After 23 years, I too got drawn in this year. In the 2.5 days, I hunted 3 different sections (C, I, & G) in pursuit of my bull. Finally, at 8:20am on day 3, I took my 6x6 bull at 70 yds. He dressed out at 385 #. I was lucky that the ODWC guys could drive a sidexside right up to it and drive it out.
Many thanks to my group leader Tommy that kept moving me around for a successful hunt and Kelvin that gave me the tip on where to look on day 3.

Where to hunt elk in Montana?
A question that often stirs up a lively debate on social media, and I've been asked personally countless times, is where to hunt elk in Montana. My go-to response has always been "Up on Nowhere Creek." I hope there isn't actually a creek with that name because I've directed a few eager hunters there in my 50+ years of hunting in my home state of Montana.
I understand why people ask; honestly, I get it. There's a sense of camaraderie in our hunting community that's hard to find elsewhere. As much as I want to know, I don't ask the question when I see someone with a huge bull or monster buck in the back of their pickup. I respect the hard work that went into being successful. It's important to remember that hunting is not just about the kill, but also about the experience and the effort put into it. Respecting other hunters' privacy and hard work is a fundamental part of our shared passion.
Years ago, in the early 1980s, my father and I were fortunate enough to hunt Custer NF in southeastern Montana before so much change. Even most of the private ranches were kind enough to give us access. But we all know that those ranches are now leased out.
Things have changed dramatically, and now, with the bright idea of introducing wolves, these killers are decimating many of our local honey holes, sending us in search of new places to hunt in hopes of filling our tags.
It used to be different; you can't expect someone to point you to an area they worked so hard to find. It's important to respect others' hunting spots, just as you would want them to respect yours. This consideration is what keeps our hunting community strong and united.
So, the next time someone replies unfavorable to your question, try to remember why someone tells you. "Up on Nowhere Creek." But don't let that discourage you. Use it as a motivation to explore, learn, and find your own 'Nowhere Creek '. The thrill of the hunt, the anticipation of the unknown, that's what makes hunting so exciting. Happy hunting!

38 years of putting in for the WMWR bull elk hunt I finally hit it. Thanks to WMWR staff for there hard work and a big thanks to my son and my buddy and Jeff Steele and his packing team for helping me pack him out over a mile and a quarter in this tough terrain.

Incredible hunt! Thanks to the helpful and professional staff at the refuge! Shot this beauty and it took 3 hours to quarter and pack out. She ran down the mountain, and I had to climb up and down over 1000 feet of elevation 4 times! My helper couldn't make it, so I definitely got my workout for the day. It was exhausting but rewarding. Once in a lifetime hunt for sure.
