Mohamed Kamarainba Reflects on Incarceration and Shares Troubling Photos

By: Mohamed Osman Bangura(Political)

Former presidential candidate of the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) and political activist, Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has sparked widespread reactions with the release of disturbing photographs of himself taken after his release from Pademba Road Correctional Center.
Kamarainba, who was detained for nearly four years during a sexual allegations trial, described the ordeal as a deliberate attempt to silence him for being “the voice of the voiceless” in Sierra Leone.

In a powerful social media post accompanying the photos, Kamarainba accused the government, led by President Julius Maada Bio, of targeting him unjustly.
"Julius Maada Bio almost killed me, just for standing up for the people and being the voice for the voiceless in Sierra Leone," he wrote. The photos reveal a visibly frail and emaciated Kamarainba, underscoring the severity of his suffering during his detention.

Reflecting on his time behind bars, Kamarainba described the physical and emotional toll it took on him. He expressed gratitude to God for preserving his life amidst what he described as life-threatening conditions in prison.
“I just want to share these pictures so you all can understand the pain and suffering I endured during my almost four (4) years of incarceration and imprisonment. God kept me alive and will continue to protect me,” he added.

In his post, Kamarainba vowed to continue his fight for justice and democracy in Sierra Leone, despite the hardships he has faced.
"I will never give up for my people and country. May God heal Sierra Leone," he concluded, striking a defiant tone that has resonated with many of his supporters.

The release of these photos has reignited debates about the state of human rights in Sierra Leone, with calls for greater transparency and accountability in the judicial system. Supporters have rallied around Kamarainba, expressing outrage over the alleged maltreatment and emphasizing the need for justice and reforms.

Kao Denero's Disgraceful Facebook Rant Sparks Outrage

By: Mohamed Osman Bangura(Political)

Entertainment Ambassador Kao Denero has ignited a storm of criticism following a reckless Facebook post about his performance at the EHYOR Festival on January 11, 2025. His post, stating, *“The show sef me nor see crowd. Notto da kine crowd me use to. Just go collect money n cam na me hose saful. Sunday work out,”* has been widely condemned as unprofessional and disrespectful.

Fans and entertainment stakeholders have expressed disappointment, accusing him of belittling the event and its audience. Critics argue that as an ambassador, Kao Denero should exemplify humility and professionalism, not entitlement.

The post has raised serious questions about his ability to represent Sierra Leone's entertainment industry. Many have called on him to reflect on his responsibilities and issue an apology, emphasizing the need for public figures to uphold accountability and respect in their actions and words.

Africell CEO Celebrates Company Milestones at Annual Management Retreat

Africell, a leading telecommunications provider in Sierra Leone, hosted its annual management retreat at the picturesque Tokeh Resort from January 11-12, 2025. The event provided an essential platform for the company’s top executives and stakeholders to reflect on the previous year’s accomplishments and set strategic goals for the upcoming year, with a strong focus on development and community engagement.

The retreat featured a compelling address from Ziad Dalloul, the Chairman Africell Group, who traced the company’s remarkable journey in Sierra Leone’s competitive telecommunications landscape. Dalloul emphasized Africell’s resilience in overcoming significant challenges, ultimately establishing the company as the nation’s leading telecom provider.

Reflecting on Africell’s entry into the Sierra Leonean market, Dalloul recounted the dominance of Celtel, which held a near-monopoly and imposed high interconnection fees on competitors. “Many viewed the market as a lost cause due to Celtel’s stronghold, but we saw opportunities where others saw only barriers,” he remarked. Through perseverance and a commitment to community welfare, Africell successfully shifted market dynamics, reducing prices and fostering healthy competition.

Dalloul pinpointed the high interconnection fees as one of the company’s greatest challenges, stating that Africell had to appeal to government regulators to create a more equitable playing field. Although the initial response was tepid, the company’s growing market share prompted regulatory changes that ultimately benefited consumers by lowering telecom costs.

“Our presence in Sierra Leone has not only transformed the telecom sector but also enhanced consumer experiences through improved competition and lower costs,” Dalloul affirmed, highlighting Africell’s ongoing mission to positively impact the communities it serves while maintaining a respectful distance from government influence.

