Performing in Ohio is like going home for All Ohio Balloon Fest headliner Jefferson Starship's Dave Freiberg. Read more about the band's many iterations and the upcoming show below:

Jefferson Starship’s Dave Freiberg said Ohio holds a special place in his heart.
“I grew up outside Cincinnati and played at Ohio State in the band,” he said. “Coming there is like coming home.”
Freiberg will be bringing his legendary rock band Jefferson Starship to the All Ohio Balloon Festival next month where the audience will be able to hear hits such as “White Rabbit” and “We Built This City” from the band’s many iterations.
While it has taken many forms and name changes over the years, Freiberg said that’s all part of the evolution of playing in a group.
He was born in Massachusetts and raised in the midwest, but fans will associate his fame and success first with Jefferson Airplane, the band that formed in 1972 with founding members Paul Kantner and Grace Slick.
That wasn’t Freiberg’s first venture in the music world, however. He said his career has taken many paths since the early days of playing in west coast coffee shops in the 1960s.
“Everything in life is living in the right place at the right time,” Freiberg said. “I remember being on a trip to California and saw the clouds and the landscape and just needed to go there.”
Freiberg landed in the Bay Area of San Francisco in the early 1960s in the era of the folk music revival. While the east coast saw artists such as The Weavers and Bob Dylan move through the Greenwich Village folk scene in New York City, Freiberg saw west coast groups like The Kingston Trio.
“In those days, I was trying to make a living being a folk singer,” he said. “That was the scene at that time.”
He played in coffee shops and other venues across the Bay Area, as a singer-songwriter. That’s where he met people like Kantner and David Crosby, who went onto form The Byrds and Crosby Stills and Nash. He said the musicians were all trying to make their mark but one factor was about to change things for all of them.
“I tried being a folk singer but then came The Beatles,” Freiberg said.
With the band’s arrival in New York City in early 1964 and the subsequent release of their record and film of the same name, A Hard Day’s Night later that year, Freiberg said he switched gears to rock music.
A year later, he helped form Quicksilver Messenger Service with friends from the folk scene. That band had some success, Freiberg said, as he contributed to several of the band’s records between 1965 and 1971 on bass and vocals. But his involvement with the group stopped when he had to serve jail-time in 1971 for possession of ma*****na. While that may sound like a setback, it was that following year, Kantner asked Freiberg to fill in on vocals for his new band, Jefferson Airplane.
“I was out and looking to start a new band too and that’s when I talked with (Kantner) about Airplane,” Freiberg said.
The band made successful records over the next two years but then Kantner and Slick left the band in 1974. That’s when the first of the changes came. The band was renamed to Jefferson Starship and began to change its sound to a more commercial rock style into the 1980s. Then, the band became just Starship but Freiberg exited for a while before returning in 2005 when it was renamed Jefferson Starship and he’s been with them ever since.
“I’ve always felt like the door was always open, really like it was a revolving door that we could come in and out of,” he said. “And this band now is really the band that has been there since 2005.”
Kantner passed away in 2016 and as of this year, Freiberg is the only original member in the band from the early days. He said the current musicians are great including singer Cathy Richardson who now helps brings Slick’s sound back to the band.
“I can’t say enough about the band members. They’re all great and we have a great singer,” he said. “(Richardson) sounds so much like Grace.”
So what will the audience at the Balloon Fest hear? Freiberg said all the things they want to hear.
“There will definitely be old stuff. There’s so much old stuff, there are just so many songs,” he said. “We’ll play stuff from Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship and Starship. Most people will hear what they want to hear and I think it’ll be a great time.”
The All Ohio Balloon Fest runs Aug. 8-10 with Jefferson Starship headlining Friday, Aug. 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at allohioballoonfest.com
