A 4-Step Method for Overcoming Challenges
Want to try a technique for overcoming challenges that Buddha himself once taught? This four-step method could help you a lot!

Accept and Let Go: Accept where you are now and what you have. This is your life, at this time. While it’s temporary, accepting it will help you to let go of stress, anxiety, and fear. Meditation is one of the best ways to learn and practice acceptance.
Observe and Decide: When you face a particular challenge, take a step away from your feelings to make a plan. While it’s important to still feel your feelings, when deciding how to act, you want to be objective as possible.
Face Fears and Act: Taking action is one of the biggest steps in overcoming challenges. It’s likely that a big part of whatever you’re facing feels like a challenge because you have an underlying fear. Try to recognize and define what you fear in the situation. Then, you can act to mitigate that fear.
Practice Gratitude: Ultimately, we tend to exist in our comfort zones. So, when something new happens or is presented, we may feel like it’s hard to deal with. By practicing gratitude, you can reframe your definition of a challenge. You will also be more happy overall in your present moment.

The Bottom Line
Learning how to deal with challenges takes time, persistence, and a positive attitude. No matter your life situation, the hard times will happen. But, with the right mindset and practice, you will be able to overcome them everytime and grow in the process!

Life is full of its ups and downs. One day, you may feel like you have it all figured out. Then, in a moment’s notice, you’ve been thrown a curve ball. You’re not alone in these feelings. Everyone has to face their own set of challenges. Learning how to overcome challenges will help you stay centered and remain calm under pressure.

Everyone has their own preferences for how to face a challenge in life. However, there are a few good tips and tricks to follow when the going gets tough. Take your pick from the following list!

1. Make A Plan

While you don’t know what is going to happen in the future, you can always plan ahead. Look at the patterns in your life and see what challenges you’ve struggled with. Assess the optimal outcomes and make a plan for how you can achieve them.
If you work somewhere and can anticipate the types of challenges you may face, then you can plan ahead. This is the same for students in school. If a challenge is time management, then you can learn and plan for calendar management, for example.

2. Know You’re Not Alone

Every person in this world has their low points. Some may handle or even hide it better than others. But the truth is, whatever you are going through, there are others who have been through it too. You’re not alone. Try to reach out to your community and network. Speak your feelings and express your concerns in all settings of your life.

3. Ask For Help

You’re not alone, so you can find help. There’s no need to feel ashamed for asking for help. Whether you choose to rely on a loved one, a stranger, a mentor, or a friend, there are people who want to help you succeed.

4. Feel Your Feelings

By masking your feelings, they are not going to go away. Rather, feelings become trapped energy and can even have negative health consequences when they are ignored. Take some time to feel what you feel. This could come in the form of meditation. Or, if you’d rather write down what you feel, writing can be a therapeutic and cathartic experience.

When you feel and share your feelings, you may also be able to see your situation in a new light. This exercise could lead you to coming up with novel solutions and overcoming any challenge at hand.

5. Accept Support

Asking for help is only one side of the coin. On the other side of the coin, you have to be open and willing to accept support. People who come to your aid truly do care about you. Be open to receiving help when you need it.

6. Help Others

The old adage goes, “What you give is what you get.” If you’ve been through a situation or have advice for someone you know who is going through a tough time, be sure to help out! Helping others not only benefits them, but it can also help you feel happier yourself.

7. Think Big

It can be easy to let yourself think small because of the fear of failure, or even the fear of making a decision. But, to accomplish great things in life, you have to be open to taking risks. With whatever challenges may arise, always think and dream big. That way, you will achieve more than what you could have ever imagined. Try not to let your thoughts get in your own way.

8. Positive Mindset

What you think becomes your reality. Train your mind to think positively. This will take both time and practice. It begins with mental awareness. You can practice awareness through mindfulness techniques and meditation. When you get good at acknowledging your thoughts and letting them pass, you can stop negative thoughts in their tracks.

9. Don’t Give Up

When a challenge arises, be it a big test in school or an upcoming running race, don’t give up! Persistence is a huge key to overcome challenges. Giving up means that you will neither overcome the challenge nor learn from it. Power through challenges by asking for support, feeling your feelings, and making a plan to work through it.

10. Work Smart, Not Ha
Generally, there is more than one way to get something done. However, there’s always just one optimal way, or best way of doing it. To work smarter rather than harder, start by working backwards. Outline and define your goal. Then, plan the process for how to get there. Perform research to see how others who have come before you have done it. Take count of your own skills and ideas for how you may be able to do it better. Then, stick to your path and get to work!

"I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WOMEN BEING EQUALLY ACKNOWLEDGED AND THOUGHT OF AS CAPABLE AS MEN."

Shannyl discusses why feminism is important to her, and some ideas for a better future.

What does feminism mean to you as an individual in New Zealand Society?

Shannyl: To me feminism means being a part of the gender of females having equal rights towards freedom of speech and having equality in society alongside males. It’s about being able to fluctuate our voices and prove our capabilities as women. If I was to define feminism in one sentence I would say it is who I am, what I am, and how I am. Feminism is what makes the gender of females what we are and defines our uniqueness. But to me feminism also equally means addressing issues and achieving long terms solutions to such problems whilst creating a world where women are entitled to the same treatment as men.

Is it more than just equality between men and women? What about race or ethnicity?

Shannyl: Feminism is more then just men and women having equality between each other it’s about being able to share opinions together and interactive positively in our society. In my perspective I feel women and men of all ethnicities should have the right to speak their minds and create a platform for each other to stand upon and fight for equality. It’s about forming togetherness between the different races of our world in today’s day and time. I personally feel equality shouldn’t just exist on the basis of gender but we should fairly have equality in the structures of ethnicity and race. So I definitely agree that equality is more then just gender as we see various topics such as racism, sexism, and discrimination are causing a hierarchy to take place - categorizing people into particular demographics so it is necessary to expand our thoughts on feminism to a greater and complex level.

