In keeping the 89-year tradition alive, Ely-residents and tourists alike congregated to White Pine Fairgrounds to attend the 2024 “Memories in the Making” White Pine County Fair and Horse Racing on Aug. 18-19. Beta Sigma Phi, Agriculture District No. 13, 4-H, White Pine Junior Livestock show and sale committee contributed to another successful year. According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) July 2024 economic report, White Pine County boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the Silver State. The county has an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent, up from 3.4 percent last year. But DETR Chief Economist David Schmidt said it’s a balancing act for counties to maintain a low unemployment rate while making sure businesses have a large enough workforce to sustain a healthy economy....

Firefighters are fully suppressing the 100-plus acre Grassy Mountain Fire burning in pinyon-pine, juniper, brush and grass on public lands west of Pony Springs, about 30 miles north of Pioche, Nev. Ground resources fighting the fire are one Type 1 hand crew and one Type 2 Initial Attack hand crew, four engines, two bulldozers and two water tenders.
