Among the variations of jazz music, one of the most recognizable, but often overlooked is that of bossa nova. A product of the fusion of Afro-American jazz with Afro-Brazilian samba, the unique syncopation of bossa has been played by almost all major jazz musicians. Oscar Brown was an American singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist. Known for putting lyrics to Nat Adderley's "Work Song" and Miles Davis' "All Blues", he also occasionally incorporated Latin elements into his set, going as far as releasing a collaborative album with Brazilian guitarist Luiz Henrique. We'll be playing some Oscar on this Friday's episode of Jazz Tropical, along with more Latin jazz, soul, and bossa classics. Tune in to New Orleans Public Radio!
