This is a considerable premium over steam coals, which are used for power generation and selling for about $65/ton. Some of the best coking coals can be found in West Virginia, Virginia and Alabama. Glencore Receives Regulatory Approval to Acquire Elk Valley Resources
Glencore said on July 4 that it received approval from the Government of Canada under the Investment Canada Act (ICA) for the acquisition of a 77% interest in Elk Valley Resources (EVR) from Teck Resources. This was the final regulatory approval for the transaction, which is now expected to close on July 11, 2024.

Anglo Fights Fire at Grosvenor Mine in Australia
Anglo American suspended production at its Grosvenor coking coal mine in Queensland, Australia, following a methane ignition on June 29, 2024. Local media reports showed smoke billowing from the shaft of the longwall mine and the fire continues to burn. The site, which employs 1,400, is expected to be closed for months.

Coal Shipments Resume from CONSOL Energy’s Marine Terminal in Baltimore
CONSOL Energy said coal shipments to international markets began leaving its Marine Terminal in Baltimore last night (May 21, 2024). The terminal was shut down due to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge on March 26. The first empty ship arrived at the CONSOL Marine Terminal early Sunday morning, May 19, 2024, was loaded throughout that day and awaited clearance from officials for its 7:00 p.m. departure time Monday night.

MSHA Issues Final Silica Rule
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued a final rule that limits exposure to respirable silica dust. It lowers the permissible exposure limit of respirable crystalline silica to 50 micrograms per cubic meter (mg/m3) of air for a full-shift exposure, calculated as an 8-hour time-weighted average. If a miner’s exposure exceeds the limit, the final rule requires mine operators to take immediate corrective actions to come into compliance.

Hallador Restructures Sunrise Coal
Hallador Energy announced a restructuring of the company’s Sunrise Coal Division in Indiana. “As we transition Hallador from a coal production company to a vertically integrated independent power producer, we will idle production at our higher cost Freelandville and Prosperity mines, reduce our capital reinvestment for coal production in 2024 by approximately $10 million, and focus our seven units of underground equipment on four units of our lowest cost production,” said Brent Bilsland, CEO, Hallador Energy. “We will further improve the cost structure of these units by increasing their run time from five and a half days per week to seven days per week. We expect our coal production to generate 4.5 million tons annually.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas (HCMA) dedicated its new sustainable, state-of-the-art headquarters facility in Newnan, Ga., USA yesterday. The Newnan campus spans 19 acres and was converted from a wheel loader assembly and manufacturing facility that was built in 1987.

CONSOL Shifts More Coal to Export Markets
CONSOL Energy sold 26 million tons in 2023 and reported $858 million related to operating activities. During Q4 2023, the Pennsylvania Mining Complex (PAMC) produced 6.6 million tons and shipped 6.8 million tons. The Itmann complex sold 159,000 tons and improved its contracted position to 571,000 tons for 2024. PAMC improved its contracted position to 22 million tons in 2024 and 13 million tons in 2025.

Australia’s North Goonyella Renamed Centurion
Peabody announced that its North Goonyella mine in Queensland, Australia, will now be known as the Centurion mine. Under a cooperative agreement between Komatsu, Becker-Warkop and Hydrotech, 385 new longwall powered roof supports have been delivered to a U.S. longwall coal producer in Alabama. The first face began operation in July and the second face is undergoing installation. American Resources to Sell Coal Assets
American Resources said it has entered into a letter of intent to sell its coal mining assets to an unnamed group for a total consideration of approximately $280 million. The consideration takes the form of an upfront cash payment at closing, a share of profits generated from operations, an ongoing royalty payment based on coal sales and a minority equity interest upside. The assets are the McCoy Elkhorn Coal, Perry County Resources and Wyoming County Coal operating subsidiaries and the transaction includes debt and the reclamation bonds associated with those assets.

EPA and Army Amend WOTUS Rule
