hudson Valley Farmhouse Cider, Indian Ladder Farms Cidery & Brewery, Original Sin Cider, Quartz Rock Vineyard, Sauvage Beverages, and Treasury Cider, Vermont’s Eden Ciders and Vermont Cider Co., New Jersey’s The Ciderhouse at Ironbound Farm, Pennsylvania’s Bucktail Cider Co., European brands Aval Cider (France), Romilly Cidre (France), and Barrika Basque Cider (Spain), and more.

The fest will also include a food menu with cider donuts from Stone Ridge Orchard, Dakota Hams’ 24-month-aged Kentucky ham, selections from whole-animal butcher and salumeria Ends Meat, paella and Parés Baltà wine tasting by Chef Rafa de la Rosa, Cabot Creamery Grilled Cheese hot off the griddles, and hot sauces from BamuBamu Fire Club, Rocket Fuel Foods, and Coney Island Saucery.

Tickets and packages start at $45 (plus fee) per ticket, with VIP and Group options available. For more information, visit ciderfeasthq.com

We knew folk singer Heather Woods- many years of monthly back room song nights - led by Ken Schatz . What song should we sing for her passing?
AMEN 😃

The American Folklife Center is sad to note the passing of A. Heather Wood, a folksinger and folk music organizer who is featured in several AFC collections. Heather was always a friend of the AFC and of our staff members. Heather's website includes the statement "I am never ill," and her death occurred quite suddenly yesterday.

Heather was born in England in 1945, and began her singing career with the trio The Young Tradition, which also featured Peter Bellamy and Royston Wood. The Young Tradition was one of the first and most prominent revival groups to perform traditional English folksongs with a capella harmonies, taking traditonal groups like The Copper Family as their model but employing innovative influences from both medieval and modern music. They performed at major folk festivals in the UK and the US, and recorded influential albums that are still treasured listening for many today.

After the Young Tradition stopped performing in 1969, Heather was part of several duos, including with Royston Wood (as "No Relation" since their shared surname was a coincidence) and with former AFC staff member Andy Wallace (as "Crossover"). She was also part of the group "Poor Old Horse."

Heather moved to the U.S. in the 1970s and settled in New York, where she was important to the folk scene as a singer, but also as an organizer and catalyst. She worked with such organizations as the New York Folk Music Society, the Long Island Traditional Music Association, the Youth Traditional Song Weekend, and the TradMad Camp, held at Pinewoods Camp in Plymouth, Massachusetts. (Heather's other interests included science fiction and the search for extraterrestrial life.) As both a singer and an organizer, she attended such festivals as the Old Songs Festival, the Mystic Sea Music Festival, and Folk Alliance International, where she often met and encouraged AFC staff members.

Heather is an important part of several AFC collections. AFC folklorist Nancy Groce interviewed her for the Nancy Groce collection of interviews with culture brokers, and concerts by the Young Tradition are documented in the Izzy Young Collection and the Folklore Society of Greater Washington collection.

Heather had no close relatives and considered the friends she made through folk music to be family. We will miss her wit and wisdom (and of course her songs) at future folk music family gatherings.

Heather sent this picture by an unknown photographer to AFC staff member Stephen Winick a few years ago to be used as a promotional photo.

Episode 709 Aired: Wednesday, May 15th 2024

*Diane Flynt on the Surprising Story of Apples in the South*

We’re shaking things up with a cider episode this week! Jimmy is back at Roberta’s with a special guest who he has known since the early days of Cider Week NYC and Jimmys No. 43.

Diane Flynt, author of Wild, Tamed, Lost, Revived: The Surprising Story of Apples in the South, joins Jimmy to talk all about her apples and making great cider. The two will recount the trajectory of craft cider over the years, and Diane will introduce us to the story of apples in the south with a special reading from her book.

Also in the studio today is Kerrie Orrell Ellison to share some stories about picking apples with Diane, and how Diane has taught her to love apples rather than just enjoy them…

Pour up your favorite craft cider and tune in!

Cider Sessions: John Bunker.
Tune in for a very special conversation with apple expert John Bunker.

John grew up in Massachusetts and California, but on his first visit to Maine at age 11, he knew that Maine is where he would make his home. He moved to Super Chilly Farm with a bunch of friends on the day he graduated from Colby College and has never left. Over the years he has tried his hand at many different ventures- teaching high school English, managing the Belfast Co-op Store, selling salads and cider at the Common Ground Fair, teaching shop at Pine Island Camp, building houses and purchasing for the Federation of Maine Co-ops. Yet none of these things grabbed his attention like the the old apple trees growing in the fields around Palermo. As he picked the fruits from these neglected trees each fall, he began to notices the differences in the apples – to his surprise they were not all Macs. Through seasons of observation and hours of discussions with the old timers around town, he learned to identify the different varieties and appreciate their stories. His interest grew into a passion that became his life’s work.

John’s most recent project is creating the Maine Heritage Orchard at MOFGA. This orchard which is located in a renovated gravel pit adjacent to the MOFGA fairgrounds will be home to 500 or more historic pears and apples. When he is not thinking about apples, he….ok, he is always thinking about apples."
