Count Dracula’s castle really does exist. Bran Castle in Transylvania was the inspiration for Irish author Bram Stoker. He never actually visited the castle, but based his fictional version on images and descriptions of the place.

The first stone castles built were cold, dark, smelly and damp. Inside the castle walls, floor coverings consisted of straw rushes and, later, sweet smelling herbs to mask the smell of animal excrement, grease, rotting food and beer.

Some castles had secret passageways and hidden rooms… very mysterious!

These hidden spaces were used for various purposes, such as escaping during times of danger or storing precious treasures.

Many castles were surrounded by moats, which were deep ditches filled with water.

The moat served as an additional layer of defence.

It made it difficult for invaders to get over the castle walls.

To access the castle, a drawbridge would be lowered over the moat, acting as a bridge for people to cross.

Long ago, castles were built to defend.

They were positioned on hills or near water because it made for a great location to spot approaching enemies!

With thick stone walls, drawbridges, and moats, castles provided protection to those living inside.
