Our History

The Democrat Missourian was established as the Cass County Democrat by C.W. Steele in 1881 and is one of the oldest continuously operated businesses in the county. Sexton bought The Democrat in 1954 and consolidated it with The Missourian which he had founded in 1931, forming The Cass County Democrat Missourian. The newspaper operated from the southeast corner of the square for 56 yea

rs. Brown, who purchased The Democrat in 1955 and did much to modernize and enlarge the operation. In 1958, he purchased the Cass County Shopper from William M. Bailey and combined the operations. In 1985, Brown sold the newspapers to Inland Industries of Lenexa, Kan., and in 1999 the newspapers were purchased by Knight-Ridder. McClatchy acquired most of the newspapers formerly owned by Knight-Ridder in 2006, which makes it the second largest newspaper company in the United States.
