Film crews are tight. You spend a lot of time together. If it’s hot, you’re all hot. If it’s wet, you’re all wet. Cold, dirty, it doesn’t matter you’re in the boat together. You eat meals together, work long hours together, you learn to depend and lookout for each other. So, when someone gets hurt or worse on set, it’s very personal because it’s like a member of the family. The heartbreak effects other crews, or member of the industry because we all know what it’s like to be there, we know the bonds and friendship made on set. We are a tribe. All part of a larger tribe.

It looks like several factors contributed to this accident. Production difficulties, cost and time issues and in order to mitigate those concerns and maximize the time on set, shortcuts were taken and mistakes were made. When an actor is handed a cold weapon, he and the rest of the crew are trusting that someone has taken measures to ensure the weapon is safe to be handled. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking on many levels.

At least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to production managers about gun safety on the set.
