PORTUGAL GREATEST DECREASE IN NEW COVID-19 CASES IN EUROPE OVER 4 WEEKS (PERCENTAGE DECREASE)
PORTUGAL NEW CASES WEEKLY DECREASE - 22.7%, DEATHS -33.4%
FOUR WEEKS DECREASE PORTUGAL – 80.5% EUROPE (Increase) + 21.6%
In this edition of the COVID-19 WHO Weekly Epidemiological Update, for the week up to 16th March compared to 9th March it shows:
Europe new cases +6%
Global new cases +10%
Europe deaths -1%
Global deaths - 3%
According to WHO Report published on 16 March 2021 Portugal recorded 4,304 new Covid-19 cases in the week ending 14th March.
This compares with 5,568 the previous weeks report dated 9th March..
WEEKLY COMPARISON
This decrease in cases is 22.7% making it the second largest decrease in percentage terms in the 54 countries in the European area under the WHO category. The highest was Israel with - 69%.
Of the 54 countries, 35 had an increase in cases during the period 9th to 16th March and 16 had a decrease.
Countries who recorded increases above the European average (+6%) included: Hungary +34%, Bulgaria + 37.9%, Germany +17%, France +12%.
Of those who decreased were: UK -5.4%, Czechia -9.4%
4 WEEK COMPARISON
Over 4 weeks since 14th February cases have decreased in Portugal from 22,173 to 4,304 i.e. – 80.5%, compared to an increase of 21.6% for Europe as a whole. This is the largest in Europe. In second place behind Portugal is Israel with -78.3%. UK had a 58.3% decrease during this period and Spain - 64.1%.
Over this period weekly figures for several countries showed considerable increases compared with 4 weeks ago, namely: Cyprus and Azerbaijan which were 4 times higher, Norway and Bulgaria 3 times higher and Hungary 5 times higher. Greece increased by 88.3%, Italy grew by 80.9%, Germany by 36.6% and France by 26.3% during this period
Note: In the list of 54 countries 3 have been excluded as two continue with zero cases and one just 4 which cannot be compared in percentage terms.
