Attention to heart health is the goal of the annual American Heart Awareness Month in February, with its focus on raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles.

One in five deaths each year is the result of heart disease, according to "2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics: A Report of U.S. and Global Data from the American Heart Association," an article published in Circulation, the association's scientific journal. The problem is anticipated to worsen in the next 25 years.

Heart disease, noted Dr. Brett A. Sealove, chief of cardiology at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, is the number one killer in the western world.

"American Heart Awareness Month is a time to promote prevention, screening and awareness to empower patients," he said.

Schools Superintendent Michael Volpe is beginning his third year overseeing the township public schools.

He took some time during his superintendent's report at a board of education meeting on Jan. 27 to look back on what has been accomplished and what is in store for the future.

"We embarked on a journey of significant progress and innovation laying the groundwork for a brighter future for our community," he said. "Our accomplishments span a wide range of areas demonstrating our commitment to excellence in every facet of our district."

When Volpe came into the district, he along with the board enhanced an education foundation by implementing a new strategic plan outlining a vision for the future that had expired in June 2022.

"We significantly passed two crucial referendum questions ensuring adequate staffing levels to provide our students with individualized attention they deserve," he said.

The American Red Cross needs the help of New Jerseyans. There is great need for blood and platelet donations during January, National Blood Donor Month.

"Currently, the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years," said Kim Goetz, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. "And when fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations – like recent winter weather systems – can have a huge effect on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion."

Winter, a time when weather can be a factor in traveling to donate blood, coupled with cold and flu season that keeps people at home, poses a challenge to blood donations. Central New Jersey is home to the Llura Gund Central New Jersey Headquarters and Blood Donation Center in Princeton.
