The American Red Cross needs the help of New Jerseyans. There is great need for blood and platelet donations during January, National Blood Donor Month.

"Currently, the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years," said Kim Goetz, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. "And when fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations – like recent winter weather systems – can have a huge effect on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion."

Winter, a time when weather can be a factor in traveling to donate blood, coupled with cold and flu season that keeps people at home, poses a challenge to blood donations. Central New Jersey is home to the Llura Gund Central New Jersey Headquarters and Blood Donation Center in Princeton.

The bald eagle and osprey have been removed from the state's list of endangered species.

This has been a culmination of more than 40 years of work to restore these iconic birds to New Jersey's landscape, Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said.

The Murphy Administration adopted regulatory changes on Jan. 6. The delisting of eagles and ospreys is contained within a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a rule through publication in the New Jersey Register. The adopted rule makes more than 100 additions, deletions and conservation status updates. The status of the bald eagle has changed from endangered to special concern, and the osprey from threatened to stable.

East Windsor Township has been awarded the Sustainable Jersey Silver Level certification, it's fourth go around.

The township was certified in September with 370 points joining only 25 municipalities statewide that achieved Silver status in 2024.

"This certification recognizes the township's pro-active sustainability efforts in developing community partnerships and outreach, recycling, emergency management, open space and farmland preservation, sustainable land use practices, energy conservation, and furthermore enables East Windsor Township to be eligible for future grants and funding opportunities," said Mayor Janice Mironov. "We are extremely proud of the substantial achievements of our municipality and this prestigious statewide recognition, and the dedicated efforts of our many volunteers.

"Green programs such as open space and farmland preservation and tree replacement efforts have always been a priority of East Windsor Township.

A leak from a repackaging facility in Branchburg has been identified as the cause of drinking water odor and taste issues experienced by New Jersey American Water (NJAW) customers.

Updating the public on Dec. 27, NJAW said the water utility is working closely with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), which has been conducting an investigation, to manage the impacts from the repacking facility leak into a tributary of the Raritan River.

"According to the NJDEP, the material of the spill consisted of compounds, most notably alpha-pinene, which are commonly used as fragrance and food additives," they said in a statement, adding that NJAW continues to collect sampling results, modify their treatment process as well as conduct targeted hydrant flushing in areas as NJDEP directs remediation efforts at the repacking facility leak site in Branchburg.

Two 13-year-old boys have been charged with making terroristic threats for allegedly threatening to harm a teacher and blow up the Melvin H. Kreps Middle School, according to the East Windsor Police Department.

One of the boys allegedly left a threatening voicemail message on a cellphone belonging to the sister of a Kreps Middle School teacher at 3:50 p.m. Dec. 30, police said.

The boy allegedly threatened to shoot the teacher, and to bomb and shoot up the Melvin H. Kreps Middle School, police said.

Detectives investigated the call and traced it to a pair of 13-year-old boys who allegedly left the threatening voicemail message. They also determined that the boys did not have access to guns.

The boys, whose names were not released because they are juveniles, were charged with making terroristic threats on juvenile petitions, police said. Court action is pending.
