Though some may not know it, Downtown Jax is peppered with all sorts of interesting public art, murals, sculptures and historical markers. Finding them is challenge in Jacksonville Magazine's new the Great Jacksonville Scavenger Hunt, a game that takes players into the heart of the city to search for 24 easy-to-see but often overlooked points of interest.

Each Scavenger Hunt kit includes materials for two teams of players. Competitors must search a 12-square-block area of Downtown. Using a cell phone or camera, each team captures images of the 24 Hunt Targets, the identity of which is revealed through a series of clues.

For example, one clue reads, “Ask not what this man can do for you, ask can you find him?” Here’s another: “Book lover? One of Charles Dickens’ best, since 1861.” Think you can locate those two objects? Fun for family outings, birthday parties, team building exercises and more! When ordered, we’ll send it to you ready to play. So, let’s get hunting!

Nights of Lights in St. Augustine runs through the end of January (the 28th, in fact). Jax Mag went to check out the spectacle this weekend. We left with three words: SO.... MANY.... PEOPLE. If you go, especially on the weekend, be prepared for heavy traffic rolling into the historic district. As for parking... good luck. We didn't get within three blocks of the public garage near the Old City Gates.

But, having found a space to park near the Lightner Museum, we enjoyed a delish meal at Casa Reina (after a 90-minute wait at the bar, which wasn't all bad :) and had fun walking along the bayfront. Happy 2024!

It was 50 years ago that Lynyrd Skynyrd released its groundbreaking debut album, a record that would push the Southern rock sound to stereo speakers around the world. To help commemorate the occasion and pay tribute to the band's roots, a new brand of American Whiskey debuted earlier this year. Hell House Whiskey, named after the Northeast Florida cabin where the band's three original founding members—Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins—dedicated themselves day and night to create legendary songs such as "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama." Rock on and cheers to 2024!

Christmas road trip! When finished in 1886, the Stetson Mansion in Deland was one of the grandest homes ever constructed in Florida. The Gilded Age winter estate of famed hat maker John B. Stetson embraced the times and its owner spared no expense creating the 19th Century masterpiece. The home features 10,000 panes of original leaded glass windows. Count them, if you wish.

The house is still privately owned, but it does open its doors to visitors for holiday home tours continuing through January 20. Tickets range from $15 to $38 for guided and self-guided tours.

His face is crumbling. Beneath the magnolias, the poet's visage looks mottled, venous and slightly blue. Standing beneath his 15-foot column, one can barely discern his lips, his nostrils, the sockets for his eyes. He looked proud once, proclaiming his love "like a red, red rose," this author of "Auld Lang Syne."

Who is he? And where is this weathered monument erected in his honor? Find out in the current issue of Jax Mag.

St. Augustine's Nights of Lights celebration is well known around Northeast Florida. Lesser known, but equally merry and bright, is Lighthouse Illuminations at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Visitors can explore the Keepers’ house and grounds illuminated by lights and garlands. You can also climb the tower to see the lights of downtown St. Augustine.

For their safety, kids must be 44 inches tall to climb the tower and must climb under their own power. Carrying children in the tower is prohibited—and it's a long, long way up to the top.

Advance tickets are necessary and only a limited number of spots are open each night.

One never knows what's going to be found while digging in St. Augustine.

Earlier this fall and during construction on a site near the Bridge of Lions, FDOT crews unearthed a nearly intact shipwreck. FDOT Archeologists and experts from SEARCH, a firm specializing in maritime archeology, believe the vessel dates to the mid- or late-1800s. Preserved in mud and soil, the wood of the hull has been thoroughly impregnated with water and has the consistency of water-soaked cardboard. After measuring and documenting the find, the vessel was removed for study and preservation.

Leave it to the Beaver.

Breakfast starts at 4 AM sharp. Lunch items are available from 10:30 AM till midnight. Bakery items, fudge and jerky may be purchased 24 hours a day. So goes the daily food service routine at Buc-ee's, the super-sized gas station chain that spreading across the Southeast, including one in Northeast Florida. Of course, calling Buc-ee's a gas station is akin to calling the Sistine Chapel a church. After all, the largest Buc-ee's covers nearly 75,000 square feet. Buc-ee Chips, anyone?

1970 was a year of strange but wonderful happenings at Jacksonville University. The men's basketball team nearly won the national championship and the school's yearbook, the Riparian, made national headlines for its funky graphic design and progressive content. In fact, that year's book is something of a collector's item as many students burned their copies after receiving it. Read the full story at our website.

Meet a rescue dog named Feather. She was a racing greyhound. But, as far as racing greyhounds go, Feather wasn’t particularly fast. So, she was pulled from the racing program and given to a shelter. Too often, this is where the story ends. However, this story was only just beginning.

Feather was rescued by Star City Greyhounds in Roanoke, Virginia. Here, it was learned that while Feather wasn’t much of a runner, she could jump like no other dog. In fact, after she was rescued—given a proper home, love and training—Feather began to jump. And jump. And jump. She leaped all the way into the Guinness Book of World Records, setting the mark for the highest jump ever by a dog. Her official world record is 75 inches (her top unofficial leap is 79).

While she no longer jumps like she used to, Feather is no couch potato. Though, she does enjoy a nice nap on the couch every now and again. What she really loves is performing, charming the crowds who come to see her and her canine companions on stage as part of the upcoming Mutts Gone Nuts UNLEASHED show. The one-day-only event is set for January 20, 2024, at the Florida Theatre.

See Feather and the rest of the Mutts Gone Nuts team in Jax for a truly jaw-dropping performance. Some guests will even be invited to take selfies on stage with a world class trainer who appeared on America’s Got Talent and meet Feather in person. Tickets now available at the Florida Theater box office.
