Alt Bmt Although progress has been painfully slow, the LGBT community has accrued enough momentum to bring social equality to the brink of reality.

Dear Readers,

In 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn were incited to riot after years of brutal humiliation and imprisonment at the hands of a homophobic police force. Those brave men and women dared to resist the currents of a turbulently unjust whirlpool society; and in doing so, created a watershed moment that has rippled through generations of LGBTQ individuals. The 43 years since the Stonewal

l Inn Riots have seen an indefatigable effort by G**s and Le****ns to gain acknowledgement as a community within the American social structure. Today's generation of g**s and le****ns are on the verge of attaining the rights to marriage, employment, reproduction; and to live free of discriminatory and oppressive legislative policies. While the progress of the LGBT community has created a sociological breakthrough that heralds the potential for unprecedented equality, LGBT individuals today often find that they are far more closely scrutinized than their forbears. The sociopolitical atmosphere has developed into toxic extremes that have corroded the moral compasses of those who would deny minority groups basic human rights. This atmosphere has necessitated the local and global unification of LGBTQ peoples. Such a grand unification, even in Beaumont, TX, would enable the LGBT community to stand firmly against oppressive political and social forces; thereby enabling the community to reach its full potential as thriving, beautifully unique culture.

Celia Cruz, a Cuban American singer who was known as the Queen of Salsa, will be the first Afro-Latina woman to appear on American quarters as part of a U.S. Mint initiative. “When people hear me sing,” she told The New York Times in 1985, “I want them to be happy, happy, happy. I don’t want them thinking about when there’s not any money, or when there’s fighting at home. My message is always felicidad — happiness.”

DEVELOPING: Texas man who worked against mask measures dies from COVID-19, wife pregnant with 4th child

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — A man who led efforts in his Central Texas community against mask wearing and other preventative measures during the coronavirus pandemic has died from COVID-19, one month after being admitted to the emergency room.

Caleb Wallace died on Saturday, his wife Jessica Wallace said on a GoFundMe page where she had been posting updates on his condition, the San Angelo Standard-Times reported Saturday. He was 30 years old and a father of three children. His wife is pregnant with their fourth child.

“Caleb has peacefully passed on. He will forever live in our hearts and minds,” Jessica Wallace wrote.

On July 4, 2020, Caleb Wallace helped organize “The Freedom Rally” in San Angelo. People at the event carried signs that criticized the wearing of masks, business closures, the science behind COVID-19, and liberal media. He also organized the group “The San Angelo Freedom Defenders.”

“We are not real happy with the current state of America at the moment,” Wallace said in July 2020.

In April, he wrote a letter to the San Angelo school district, demanding it rescind all its COVID-19 protocols.

Jessica Wallace told the newspaper her husband began experiencing COVID-19 symptoms on July 26 but refused to get tested or go to the hospital. He instead took high doses of Vitamin C, zinc aspirin and ivermectin, an anti-parasitic medicine that officials have urged people not to take for COVID-19.

Caleb Wallace was taken to an emergency room on July 30 and since Aug. 8, he had been unconscious and on a ventilator.

A day before his death, Jessica Wallace has posted on the family’s GoFundMe page that her husband “was an imperfect man but he loved his family and his little girls more than anything.”

“To those who wished him death, I’m sorry his views and opinions hurt you. I prayed he’d come out of this with a new perspective and more appreciation for life. I can’t say much more than that because I can’t speak for him,” she said.

"I cannot stand by and not do anything." - PAISD superintendent Dr. Mark Porterie

BREAKING: PAISD superintendent implementing mask mandate beginning Monday

The Port Arthur ISD superintendent, Dr. Mark Porterie, is implementing a mask mandate beginning Monday. Students, staff and visitors to any PAISD facility are mandated to wear masks.

"I cannot stand by and not do anything," said Dr. Porterie.

In a statement, Dr. Porterie says the rising number of COVID-19 cases locally prompted his decision. A number of students and staff have tested positive since school began August 11.

"Unfortunately, 40% of our staff have chosen not to be vaccinated at this time," said Dr. Porterie.

Porterie says he'll recommend to the board at its next regular meeting that it amend the district's dress code to make masks part of the required attire for students and staff on campus and at off-campus school-related activities.

PAISD becomes the first district in the area to put in place a mask mandate.

BISD had a mask policy item on its Thursday night meeting agenda but left in place the option to wear masks, choosing not to vote on a mandate.

A number of districts in Texas have already implemented mask mandates.

The school district's decision comes after the Texas Education Agency says -- for now -- it will stop enforcing Gov. Abbott's ban on mask mandates.

TEA's move came after the Texas Supreme Court ruled against Gov. Abbott, who has been trying to prevent mask mandates.