The retreat also featured remarks from Shadi Al-Gerjawi, Africell’s CEO, who expressed enthusiasm for the milestones the company aims to achieve in 2025. This year marks Africell’s 20th anniversary in Sierra Leone and 25 years of operations across Africa. “Our theme for 2025 will revolve around giving back to our subscribers,” he announced. “Throughout the year, we will implement various rewards for our subscribers, each month featuring a different theme to show our gratitude for their support over the past two decades.”

Al-Gerjawi also acknowledged the challenges faced in 2024, describing it as a tough year, but praised Africell’s resilience and commitment to high service standards. “We ensured our customers did not experience any service shortfalls during our network modernization. The upgrades were executed seamlessly, resulting in improved speed and capacity,” he noted, commending the efforts of the technical team.

As Africell approaches its 25th year of service in Africa, the company remains dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable telecommunications services. With a promising year ahead, Africell is poised to maintain its market leadership while delivering exceptional value to its customers and continuing its commitment to the Sierra Leonean community.

The indefinite barring of journalist Melvin Tejan Mansaray from Parliament raises critical questions about press freedom and accountability. While combating misinformation is essential, bypassing regulatory bodies like the IMC and SLAJ undermine due process.
Parliament's action risks silencing dissent and could deter robust journalism. Transparent engagement and institutional checks would ensure fairness.

Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa Dismissed for Misconduct!

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has dismissed the country's High Commissioner to South Africa, Ms. Mazuba Monze, following allegations of misconduct. The decision came after reports surfaced that Ms. Monze made an inappropriate request to a male staff member at the Zambian Mission in Pretoria.

According to reports, the High Commissioner asked the male staffer to shave her private parts, an unusual and unprofessional directive. When the staff member refused to comply, Ms. Monze allegedly labeled the refusal as disobedience and insubordination, leading to the staff member's dismissal.

The issue remained unresolved until the staff member appealed the decision, bringing the matter to the attention of Zambia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Following this appeal, President Hichilema decided to relieve Ms. Monze of her duties.

Another Empty Promise to Distract Sierra Leoneans

This is yet another hollow promise to the people of Sierra Leone. Claiming to one day make tertiary education affordable is both vague and deeply insulting to a population already suffering under a failing education system.

The so-called Free Quality Education (FQE), overseen by the Chief Minister during his tenure as Minister of Basic Education, has been nothing short of a disaster. It is plagued by overcrowded classrooms, unpaid teachers, inadequate learning materials, crumbling infrastructure, and rampant examination malpractice, with students openly using mobile phones during WASSCE exams. Thousands of students have even been deprived of the chance to sit for these exams due to poor planning and mismanagement.

How can we trust promises of affordable tertiary education when the foundation of the system is crumbling? "Radical inclusion" is nothing but a farce, with rural schools abandoned and urban schools overwhelmed beyond capacity.

Rather than distracting the public with vague future commitments, the Chief Minister should prioritize fixing the broken education system. Sierra Leoneans are tired of empty rhetoric; we demand genuine reform and tangible action, not more political distractions!

Renowned Journalist Thomas Dixon's Disappearance Sparks Concern Over Media Freedom

The recent reports surrounding the disappearance of prominent journalist Thomas Dixon have raised serious concerns about media freedom in Sierra Leone. If the claims are true that Dixon is either in hiding or detained due to a critical story about the Inspector General of Police, it signals a troubling regression in the country’s progress.

As renowned lawyer and human rights activist Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah Esq. stated, "It would appear that while the govt is repealing the criminal seditious libel laws with one hand, the police is using the other hand to repress journalists and send chills down their spines while they do their work as the fourth estate of government." He added, "Journalists should not be on the run because of their work. Journalists should not be locked up for writing even the most critical pieces against holders of public offices."

Despite the government repealing criminal libel laws, the actions of the police suggest a growing repression of journalists. This suppression sends a chilling message to the media, undermining their crucial role as the fourth estate.

Media freedom is not a privilege, but a cornerstone of democracy. While the country may face delays in addressing infrastructure and economic challenges, the protection of freedom of expression cannot be compromised. As Marrah emphasized, "Journalists are not criminals." It is imperative that the right of Thomas Dixon and all journalists-to operate freely in their profession is upheld.

