I had a wonderful time reconnecting with my singing teacher colleagues at our regional NATS conference at University of Nebraska, Kearney this last weekend! Three of my students competed in a combined total of four categories and brought home three awards! 🎉

Congratulations to my students who participated in CO/WY NATS student auditions this weekend at University of Northern Colorado! (And a HUGE thank you to our collaborative pianist, Lori Hermanson!)

All of my competing students came home with first or second place certificates!

🎵 Kathleen Allen and Bill Easton participated "for comments only," which means they elected to be evaluated without competing for prizes. They also made our studio extremely proud!

Many thanks to my colleagues who adjudicated my students and to the many volunteers who made the event run so smoothly!

CHRISTMAS GIFTS for the MUSIC STUDENT:
- Pay to have their piano tuned. A tuned instrument is a joy to everyone!
- Give them a gift certificate to Amazon or MusicNotes.com so they can buy some fun new sheet music. Music students need not be limited to the music assigned in lessons!
- Invest in piano bench cushions - those meant for piano benches can feel so much better than makeshift height solutions like couch pillows and phone books. And you can't put a price on proper height alignment.
- Metronome: if your music student has trouble hearing the metronome app on their phone while they're playing, consider a standalone metronome or a small speaker to amplify the app.
- Take them to a concert/show. Inspire them with live performance! Who hasn't come home from a show with a burning desire to make their own music? Plus, you get the quality time together, too.

Congratulations to the students from my studio who participated in the NATS West Central Region Student Auditions on Friday and Saturday at Colorado State University! My studio entered four singers in a total of five unique auditions, and all five advanced from prelims to semifinals, with four advancing to finals, placing, and qualifying for NATIONALS in the spring! Very proud of all of you! Thank you to our secret weapon, Lori Hermanson, and congratulations to Ryan Sellers (1st & 2nd), Tanner Harwell (4th) Kathleen Allen (4th) and Gary Williams!

We are thrilled that Kelley Hijleh will be the first presenter in our 2022-2023 IVTOM Masterclass series with "Vocal Acoustics: First Resonance Interactions and Why They Matter." The position of the first resonance in relation to the first 3 harmonics is an important aspect in the timbre of the voice and changes in these interactions are often felt by the singer and can be negotiated in different ways. Using Voce Vista and live demonstration, we will examine these interactions from different perspectives seeking to clarify advantages and pitfalls of the acoustics of registration for the treble voice.

IVTOM is committed to providing ongoing voice education for its members, and is subsidizing this masterclass series.

CONGRATULATIONS to Matthew Kleyman and Kathleen Allen, who each won FIRST PLACE in their respective categories at the NATS West Central Region Student Auditions! Matthew won the Upper High School Classical category for Tenor, Baritone and Bass voices, and has qualified for the 2nd year in a row to enter the NATS National Student Auditions in the spring! Kathleen won the Adult/Non-Traditional Classical category for all voice types, which sadly, is not a national category. Matthew Kleyman has advanced from the preliminaries to the second round in BOTH of his national voice competitions this week, the NATS National Student Auditions and the Classical Singer Vocal Competition! The announcements for advancement to the third rounds will come between May 28 and June 3rd. Stay tuned!
