The City of Brookings Regional Landfill will be closed Monday, September 2, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. That means:

𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘: The City of Brookings Regional Landfill will host its fourth annual Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Event from 8 AM to 12 Noon in the Dacotah Bank Center parking lot. The 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆 event is open to residents in Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake and Moody counties, all of which are in the landfill’s service area. 🚧 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘: 𝟮𝟮𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛 & 𝟮𝟬𝗧𝗛 𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 🚧
In preparation for the City of Brookings Slurry/Chip Seal Project and the elimination of the dedicated left turn lane on southbound 22nd Avenue South, the City will be making modifications to the 22nd Avenue South and 20th Street South intersection signal on 𝗧𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬, 𝗝𝗨𝗟𝗬 𝟮𝟱, 𝗔𝗧 𝟯 𝗣𝗠.

This modification is required due to elimination of the southbound dedicated turn lane on 22nd Avenue South. Drivers should be observant, abide by the signal lights and drive cautiously/slowly until 22nd Avenue South is re-striped early next week. 🚙

Inclement weather or winds higher than 15 mph will cause fogging to be suspended and rescheduled.

The City’s ground-fogging equipment is noisy and travels between 10 and 15 mph. The mosquito-control pickups are identified and travel with flashing amber and white lights, so people can easily recognize them.

Although mosquito-control insecticides pose low risks, some people may prefer to minimize or avoid exposure to these chemicals. Some common-sense steps to help reduce exposure include staying indoors during the fogging activity and closing windows and doors.

Since May, the City of Brookings Public Works - Street Division has been proactively treating ponds and wet areas throughout the city with mosquito larvicide in an attempt to kill the larvae before they can become biting adult mosquitoes. However, the combination of frequent rains and warm temperatures have created the ideal environment for the mosquito population to explode in July.
