As a Producer and Director, I put a lot of faith in the Directors, Writers, Actors, and Artists I produce for and expect the same treatment. No project is ever the same and some projects take more time than others. Things like unexpected life events, pandemics, strikes, miscommunication, conflict, and insecurity can impede works of art, temporarily. Things will inevitably go wrong in either production or post. My goal is always to finish what I start to the benefit of not only one artist but all involved. To do that, our work, our collaborations, have to start (and finish) with TRUST. In the "Theatre World" there is a saying: "Trust the Process," and being a Thespian, I still take that idea to heart. I've worked with directors who complete a film in 48 hours and I worked with others who take months or years to complete one. Personally, I've also been that director, and there's no explanation for that because artistry is not logical. Though the quote below is mostly about empowering women as directors, I think part of that is just trusting what each artist's process is and making sure everyone on your creative team is on the same page. Lead with questions, not accusations and if someone needs more of a nudge or help, be the type of person who can see a problem ahead of time and help solve it without creating more problems. Anyway, all that to say, be nicer to women directors! We don't direct like men, nor do we want to.
We're loving this sentiment from Chanya Button! Great energy for this !
