Thanks to the wonderful people at Birmingham Home & Garden for the display they gave this story. And even more my thanks to the incredibly talented folks at Barrett Architecture Studio for trusting me with this shoot. As a well-known photographer says "if you want to take beautiful pictures you need to stand in front of beautiful things."

Inspired by the encircling waterfront, rocky shoreline and magnificent tree canopy of their Smith Lake property, these homeowners looked to Barrett Architecture Studio for an equally captivating lake house.

A story I photographed last summer for the delightful writer Julia Leonard and Pittsburg Pennsylvania's Table Magazine on the food scene here in Birmingham.

It’s time to get to know Pittsburgh's Southern sibling. Here's where to eat, drink, and visit in Birmingham, Alabama.

The fair-haired boy I once was is now a hair challenged older man. I wore hats when younger trying to be stylish or cool. I need protection from the sun now but I would still like to look good too. I just received this gorgeous Panama hat from and I love it so much I was inspired to shoot a few self-portraits to share. I even dragged out a bamboo rod I made as a prop. Great people behind this based company. This Lynnville no. 2 arrived packed with care and they even threw in a . My old worn Panama I bought years ago is now officially retired. Thank you so much and Col Littleton.

Third times a charm. I’ve battled through three early dawn shoots to get this exterior for the architects. Each previous time lighting would go out too soon and/or sprinklers would come on or a humid deep-South fog obscured the building. Today it finally came together with the help of the SouthPoint Bank Senior VP who was there early to overcome lighting issues. Thanks so much to the great people at

Heavy rain and dark skies this morning as we woke. Nothing pressing on my to-do list except handle the bounty of tomatoes pulling up on the kitchen counter. So before I got started I took some to the basement and let them show off their modeling skills.

There were more than you see here. Now some are reducing on the stove for sauce we’ll enjoy in winter. Some made up a lunch sandwich. Some were roasted with my garden poblanos and habaneros and made a great salsa. And some still await their future on the kitchen counter.

Finally arrived in Little Rock to see and speak at my show in the Old Statehouse Museum. On the way into town I stopped at one of the all-time great bbq shacks, Craig’s in DeValls Bluff. Hadn’t been in years but it’s still a great place, worth the side trip off I-40.

This warhorse went to many news assignments with me back in the 80’s.
I don’t have all the lenses I used to have but this 50 1.4 is still hanging in.
Recently I decided to have the body, lens and MD-4 cleaned up and brought back to working order.
It was mostly just cleaning and lubing. Just got it all back and had to share a photo of it.
I used to say you could take an F3 and hammer in tent stakes with it and then turn around and take a fine picture of the tent with it.

I just saw that it’s African American Music Appreciation Month. I think that pretty much covers most American music. While photographing for the US Civil Rights Trail I got to shoot the amazing and powerful National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. It’s right down on Broadway and may be the very best place to stop if you’re in town.
You can also celebrate the music at other sites on the Trail at the International African American Museum in Charleston, the great STAX Museum of American Soul and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC.

One of the classic continuous problems shooting interior photography is mirrors, especially bathroom mirrors. In the film days it was often a nightmare and bizarre yoga-like contortions were often employed. Another technique was to hide the camera behind something reflected on the counter. Digital and photoshop have helped. But the new Generative AI in photoshop has eliminated the problem. This was from today’s shoot and took about 11 seconds for Adobe to make me go away.

There really are angels among us. They would deny it of course. But to the families they help every day and to our community they are lifelines.

When I worked a corporate job the staff was strongly encouraged to donate to United Way from our paycheck. It seemed competitive with other companies CEO’s who gave the most.

Last month I spent six eye-opening days photographing various places for the United Way that benefit from their work. I had no idea how desperate the need, how varied the help and how much their contributions make a difference to so many. Families dealing with autism or cerebral palsy or women and children escaping family violence and many others find help in organizations funded by United Way.

Most of all I was so deeply impressed by the people on the front line every day dealing with these needs and making lives better. These are just a few of the faces I began to realize were angels.

Monday I got to photograph this stunning home on Smith Lake designed by the great people at Barrett Architecture Studio. Beautifully sited on a peninsula it works so well with the environment. Lake views from throughout the home which combines great materials and color. If I lived there I’m not sure I’d ever leave.

One year ago today, we celebrated the grand reopening of the Flagg Mountain Tower. So thankful to see this tower restored and reopened. So happy to see so much accomplished at this lovely Alabama Forestry Commission property and the gateway to the Pinhoti Trail. Special thanks to Art Meripol Photography for the fantastic shot!
