Zambia Votes: News Brief
13 August, 2021
The Head of the African Union (AU) Observation Mission, along with AU observers deployed across the ten provinces, was out and about, observed the opening, the voting process and the closing. At the polling stations visited, polls opened largely on time, ballot was mostly secret except for the overcrowding in some places. COVID 19 protocols such as wearing of face masks, provision of hand washing stations and sanitizers were observed in most of the stations although there was no social distancing. We also observed that Party Agents, of particularly the two major contenders we visited and they participated actively in all the procedures of voters verification, ballot sorting, counting, recording, authenticating of results at the polling station as well as in sealing of the ballot boxes. As well, the AU observed the presence of local and international observers and monitors in the polling stations visited.
The process was transparent, orderly and generally peaceful. The people of Zambia, the stakeholders involved in organizing these elections to this point, should be proud of themselves for a job well done. The AU looks forward to and urges Zambia, particularly the leaders, to sustain these commendable efforts.
The AU reiterates it's appeal to all concerned to continue to keep the peace, and when and where there are disagreements, to use the official/ legitimate dispute resolution mechanisms. By all means, this exercise should be concluded to the satisfaction and pride of this great nation of Zambia, and indeed, Africa.