27/12/2024

A Guinean opposition leader has been arrested and taken into custody for allegedly "insulting" the head of the military government in power since 2021, his lawyer and party told AFP on Friday.

Aliou Bah, who heads the Liberal Democratic Movement (MoDel), was arrested on Thursday as he travelled to neighboring Sierra Leone with two colleagues.

"Mr Bah is a real prisoner of conscience," lawyer Antoine Pepe Lamah said. "His only crime is criticism of the state in the face of the resurgence of kidnappings and forced disappearances."

Human rights groups also denounced his detention.

Bah's arrest is the latest in a crackdown on freedoms by the junta of General Mamady Doumbouya, who overthrew the civilian president Alpha Conde in a 2021 coup.

Since then, the regime has arrested or prosecuted a number of opposition figures or forced them to flee into exile.

Two opposition figures have been missing since they were arrested in July, while an ex-army chief of staff, the former number two of the junta and a doctor have died in unclear circumstances in recent months.

A journalist from the ‘Lerevelateur224’ website was arrested earlier this month by men in uniform in the suburbs of the capital, Conakry, and his whereabouts are unknown, his lawyers and a press union said.

Lifeline Nehemiah Supports October Flood Victims with Assorted Food Items

In a show of solidarity with the victims of the October 2024 flooding in Kuntorlor, Lifeline Nehemiah Projects (LNP), in collaboration with Lucy and David November, donated essential food items to help alleviate the suffering of those affected.

On Friday, 20th December 2024, the distribution took place at the LNP compound in Kuntorlor, Freetown. The donated items included bags of rice, onions, palm oil, vegetable cooking oil, and Maggie cubes.

The devastating floods, caused by torrential rains on October 24, 2024, resulted in widespread destruction in Kuntorlor, particularly affecting the range of hills surrounding the community. Many homes were destroyed, leaving hundreds of residents homeless.

Lifeline Nehemiah Projects’ Chief Executive Director, Prince Tommy Williams, explained the motivation behind the donation. He emphasized that the organization stands in full solidarity with the community, acknowledging that the impact of the floods extends far beyond physical damage, leaving families struggling with food insecurity and other essential needs. “Together, we are committed to providing assistance with rice, vegetable oil, palm oil, onions, and many more food items,” he said.

Mr. Williams stressed the importance of unity in times of global economic hardship, noting that their collective efforts are aimed at restoring hope and dignity to the affected residents. “Let us work hand in hand to rebuild lives and strengthen our community,” he appealed.

He further expressed concern about the victims' plight, noting that they had not only lost their homes but also their belongings, including bedding, cooking utensils, clothing, and cash. He urged everyone to avoid disaster-prone areas to minimize life-threatening risks, acknowledging that the resilience of the Kuntorlor community serves as an inspiration for all.

Chief Pa Alimammy Ssesay of Kuntorlor expressed gratitude for Lifeline’s ongoing support, sharing that the organization had convened a meeting with community leaders to discuss the next steps for helping the victims. He called on other organizations to follow Lifeline's example in assisting flood victims.

Councilor Abubakarr Sallu Kamara praised Lifeline Nehemiah Projects for their timely intervention. He described LNP’s presence as a “blessing in disguise” for the people of Kuntorlor, highlighting that this was their second intervention since the disaster occurred. He noted that, on the very day of the flooding, LNP had rushed to provide food for the affected families. The data collection process for identifying the victims was transparent, ensuring that the right individuals received the aid.

Councilor Kamara also urged residents to avoid building homes in disaster-prone areas to reduce future risks.

Flood victims, including Sheka A. Kamara, expressed deep gratitude to Lifeline for their support during this challenging time. Kamara shared that the flood had destroyed everything they owned, but the donated items would help them greatly as they navigate the festive season. He assured Lifeline that the items would be put to good use.

Another victim, Ramatu Sesay, also thanked Lifeline for their critical assistance. She explained that the floods had left her family with nothing, but the donation would help them gradually rebuild their lives. “Things are tough for us right now, but the food items from Lifeline will help us and our families slowly recover,” she said.

The residents of Kuntorlor expressed heartfelt thanks to Lifeline Nehemiah Projects for their compassion and generosity during this difficult time.
