Maré Baixa by Nuno Andrade

On the south bank of the Tagus River, near Lisbon, there is a forgotten beach. For some, just a beach lost in time; for others the place where they struggle to survive. Those who inhabit this enclave lead lives on the margins of society. They have learned to live without being able to rely on anything and anyone, only on the tide - which always comes at the scheduled time...

Eclipse by Catarina Osório de Castro

"Between sea, sun and Gods, supernatural
movements impose their cyclical and
spontaneous orbits, like the heart that
beats every second, or the tides that rise
and fall continuously.
Under the moon, the lights turn on and off,
unquiet nature covers and uncovers, playing
with man, announcing that something
is going to be revealed."

Escavadora by Rita Lino

Outside of temporal and spatial limitations, Lino’s images create a dystopian underworld where the removal of human markers leaves only a landscape of rocks and shadows that encompasses the viewer and leaves visceral traces of melancholy and disturbance. For Lino, this exploration is a necessity, driven by visual curiosity instead of a search for catharsis. In the darkest of dark places, emotion does not exist, only action and self-preservation. The buried remain buried. There is no great discovery.” (Andy Pham)

Tiger (temporary title) by Florian Maricourt

Florian created this dummy as part of the residency program held by XYZ Books.

During his residency, Maricourt worked on his series called “Tiger” and made this dummy. The book is about Ying Qin, his neighbour, whom he photographed during the six years he spent in Les Lilas, Paris. He started photographing her by chance, and it was for fun that they continued, together, to write poems.

We are happy to welcome David Infante to our residency program here in Lisbon. He will spent one month with us editing his new project.

"My visual work emerges as a form of confrontation, resistance, and antithesis to the visual norms of contemporary times. My photography is based on experimental analog film and is guided by a constant search for referential elements in its origins, such as the photographic referent or the search for spaces that we experience that we call place."

Des Falaises, Du Vent by Zoé de Meulemeester

Available on our website !

When she cannot word her feelings, Zoé de Meulemeester expresses herself through images. When she is lost, she turns to women around her.

Accumulating images from every day and everywhere, these women appeared very clearly in her work. Their energy is intangible, fragile, and delicate. But it’s blowing in the wind, whistling along the cliffs and enveloping the artist with sorority.

This theater of nostalgia and melancholy finds its place in every moment, artwork or person that the photographer needed to capture. Taken by this creative urge when looking at something or someone beautiful, Des Falaise, Du Vent is a step towards her understanding of femininity – and more generally gender – that she struggles to grasp.

Dad, Pete, Opa by Tim J.Veling

The work was edited and produced via a process of collaboration to heighten a narrative that speaks not only of anticipatory grief but more importantly the mutual love, admiration, and acceptance between father and child. While deeply personal, it's a relatable story that serves to remind us that love and life endure within people who remain after someone’s passing.

Escavadora by Rita Lino

The body serves as a tool for exploration. In the caves and mines that she photographed, the body itself is the explorer, a machine plunging into the depths of places where vision is encumbered, where past and future become one endless tunnel with no light at the end. Outside of temporal and spatial limitations, Lino’s images create a dystopian underworld where the removal of human markers leaves only a landscape of rocks and shadows that encompasses the viewer and leaves visceral traces of melancholy and disturbance.

Back and Forth by Mariana Rocha .procha

Mariana Rocha has been producing autobiographical artistic work, mainly through photography. Using art as catharsis, she explores the self, her surroundings, and her relationship with others.

Back and Forth approaches the threshold between love and hate, making connections with family ties, new discoveries, grief, little burdens, and letting go.

Noon by Laura Sperl

A self-published book that Laura created during her residency at XYZ Books.

NOON is a visual and haptic experience of the passage of time and an invitation to be part of continuous change. The book consists of seven series of a mixture of photograms and chemigrams which resulted from experimentation with seawater and sand on photographic paper, exposed to sunlight. The analog images were not fixated and were left to change naturally over two weeks.

100 handmade copies were produced and are available on our website!

Tutti Frutti by Andrea Basileo .basileo

During the residency program, Andrea could bring together the large amount of images shot between 2015 and 2022 while being a volunteer at an inclusive holiday camp for children, and go through the editing process that led to the making of the book. The sequence is meant to give the point of view of the children, who seemed to Andrea, to have the most light-hearted approach towards diversities. He went there thinking he had to explain inclusion to children, then he found out they were already giving a beautiful example, by simply playing and enjoying the holiday time, without questioning the other one’s behavior.

Collaborating also with Max Pinckers made it possible to condense these feelings and ideas into a sequence of images of children experiencing joyful and wild freedom.

Ce qu'il Reste by Bénédicte Blondeau

Photography itself is often considered as the medium of the ephemeral. It shows us a moment that undeniably belongs to the past, reveals our passages in a constantly changing reality, like a scar recalling our memories: a metaphor of the fragility of human existence.

Matérias by Luísa Ferreira

A spontaneous performance in an abandoned industrial space. Iron, wood, sawdust, stairs, white sheet, objects, dust, light. The heat of summer and the humidity of the river turned everything into matter. The experience of the body in contact with iron, with wood shavings, the reunion, being there like a vo**ur, not provoking, letting it flow. A sweet slow dance.

Rato Tesoura Pi***la by Pedro Guimarães

“This is how we play together, how we pretend there is no such thing as the vast emptiness that keeps us apart during most days of our lives: 2500 km of land and water, to be precise, the sheer vastness of Europe. But most days is not all days of our lives, right?”

Alvalade by Frederico Clavarino

Alvalade today is a rather peaceful place, although quite a few things have changed. An airport was built next to it, and planes carrying mostly tourists land and depart every 4 or 5 minutes, flying low over people’s homes. The old apartments meant for the poor have increased in value, but are still too small to be interesting for the upper class, still lodged into the larger houses on the other side of Avenida de Roma. Teenagers meet here and there after school, in little clusters. There is green everywhere: trees, flowers, little gardens in between buildings.

How to Fly by Pedro Guimarães

LAST COPIES AVAILABLE

In ‘How to fly’ photographer Pedro Guimarães takes us on a poetic journey into the subculture of private aviation. The language he employs takes the disguise of the documentary genre yet what initially appears to be a flight manual quickly reveals Guimarães’ true autobiographical intentions through the use of poetic punctuation.

Dad, Pete, Opa by Tim J. Veling

D,P,O is a record of those last, precious months. The photographs are testament to not only the grief that father and son worked through together, but more importantly the love and admiration they shared; an account of the inevitable slowing of one life set to a backdrop of a new life and relationships thriving. Intensely moving in its unflinching intimacy and honesty, D,P,O reminds us that while death comes to us all, we must live in the present and treasure deeply the company of people we hold dear. For within those that remain, love and life endure.
