General Motors reported its fourth-quarter pre-tax profit fell 54% to $1.8 billion. For 2023, pre-tax profits dropped more than 14% to $12.4 billion compared with $14.5 billion in 2022. Revenue for the quarter was flat at $42.9 billion, but for the full year, it was up 10% to $171.8 billion. Continued demand for GM's high-profit, full-size pickups and SUVs drove gains. The six-week strike by the United Auto Workers union in the fourth quarter cost GM $900 million before taxes and $1.1 billion for the year.

Fort Behavioral Health, a residential treatment center that shut down its adolescent programs after a Star-Telegram investigation into years of abuse and reports of neglect, is ending its remaining adult programs, according to the newspaper. Fort Behavioral's CEO is Stephen Mallick. The owner is Bobby Patton, billionaire and co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

BUSINESS NEWS TODAY 👉 Fort Worth-based Standard Meat Company is renovating a nearly 70-year-old cold storage facility near the Stockyards for a specialized packing plant. The 166,000-square-foot facility at 1101 NE 23rd St. will have the capacity to house new packing and processing technologies to meet the needs of commercial customers, according to CEO Ben Rosenthal.

The new plant will be a historic reminder of two large meat packing plants previously in the Stockyards, Armour and Swift, which closed in 1962 and 1971.

The year ended with a record-high occupancy rate of 95.2%, 1.8 million square feet of space absorbed, and more than 1 million square feet of new construction.
What else is new in retail in DFW? Terminal A at D-FW International Airpot is now home to a....TOYS R US, the first in a US airport. The store sells toys, crafts, games and plush toys. And to welcome shoppers is a life-size Geoffrey the Giraffe 3D sculpture.

Last Friday, it announced the plant and all stores nationwide were closing permanently, affecting more than 700 workers, because of massive liabilities related to asbestos litigation. The company said it would "commence an orderly, out-of-court, wind-down."

👉 BUSINESS NEWS NOW: Fort Worth-based ELSR, owned by Presta Petroleum founder Jonny Brumley, has purchased Alabama and Oklahoma mineral and royalty assets of an undisclosed family-owned oil company. The assets are spread over 30 counties in Oklahoma's Scoop play, and two counties in Alabama.

According to a press release, Presta's strategy is to build a portfolio of long-life assets in Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota that display shallow production declines, high margins, and upside potential. Presta has been active acquiring properties since August of 2018 and has successfully completed over thirty-one acquisitions in Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota.

👉 NEWS OF THE DAY | CULTURE 👈 The coffee war brewing between the competing brands of Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and cast member Cole Hauser apparently has ended. Reports are Sheridan has dropped the copyright infringement suit after 25 days and it's been resolved "with prejudice".
Dismissal with prejudice means that the plaintiff cannot re-file the same claim again in that court.
So what happened?
This whole situation started in October when Hauser launched his coffee brand Free Rein. Sheridan’s coffee partnership with Community Coffee, Bosque Ranch, filed a suit against the Rip actor and his company, saying the logo for Free Rein is “strikingly similar” to the ranch’s.

ICYMI: Diana Saadeh-Jajeh, GameStop’s chief financial officer for about a year, has resigned and will leave the company effective Aug. 11. She is the third CFO in two years and the second high-profile exit in two months. The company’s board had in June ousted its fifth CEO in five years. Shares of Gamestop closed 2.1% lower on Friday, but remain 19% higher year-to-date.

Austin-based commercial real estate company Seco Ventures purchased nine parcels of land, more than 25 acres out of 700 acres known as Upstream at Panther Island. Several of the land parcels are adjacent to a canal or waterfront. Seco Ventures was founded by the Needham Family — John, Joshua, and Jordan. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Fort Worth real estate agency LanCarte Commercial represented the seller.

The annual economic impact of the Burnett School of Medicine at TCU is estimated at $4 billion, and the school is expected to generate about 31,000 jobs for North Texas, according to a Tripp Umbach study.
