Good morning, world! Here we are for September with adorable Ms. Lucy on our cover. She's with Mountain Pet Rescue and is just patiently awaiting her new loving family. Fall is upon us and as we welcome cooler temps, it becomes more enjoyable to participate in outdoor events and some great hiking with our 4-legged buddies.

One event we found out about after the magazine was completed was the Annual Blessing of the Pets happening on Saturday, September 18 from 10-11:30 am at Mills River Presbyterian Church, 10 Presbyterian Church Road in Mills River. The half-hour service celebrates the life of both current and former pets. Residents of Henderson County and throughout the Asheville area are invited to bring their cherished pets to the outdoor blessing. As is the tradition with the event, each pet will receive their own personal blessing. Rev. Merriam Alexander, the dog mother to two Boston Terriers, will lead the service and offer the individual blessings. Special messages, prayers and readings will be shared during the service. A free will love offering called the “Dog Bowl Donation” will be collected during the service to benefit the New Hope program at Blue Ridge Humane Society. People may also contribute canned or bagged pet food.

This month, featured articles include a new TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program that Friends of Madison County Animals (FOMCA) is offering; how the DOJ, using taxpayer money, is funding training programs that harm and kill animals; why snakes have forked tongues; how bears aren't mean, just hungry ... and more! Well, 2021 is half past ... although since Covid, time has become somewhat illusory anyway. So be it. It's July folks ... and summer is in full swing. Lots of good stuff happening in nature and with our pet rescue friends. Fundraisers, adoptions, nature walks and more.

Happy June to all! Beautiful days in the mountains ... much to be grateful for ... especially our pet pals. June is Adopt-a-Cat Month ... so in keeping with that tradition, we are featuring beautiful Bagna as our cover girl. This sweetie is in the care of Asheville Humane Society and is one lovely gal, so if you're seeking a feline companion, she might be the one.

Some great cat articles if you're considering a kitty or have a new cat at home. Be sure to read Adopting the Right Cat for You and Why is My Cat Doing That? Happy May Day! Another lovely spring day in the mountains. But alas, sorry to those who have allergies - it can be brutal at this time of year. But there's no denying the beauty!

We welcome BOOMER to the Critter cover for May! This handsome boy is a special dog looking for a patient, loving family. He’s a Terrier mix who arrived at Foothills Humane Society with his sisters as pups. Read more about him on page 3. Tomorrow begins 'Be Kind To Animals' week. What we really need is 365 days of kindness ... towards animals and one another ... renewable every year!

Good stuff in this issue. Hey friends - hope you're enjoying this brief cold snap - surely it's all spring-to-summer after this is past! (She mumbles, trying to remain upbeat while shivering at the thought of the 12 degree wind chill this morning.)

But I digress! The reason we're here is to see what's new in Critterland! We've got gorgeous Kai on the cover for April. He's in the care of Asheville Humane Society - so scoot on over there to see this handsome, blue-eyed boy.

It's also Easter - and that means bunny time - so be sure to check out the article about what it takes to be a successful bunny parent before you make the final decision. We've got a good read in Point of View about the intersection of wildlife, conservation and animal welfare; hummingbirds are returning soon, so clean your feeders and keep watch; learn a few cool things about koalas; let the young ones have fun with the Earth Day survey on the Kids' Page; and be on the lookout for bears - alone - but especially with cubs. Good March everyone! Spring is on the way ... and we're seeing it with daffodils and forsythia beginning to pop. This month we've got sweet Huckleberry on our cover ... just another guy looking for love. Read more about this adorable and talkative feline on page 3. Good news on the legal front. Legislation has been introduced to allow the U.S. Department of Justice to form an 'Animal Cruelty Crimes' division to enable federal charges be brought against those who commit acts of cruelty and abuse to animals. Fingers crossed. Also learn the signs that help let you know when your puppy becomes an 'adult' dog; a new text program that helps find lost pets; Esther Neonatal Kitten Alliance, a newborn kitten nursery, has opened to help the smallest ones who are ill or injured; and learn some fun facts about the Barred Owl. Also be sure to check Critter Notes for all things virtual and a few in-person adoptions. And last, but not least, with warmer weather upon us, now would be a good time to brush up on your BearWise Basics on page 23. Our bears are definitely beginning to emerge.
