Goldies Day 2024 Warms UPV-Iloilo City Campus

Nostalgia enveloped the UP Visayas-Iloilo City campus as jubilarians, alumni, teachers, and students of U.P. High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) gathered for the Goldies Day 2024 celebration on August 17.

Wearing their respective batch and UP t-shirts, UPHSI graduates filled the UPV Auditorium with smiles and stories while bonding over food and drinks sponsored by different classes.

In the afternoon, a parade was held around the campus, followed by the entrance of the attending classes who showcased their respective cheers and yells. Some of the alumni performed presentations before the flash mob and the disco.

A surprise dance number by the UPHSI teachers also energized the celebration's atmosphere.

Class 1999 bagged the award for the most number of attendees and Class 1984 clinched the title of Best Batch Presentation.

Jubilarians and non-jubilarians from Class 1964 to 2024 were also acknowledged on stage.

This year's celebration was organized by the UPHSI Batch 1999.

𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒓, 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆.

As Article III, Section 4 of the Philippine Constitution states “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, expression, or the press, or the right of the people peacebly to assemble and petition the government of a redress for grievances.”

Each and every one of us deserves to know, express, and speak. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right, and so is the protection of all press works and obligations, where governments around the globe has to guarantee for its citizens. The public press should be protected for its citizens, with all matters regarding processes in news gathering and distribution.

With this exchange of expressions and ideas, the practice of democracy will be safeguarded and a democratic country, like the Philippines to have a healthy discussion where the nation can thrive in the public’s hands. The world should owe it to the people to know what is happening, and to let each perspective have its own spotlight—which we do through the press. That way, we can take the best course of action and demand accountability.

UPHSI USBONG ME rockets to int’l space R&D challenge finals

Team Pilipinas, represent!

The USBONG ME team of the UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) emerged as this year’s Philippine representative to the finals of the Space for Planet Earth Challenge 2024. The show and tell, and final pitch segments of the competition were held last March 15 via online conference platforms. The UPHSI team competed against their high school counterparts, one team each from Australia and New Zealand.

SpaceBase, the international organization that organizes this research and development (R&D) aimed at providing viable platforms for young innovators, touted this event’s goal of using “space technologies to find new and innovative solutions to address climate change issues in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands”.

Grade 10 junior high school students, Jerrell Empedrad, Khrystel Angela Espinas, Krizia Armonio Gacayan, Kim Jillian Gestopa, Daniel Herradura, Maerence Joy Pinongcos and Precious Angel Selorio comprised USBONG ME (Unified Students By Observing National Global Methane Emissions). They were the brains and the grit behind an innovative environmentally grounded project, Integrating Satellite Data for Aerial Surveillance: Simulating Drone-Sensor Synergy in Mapping and Quantifying Subtle Methane Emissions in Rice Paddies.

The USBONG ME team’s proposed innovation incorporated satellite data with ground-based and aerial data to pinpoint hotspots of methane emissions in rice paddies consequently developing a 2D mapping of the satellite data and methane emissions obtained. While these readings may seem tiny, these can actually form part and enrich the current data set that agricultural researchers and technicians use in their various R&D initiatives for our local farmers. The same data is also important for climate change related projects focusing on greenhouse gas emissions

Despite resources and logistics setbacks, the team persisted and they attributed their feat largely to the STEM education and research mentorship and support they received from UPHSI that emphasizes studies and innovation grounded on the daily realities and challenges of the society’s basic sectors. Engr. Vicente Armones IV and Dr. Donne Jone Sodusta are the team’s mentors and fieldwork supervisors.

SpaceBase will award NZD 1,000.00 to the team for reaching the finals as the high school category finals representative of the Philippines.

Another team, Project AIM from Rizal Technological University, Caraga State University, and Adamson University also represented the Philippines in the university and start-up category.
