Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a significant milestone in American history. It's a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates African American culture, heritage, and resilience. The story of Juneteenth begins with the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. This proclamation declared all enslaved people in Confederate states to be free. However, the enforcement of this proclamation largely depended on the advance of Union troops, and many enslaved people remained unaware of their freedom. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, over two years later, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He issued General Order No. 3, which informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free, marking the official end of slavery in the last Confederate state. The news of freedom sparked joyous celebrations among African American communities. The first Juneteenth, celebrated in 1866, was marked by prayer meetings, singing, and the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. These gatherings became an annual tradition, growing in scale and significance over the years. Throughout the years, Juneteenth has evolved, encompassing not only the celebration of freedom but also the rich cultural heritage and achievements of African Americans. [ What is Pi? ] First things first, what exactly is Pi? Pi is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is an irrational number, meaning it goes on forever without repeating. The first few digits of Pi are 3.14159, but it has been calculated to trillions of digits! [ History of Pi Day ] Host: "Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The date, March 14th, was chosen because it corresponds to the first three digits of Pi - 3.14. Since then, Pi Day has become a worldwide celebration of mathematics and all things Pi!"
