CLUBHOUSE GHANA
*INTRODUCTION*
Clubhouse Ghana, a non-profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has a mission to rehabilitate people living with Mental Health conditions in Ghana through advocacy, skills training, as well as the goal of helping them to access Free Basic Education and subsidized Health Care.
It is the First-Ever Clubhouse-Franchised Rehabilitation Center to be established in the entire West Africa. It focuses on re-integrating Mentally Challenged individuals back into society through *Education*, Transitional *Employment* and *Housing* Assistance: The *E E H Model* of the non-profit organization.
As a member of an internationally recognised organization of Clubhouse International, Clubhouse Ghana has adopted as part of its operations the 37 operational standards for its member institutions. 340 globally-located Clubhouses like Clubhouse Ghana of Africa; all operate under the auspices of Clubhouse International in Manhattan, New York (https://www.clubhouse-intl.org).
This article seeks to take readers through the modus operandi of Clubhouse Ghana. They are as follows.
*MEMBERSHIP*
At Clubhouse Ghana, we receive recovering patients, aka "Members" based on the recommendations of our Psychiatrists. There is no age limit. Our center is open to *anyone* with a history of mental illness.
In all Clubhouses, we refer to patients as *“Members“* in order to eradicate the stigma that is attached to mental illness. All Members have equal access to every Clubhouse opportunity with no differentiation based on diagnosis or level of functionality. That is why at Clubhouse Ghana, the CEO has purchased a smartphone and other items for all members not to feel left out in all areas of life.
Currently, we can boast of staff strength of 13 individuals that handle an 'in-patient' capacity of 22 Members that reside on-site; plus several other individuals in an 'out-patient' day-to-day attendance program for therapy and ongoing community recreation.
*RELATIONSHIP*
The rapport between members and staff is a cordial one. In order to bond well with Members and for them to have a feeling of belonging, staff are not encouraged to do activities that are outside the center’s curriculum or "work ordered" day *familiarity schedules* for the Members. Responsibility for the operation of the Clubhouse lies with the Members and staff, and undoubtedly with the Clubhouse Administrator, as well.
Central to this responsibility is the engagement of Members and staff in all aspects of Clubhouse operations.
The Administrator ensures the day-to-day running of the center; in addition to the sustained livelihood and well-being of Members through a cordial collaboration with other staff.
*RUNNING OF DAILY ACTIVITIES*
The daily activities involve Members and staff together, side-by-side, in the running of the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse focuses on strengths, talents, and abilities; therefore, the day’s activity must not include medication, clinics, or day treatment within the Clubhouses. All treatment of Members are referred to nearby hospitals to handle. At Clubhouse Ghana, for instance, today, you will see Lucy, one of our Members, assisting the administrator, and on another day, you will see her interacting with different staff. She does that on her own volition with happiness and contentment.
Our Members choose the manner in which they utilize the Clubhouse and the staff with whom they work. There are no agreements, contracts, schedules, or stringent rules intended to enforce participation of Members (only guidelines of concern and effectiveness). We also want to state on record that Clubhouse Ghana is not a Psychiatric Hospital but a "Home away from Home" where Members feel a sense of belonging within a community setting.
*EMPLOYMENT, SKILLS TRANING, AND EDUCATION*
Clubhouse Ghana seeks additionally to facilitate the rehabilitation process of mentally challenged individuals that are unkempt and neglected without shelter, by taking them off the streets in order to ensure reintegration and restoration of their rights and human dignity through the provision of the following services:
For those that are functional, the center seeks to ensure their free Basic Senior High School (SHS) education through the involvement of the *Ministry of Education*. By virtue of the Rehabilitation Center’s objectives, the functional "Members” (no longer referred to as recovering “patients”); will also learn a skill or a trade as quickly as possible and find work and shelter with assistance from their assigned Social Workers within assigned apprenticeships.
The Rehabilitation Center seeks to take care of those who are assessed to be non-functional or completely dysfunctional by the Head Psychiatrists until they expire one day.
Medical services will be rolled into a specific Healthcare insurance plan. Duly, from the provisions of international funding and donor contributions, no challenged client will ever be turned away or rejected through the involvement of the *Ministry of Health* and *Mental Health Authority*.
Clubhouse Ghana seeks to serve as a Recreational Center for Members, as well. The center will facilitate sporting and entertainment activities amongst the Members, while individual talents and activities, such as music and other skill sets, will be harnessed as a means for the individuals to earn a living.
Upon request, counseling and psychotherapy services will also be provided to Members. This will be done with the assistance of Social Workers in Ghana, as well as *The Ghana Psychological Counsel* in Accra.
*PARTNERSHIP*
We are into partnership with Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Pantang Hospital, Ankaful Hospital, United Way, National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Health America (Houston branch), The Ministry of Health, Rotary Club of Houston (RCOH) and a few other Clubs globally; as well as the Ministry of Information, Education and the Mental Health Authority of Ghana (MHA) in its entirety. We are working hand in hand to propel the ML4Lyfe Group’s non-profit NGO-arm, to succeed at all costs for the benefit of Ghana and Africa as a whole.
*FUNDING*
In the meantime, "in-kind" contributions and limited funds are trickling in from kind donors in the hopes of securing future and continual sponsorship for Member upkeep and staff salaries, etc. The project itself, the facility, and the entire operations of the NGO are currently self-funded by the CEO, ML Brookshire (Eghan) née Blay-Miezah, since the inception of Clubhouse Ghana in Accra.
*CONCLUSION*
The CHG project is one of great magnitude and epic proportions in the long-term. We are appealing to all and sundry to "put their shoulders in" by contributing to Clubhouse Ghana to make the project stand the test of time.
*No amount is too small.*
