The Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) will soon announce the preservation of a 28-acre tract of forest in the Mount Rose Ridge.

The property, located off of Cleveland Road, expands upon the already impressive 387-acre Mount Rose Preserve, creating a total of 415 acres of contiguous permanently preserved open space in Hopewell Valley.

The heart of the Mount Rose Preserve was purchased by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, FoHVOS, Hopewell Township and Mercer County in 2015. Preservation partners have continued to grow and expand upon the impressive public preserve since then, according to a press release.

The Giardino tract is 100% wooded including forested wetlands and upland forest on a diabase ridge.

The intact forest provides essential breeding habitat for songbirds, including Veery and Northern Parula, wetland forest vital to salamanders and frogs, and a safe harbor for rare plant species such as Wild Comfrey.

The American Red Cross needs the help of New Jerseyans. There is great need for blood and platelet donations during January, National Blood Donor Month.

"Currently, the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years," said Kim Goetz, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. "And when fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations – like recent winter weather systems – can have a huge effect on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion."

Winter, a time when weather can be a factor in traveling to donate blood, coupled with cold and flu season that keeps people at home, poses a challenge to blood donations. Central New Jersey is home to the Llura Gund Central New Jersey Headquarters and Blood Donation Center in Princeton.

Hopewell Valley Regional School District (HVRSD) is gauging resident interest for full day universal pre-school.

This district has released an anonymous survey and has asked people with young children who will be eligible for pre-school in the next five years to participate.

The survey can be found on the school district's website with a deadline by Jan. 30.

The school district is seeking to determine the community's interest as the state continues to provide funds to expand or establish full day preschool programs.

In October 2024, Gov. Phil Murphy and Acting Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer announced about $20 million in state funds to 18 school districts in 2025 to expand or establish full day preschool programs in the 2024-25 school year.

The programs that were awarded funds opened programs by winter. The counties of the awarded school districts included counties in Burlington, Monmouth, and Ocean.

Three qualified water utilities are interested in Hopewell Borough's potential sale of its water system.

After approving a resolution on Jan. 2, Borough Council accepted the qualifications of New Jersey American Water, Aqua New Jersey, and Veolia Water New Jersey, Inc.

"We reviewed their credentials, and our professionals did as well," Council President David Mackie said. "We determined that all three meet the qualifications. They are now qualified to receive an actual request for proposal (RFP) because that is a two-step process."

Council, in the same resolution, authorized the borough to issue RFPs to the three companies on the potential sale of the borough's water system.

"...we will be releasing a RFP to those three companies for them to put together their possible interest and proposal for us to evaluate," Mayor Ryan Kennedy said.

With the new year underway, Hopewell Borough swore in Debra Stuhler and Anthony Fuller for their three-year terms on Borough Council.

During the reorganization meeting on Jan. 2, Stuhler, who earned her third term on council in November, and Fuller, who secured his first term in the general election, were each given their oaths of office by Mayor Ryan Kennedy.

Stuhler is looking forward to 2025.

"We are going to have a great year," she said.

Fuller said he appreciates the opportunity to join the council.

"2025 will bring significant decisions for the borough and I think it is a huge privilege to be here at this time, he said. "I think it is easy to get lost in some of the procedural details, some of the facts, and key data behind some of the questions.

"I think we also need to remember the human and community aspect of these big decisions. Some of the things we are facing this year I think will have repercussions for years and generations to come.

The bald eagle and osprey have been removed from the state's list of endangered species.

This has been a culmination of more than 40 years of work to restore these iconic birds to New Jersey's landscape, Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said.

The Murphy Administration adopted regulatory changes on Jan. 6. The delisting of eagles and ospreys is contained within a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a rule through publication in the New Jersey Register. The adopted rule makes more than 100 additions, deletions and conservation status updates. The status of the bald eagle has changed from endangered to special concern, and the osprey from threatened to stable.

Courtney Peters-Manning will serve another year as Hopewell Township mayor.

During the Hopewell Township Committee's reorganization meeting, fellow committee members unanimously voted for Peters-Manning to continue leading the governing body and township on Jan. 2.

She previously served in the position for 2022 and 2024. Committeeman Kevin Kuchinski nominated Peters-Manning as mayor. There were no other nominations.

"Courtney has served our community tirelessly since first being elected in 2019, Kuchinski said, adding that while they don't always agree, he is confident the township committee can build on the progress made with Peters-Manning as mayor. "She is a strong advocate for our first responders and has led the charge to support them with new equipment and increased staffing.

"She has challenged the township team to find new and more efficient ways to deliver the services our residents expect for less.
