⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book Review: The Half Moon by Mary Beth Keane
This is the story of Malcolm and Jess. Not just Malcolm and Jess the married couple, but Malcolm and Jess, the two separate people who are living parallel lives as they each struggle to accept the fact that kids are not in the cards for them, despite years of trying.
Malcolm is also the new and proud owner of The Half Moon, a place he worked his entire adult life and always dreamed of owning. As he throws himself into work with a perhaps unrealistic optimism, Jess struggles to find her place and sets out on her own journey of self-discovery.
Set over the course of a single snowstorm, things get messy, secrets come out, and bonds are tested.
Although mostly about Malcolm and Jess, there’s also an entire storyline about a bar patron who goes missing and it’s a mini story within the story.
The book is…. fine.
I generally love books that have stories within the story, but this one didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
The characters I’d have liked to get to know better were under-developed and there were a few spots where a storyline ended so abruptly I wondered where the rest of the paragraph was.
Even so, the reading experience was, like I said, fine.
I didn’t dislike it and I know there are others who love The Half Moon, so don’t just take my word for it. BUT, if you do take my word for it and are interested in the author, check out Ask Again, Yes. It’s been a few years since I read it so I don’t remember details, but I do remember liking it more.
