Girls Inc. of Tarrant County had a "College Shower" last night at Women's Club of Fort Worth.

Similar to a wedding or baby shower, they unveiled a room full of gifts donated by generous community sponsors. These gifts, ranging from laptops and microwaves to essential school supplies, equip the girls with everything they need to thrive in college.

This year, 37 graduating GITC participants were recognized for their dedication. They have consistently participated in GITC’s school programs, summer camps, college prep workshops, STEM initiatives, and maintained a perfect attendance record at college-focused activities.

Here are some photos + videos from the event. Congrats to all the wonderful young women involved, as well as the organizers.

Earlier this morning, we shared an article about the Solar Car Challenge, which took place up at Texas Motor Speedway from Sunday to Wednesday of this week. Harmony School of Innovation Fort Worth came in sixth in the Classic category (Fort Worth Country Day's team also placed in third).

The Harmony school's car was called "The Bannister" and its team name was "The Stripes." One of their teachers, Madelayne, sent over a few videos of the students working on + testing the car.

The Solar Car Challenge took place from Sunday to Wednesday at Texas Motor Speedway. In the "Classic" division (one of four divisions), a team from Pocatello, Idaho won — but teams from Fort Worth Country Day (3rd) and Harmony School of Innovation Fort Worth (6th) performed well.

We got to visit the event during testing, and it's a fun time — all the cars are differently-designed and shaped, which makes it interesting too.

On Saturday, Sept. 14 at DFW Marriott & Golf Club, they're having an all-day event about how to build a team and get started for the 2025 season — so if any teachers or STEM educators, principals, etc. are reading this, consider that as an option too.

First established in 1993 to help motivate students in science and engineering + to increase alternative energy awareness, the Challenge is hosted by Oncor and Lockheed Martin.

Cue Toto’s “Africa.” The annual wave of Saharan Dust has blown over 7,000 miles on tropical gusts to Fort Worth, turning the clear Texas skies to a murky haze that looks like smoke.

The Saharan Dusty has blown into the metroplex, turning the North Texas sky smoky.

The organization is opening a new 14-acre campus later this year to increase its capacity to provide vital services for families in need.

Center for Transforming Lives' impact on Tarrant County is about to get even bigger.

The 31st annual Solar Car Challenge begins today at Texas Motor Speedway. (The opening ceremony is at 8:30 a.m.)

The winner is determined by whichever car drives the most miles accumulated over the four-day period, while facing challenges like car breakdowns and weather conditions. Of the 32 teams across 12 states competing this year, 16 are from Texas.

Two are immediately from Fort Worth, including Harmony School of Innovation Fort Worth.

The race is free for the public to attend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during each of the four days.

Some news you might have missed this week:

* The Fort Worth Public Library now offers free passes to Log Cabin Village, good up to one week for a party of four people. Pro tip: The library system also offers free general admission to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden if you have a library card.

* Hotel Drover was voted the best hotel in DFW in Travel and Leisure’s 2024 World’s Best Awards. The hotel, which is 200 rooms right in the heart of the Stockyards, has been praised since its opening — and, in fact, it won the same distinction from Travel and Leisure two years ago.

* A new speakeasy-inspired bar is set to open this month above Red Goose Saloon downtown. Known as FW Thurderbird, the bar from local proprietors Brian Forella and Danny Weaver is taking the former spot of the Fort Worth Live club.

* Demolition has been delayed for 180 days on the historic Kimbell Milling Co. Building. Owner Cenikor Foundation Inc. hopes to demolish the 1929 structure at 2109 S. Main St. that once housed the office of Kay Kimbell, the local philanthropist who helped found the Kimbell Art Museum.

* A new 94-unit housing complex called Clifton Riverside is set to open northeast of downtown later this year with mix of affordable and market-rate apartments. Located on a former nightclub site, the project comes from eight different funders and organizations, including Fort Worth Housing Solutions.

* Latin-inspired street food spot Boca 31 is closing on Friday, July 19. Named after the Spanish word for “mouth,” the restaurant had been at the intersection of Rosedale Street and 8th Avenue. Stop by for one more delectable Cuban sandwich.

603 days ago, on Nov. 17, 2022, DFW was awarded the MLB All-Star Game for 2024. Well, that weekend has now arrived. There's a lot of things going on between now and Tuesday, including the MLB Draft at Cowtown Coliseum on Sunday night (6 p.m.) + the Budweiser Clydesdales trotting down East Exchange Avenue from right about now until 1:30 p.m. — and they're available for photos after that. There's a lot of Fort Worth action in the Fort Worth Stockyards Station, mostly along Exchange, but there are also themes and specials at different bars and restaurants from here to Arlington.

This link will give you a solid baseline.

If you're into baseball trivia, here's one: three Texas Rangers have been named the MVP of an All-Star Game. Can you name any of the three? Hint: 1990 is the first year a Ranger won, and 2006 is the last time it happened.

Guess below 👇

The MLB All-Star game itself isn't until Tuesday, July 16, but Fort Worth + Arlington will be abuzz with events all weekend.

Pickleball Kingdom is a fast-growing pickleball franchise out of Arizona. One of their niches is outdoor-style courts indoors. (Nice.) Well, they're starting to ramp up in North Texas. In late 2024, they'll have a location in Dallas Galleria. They come to Fort Worth in (as of now) January 2025 on Kroger Drive, near Keller. The Fort Worth location will have 17 courts and about 48,000-sqft. And then, a Haltom location is in the works too, near the 50-acre H-Mart currently being built. (Exact timeline on Haltom isn't known.)

cc: USA Pickleball

The rapidly growing pickleball company will be near Keller and likely open in early 2025.

We're breaking this "evolution of downtown" series into four parts; basically divided downtown into four quadrants to make it easier to read. This part covers the southwest side of downtown, where a Dogtopia is going in at 1109 Lamar Street — former home of Nathan Frankel Electric Supply — and City Hall is moving to Pier One, so Fort Worth Police Department Central Division + Fort Worth Public Library are coming into the current City Hall at 200 Texas Street. The Omni Hotels & Resorts is about to expand closer to West Lancaster Avenue, too.

How often do you still head downtown? Tell us ⬇️

This section of downtown is home to several long-term tenants, but changes are on the horizon.

Between 1924 and 1926, the Fort Worth Elevator & Warehouse was constructed at 3700 Alice St., along the then-Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad tracks. In the 1940s, smaller office buildings were added the Worth Heights site.

That was then; this is now.

The silos have not been in use for over two decades, and in March, the city’s Building Standards Commission declared the grain silos to be “substandard and hazardous.” Now, a demolition permit has been issued for one part of the 2.9-acre site, with four other permits pending.

A demolition permit has been issued for part of the site, and four other permits could be on the way.

Right-handed pitcher Kirby Yates and second baseman Marcus Semien will be the only two players to rep the reigning World Champs in the MLB All-Star Game. Despite hosting the game at Globe Life Field on Tuesday, July 16, no players from the Texas Rangers made the starting lineup.

Right-handed pitcher Kirby Yates and second baseman Marcus Semien are the two lone Texas Rangers representing the franchise on their home field.