Why is it important to celebrate youth voices in our community?

Shannyl: Due to the voices of our youth being neglected as we are never taken seriously by adults I feel that due the generation I have been brought up in being more broad minded as well as having an open mind towards current crisis’s and issues taking place globally. It is important as the youth of today’s society we utilize our voices positively because we as a whole can enable our future generations to come together and enable change to occur. I also correspondingly feel that being a part of today’s youth in New Zealand we are the ones who can make our future generations feel extensively comfortable in their own skin and not have to change the way they are due to issues such as discrimination and racism existing based on ethnicity or race.

Do you think this can generate more development opportunities for youths and future generations?

Shannyl: Yes I personally consider utilizing the voices we have in society being a part of youth would effectively allow future generations to have opportunities to equally bring change and inclusiveness into society. It would also allow our youth groups to have a subjective to speak upon and significantly create fairness between women and men of all ethic groups. By us creating awareness we will be able to influence and educate children in a variety of different schooling systems as well to create platforms such as Shakti for their students as this will increase consciousness towards issues such as females not receiving equal rights alongside males in today’s society as well as facing sexism. It will also create awareness to linking issues such as discrimination and bullying towards different races.
What current issues are you hoping for Shakti’s Youth march to raise awareness for?

Shannyl: Considering issues such, as gender equality and the gender pay gap are currently a topic of controversy which is why I hope through the Youth march we as the Youth of society are able to create awareness by advocating for freedom to speak our minds as well as having equality within both the categories of gender and ethnicity. I hope that by us doing this march we are able to an extent decrease the amount of racism and discrimination which occurs in our society as 2017 statistics show that 14% of ethnicity groups which are of non-Māori descent face discrimination compared with 27% for Māori.* In terms of the gender pay gap 2016 statistics show that 12% of New Zealanders face the gender pay gap.* So I hope that through Shakti’s Youth march we are able to create awareness towards issues of this sort and give New Zealand society an insight into the true personalities of both women and men in New Zealand and their capabilities and in conjunction as youth enabling or attempting to decrease these rising statistics.

How are some ways we get this across to the general public? What roles can the wider community play in this?

Shannyl: Techniques or ways I feel we could possibly generate our message of preventing or extensively decreasing bullying and discrimination both based on gender and ethnicity publicly is by potentially creating more forms of youth centres as well as youth lines where people a part of the youth can speak up about issues upsetting them or issues that they feel are important to be heard. Another possible way we could influence the public through Shakti and also create a community where those being racially discriminate can feel comfortable is by creating possibly a debating group or something linked to a debating association where issues can be protested or spoken about similar to the Youth march taking place on the 4th of June.

How do you envision the future if your (youth) voices were more present?

Shannyl: I envision that through the future of our youth and the voices we have been privileged with we will be able to create a society where everyone is treated equally and women are correspondingly given respect alongside men. I also hope to see a change in the way people think towards the gender of females, as I would like to see women being equally acknowledged and thought of as capable as men. This being because I have experienced women being judged or questioned for opportunities such as education which I disapprove of as a female should be allowed to equivalently be rewarded with opportunities in high sufficient employment as well as educationally. So I significantly hope for a change in society’s insight and to change how society currently is which is racially discriminative towards a range of ethnicities.

We underestimated the COVID-19 crisis, it is now upon us. Our people are dying, it might be you or me next. Your Excellency, Mr President Sir family and friends are being turned away at hospitals because they do not have their COVID test results which are now mandatory, costing a whopping US$55 after being reduced from US$70 and are dying before their results become public, which takes 48 hours to be available.
Your leadership is NOW required, I am kindly requesting you to immediately appoint a natural leader as our Ministry of Health and commanding individual to be the Permanent Secretary, Chief Executive Officer of the said Ministry. As a Zimbabwean and a God-fearing Zimbabwean there is no better time to appreciate our medical professional than now and need our government to improve transparency and access to personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies such as test kits, ventilators, and related supplies. Hospitals and our medical institutions are struggling to access the needed PPE and medical supplies, with no clear explanation as to how supplies are being distributed.
We urge your office to immediately create provincial centralized structure to ensure the transparency, accountability, and coordinated means of allocating PPE and critical medical supplies, supported by an ICT inventory system. In addition, we urge our universities and research center to speed up the development and plan for the distribution of a possible vaccine, once one is created.
I am reliably informed that the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) developed a ventilator and there is resistance from those in the Health Service to test them, demanding that your office import tried and tested ventilators, yet we do not have the much-needed foreign currency. Surely Mr President, Sir how will we know whether these ventilators work without them being tested on patients. If you need any further details of the challenges that the developers are having I kindly request you to call Dr. Engineer Talon Garikayi +263776403559 from HIT.
Additionally, before our government considers relaxing social distancing measures to protect against recurrence of COVID-19 cases, our country needs to significantly expand diagnostic and antibody testing capacity which includes an essential public health infrastructure to support contact tracing, surveillance, epidemiology, laboratory capacity, workforce, and community partnerships. If we have the right policies in place our partner, the UN might provide flexible long-term and emergency supplemental funding to support in establishing the infrastructure needed to successfully implement population-wide testing and follow-up, a critical component to economic recovery across the country.
If you need any further explanation Your Excellency please do not hesitate to contact me on +263772278161.
Regards
Engineer Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi
