An editor I've known for a long time just emailed me her Wish List - books she wants to acquire when she moves into her new, higher position at a different major US publishing house; another editor told me his Wish List on Monday, just in the course of a conversation.

I found out 10 minutes ago that one of my most ambitious, dedicated, world-changing clients has just died. Dr. Wallace J. Nichols was a legend in the world of people working to respect and save our oceans. I am in tears, just shocked to my very core. I have known "J" since we first began work on his book about 11 years ago.

He was exceptionally dedicated to his family, to our planet, and...to sea turtles. Every time I saw a sea turtle in the wild, I thought of the amazing stories he had told me about them.

My love and heart go out to him and his remarkable family. They've been through so much already.

Dear Fellow Americans: We are not a very courteous society. We are, in fact, kind of harsh with one another. I believe brevity is courtesy, and clarity is kindness. But just now, I got this email from a Turkish colleague whom I've met a few times at publishing conferences in Istanbul, and I'm feeling self-conscious for my country. Just look at how beautiful and warm this is:

The message you submitted has warmed up inside and healing like a soup. Thank you so much. I'm so glad you are all good. I hope to see you at the shortest convenience of Istanbul both in the world and in the beautiful book fairs. I am concerned for your interest and friend. I embrace you with friendship.
