"Of all the things on our wish lists for Christmas each year, being home for the holidays with the people we love ranks at the top for most. ... But each year as I think about finding my way home during the holiday season, I am quickly reminded of the great, often hidden irony behind the very first Christmas. Namely, Jesus left His home to make the first Christmas possible."

"We cannot truly experience Christmas until we bow before Jesus as God in human flesh. Fully appreciating His cradle requires our first acknowledging His crown," writes pastor Adam Dooley.

In a year with ongoing overseas conflict, economic challenges, natural disasters and a volatile presidential election, the current surge in Bible sales may be due to an increase in anxiety, uncertainty about the future and a search for hope.

Advent season begins tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 1).

“Celebrating Advent is important because it offers us a lens through which to view Christ’s coming into the world: not as a secular, winter holiday where materialism rules the day, but as a holy day and time where Jesus ushers in the Kingdom of Heaven to earth,” Alan Miller, pastor of Orange Baptist Church in Orange, Virginia, explains. “We get to be a part of the incarnation of Christ by inviting Him into our hearts. During Advent, we have an opportunity to make room in our hearts and lives for the true gift of Christmas. That yearly rhythm helps us to orient our lives toward His coming and our receiving Him.

"Advent is not what our culture or our world expects; it is not the Christmas lights and happy music. Advent is about preparing. Advent is about waiting."

Share in the comment section below how you plan to mark Advent this year.
