A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck Catanduanes, a province in the Bicol region of the Philippines, on April 4, 2023, at 08:54 PM local time. The quake's epicenter was located 120 kilometers south-southeast of Gigmoto, and had a depth of 9 kilometers.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was felt at various intensities across the region. The instrumentally measured intensities were as follows: Intensity IV in San Jorge, Samar, and Intensity II in Legazpi City, Legaspi, Albay, Daet, Camarines Norte, Sipocot, Iriga City, Pili, Camarines Sur, Kananga, Dulag, Abuyog, Leyte, San Roque, Northern Samar, Bulusan, and Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon. Meanwhile, the reported intensity in Palo, Leyte was II.
Additionally, PHIVOLCS reported that Intensity I was felt in several other areas, including Ragay, Pasacao, Camarines Sur, Quinapondan, Eastern Samar, Palo, Alangalang, Leyte, Monreal, Uson, Masbate, Gumaca, Polillo, Mauban, Guinayangan, Quezon, and Donsol, Sorsogon.
