Edna Hyer, a 90-year-old from Orchard Park, is not letting her age slow her down. On June 22, Hyer broke the national women’s 1-mile record for the 90- to 94-year-old age group at the USA Track and Field Niagara Master’s Outdoor Championships held at Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester. She has competed in over 2,000 races and explained that the health benefits from running really keep her going.

Members of Orchard Park Middle and High School took flight after being granted approval by the Federal Aviation Administration for two Recognized Identification Areas (FRIA). At the Orchard Park Middle School, students learn the basics of drones, their practical uses and the FAA regulations surrounding safe drone operation. An Orchard Park tradition since 1961, the Orchard Park Festival of the Arts and the Health, Fitness and Business Expo is confirmed for another year. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Highmark Stadium Parking Lot #7, people can visit 275 various vendors with an assortment of live arts and crafts demos. The people of WNY root for the Bills, Bandits and Bisons, but sports fan may have more to cheer for come 2026. On June 6, Buffalo Pro Soccer hosted an event at Wayland Brewing to announce the formation of a professional soccer team for the United Soccer League in Buffalo. President of Buffalo Pro Soccer, Peter Marlette Jr., said the organization has received significant funding for the project and the group must continue to raise funds and host events to get the word out to the public. Marlette also said he hopes to have deep Open Cup runs and eventually host MLS teams once the team is established.

A new addition has been made to the Orchard Park Recreation Department as Adam Houle was appointed as the assistant recreation director at the Orchard Park Town Board meeting on June 5. Houle, who most recently was working for the Town of Hamburg, said he was excited to get this opportunity and be a part of the community. He said he loves trying to get people involved and is looking forward to finding things everyone can enjoy. Houle's position is effective Monday, June 24.

On June 5, Chief Patrick Fitzgerald recognized the officers and employees that were responsible for giving Ron Wojcik a second chance at life. A life-threatening incident at Orchard Park Country Club put Wojcik into cardiac arrest, but due to the swiftness and bravery of several country club employees and nearby responding officers, Wojcik was able to be transported to the hospital quickly where he was treated. Wojcik attended the June 5 town board meeting to thank all those who saved his life.

Students in Peter Herman's class at Orchard Park Middle School are learning life lessons and simultaneously helping the community through community service. Herman, who has been running this project for 10 years, said he wanted his students to achieve something in class and not just read a textbook. One student decided to run a lemonade stand with his younger brother in order to raise funds for his art teacher's brain tumor treatment.

The Eagle Scout project, headed Chris Rushton of Troop 285, was a collaboration with the Chestnut Ridge Conservancy for a much needed project to replace the old benches. Emil Erlandson, an Industrial Arts and Technology Education teacher and Technology Club advisor at Orchard Park High School, recently found an opportunity for his students to venture beyond the stars. On May 17, a group of Orchard Park High School students had the opportunity to meet with a NASA employee via Microsoft Teams in the school’s auditorium. Students had the opportunity to listen to a presentation from an engineer at Kennedy Space Station and ask questions to really get insights on the career field. Erlaandson hopes to bring this trip back for students in the future.

The Orchard Park Village Plaza, located at 4190 N. Buffalo St., is set to host the Summer Kick-off Party in the Plaza from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, sponsored by the Carson Senfield Impact Foundation and the Byrd House. Bridget and Daren Senfield created this foundation in memory of their son, Carson, who was tragically shot and killed on his 19th birthday while in Tampa. Bridget and Daren hope to partner with Orchard Park business organizations and sports organizations to build an impact center to have counseling services available for school and college students along with an art and music studio.

From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 1, the Orchard Park American Legion Post 567 will be hosting a fundraiser at Wings Meeting Place, 3964 California Road, to raise funds to put towards building a new Memorial Wall in front of the post. After leaving their last location on North Buffalo Street in 2019, Post 567 had to dissassemble their wall brick by brick and store all the pieces. Now, they are trying to bring that staple memorial back to make their Ellis Road location truly feel like home.

The Lady Quakers went undefeated 5-0 across Division I competition, driven by a cast of talented student-athletes, winning all of their contests by at least a 50-point margin. OP girls earned the division title on the heels of a stellar spring campaign.

The boys team had a 4-0 divisional record heading into the final contest with undefeated Jamestown, winning that contest, ending up as divisional champions.

For the May 21 annual school vote, the Orchard Park High School gymansium was greeted by voters throughout the day as they filled out their ballots. The 2024-25 operating budget, the $1.5 million purchase of 75 Bank St. and the the $1.2 million to purchase and finance buses and other equipment was approved by resident voters by a large margin. Incumbent Karen Sreniawski and newcomer Ty Romanello were also elected to the OPCSD Board of Education.

At the May 13 Orchard Park Village Board meeting, current and old concers were addressed with the passing of two local laws regarding parking and water services. The first local law passed will prohibit for the entire length of Harvard Place on the north side of the street and the entire length of Larned Lane on the east side of the street. The second local law passed will no longer have nonresident water services tapped by the Village of Orchard Park.

Like many of the students she graduated with, all of them came out of high school and began college during the COVID-19 pandemic.
