For this year’s 49th pre-Independence celebrations, the Waterhouse Memorial Primary School in the Kombiu LLG of Rabaul district, East New Britain Province, is hoping to instil the values of being independent in its 700 students from grades 2-6.
The school started its program this morning with the Grade 2s dancing to the gospel song, “Joy Overflow”, then the Grade 3s with their tambourine performance.

A ban on the sale of alcohol has been imposed in Morobe Province from Friday, September 13 to Tuesday, September 17.
The Morobe Provincial Administration has confirmed that the ban will be lifted on Tuesday.
“This is to ensure that our people celebrate in the true spirit of independence without fear of threats or intimidation,” this newsroom was told.

As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate another year of independence, Police Station Commander of Vanimo, Inspector Kevin Hembehoie has issued a call for heightened awareness and responsibility during the festivities.

The internationally acclaimed band Naked Koala, best known for their hit song "Right with Me", has arrived in Port Moresby ahead of their highly anticipated performance at the PapaGraun Annual Music Festival.
Originally formed in Norway as a DJ music production duo, Naked Koala transitioned into a full band a few years ago to pursue their dream of live performances.
Lead vocalist Kyrre shared that they decided to step away from DJ production to follow their original dream of having a proper band.
The group is excited to take the stage alongside talented local Papua New Guinean artists, promising a vibrant fusion of local rhythms and international sounds.
The festival is set for Saturday, 14th September 2024, at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, with gates to be opened from 8 AM to 5 PM.
As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its 49th Independence Day on September 16th, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop reflected on the nation's remarkable journey of self-determination, resilience, and unity.

Established in 1957, when PNG was still a territory of Australia, St John began by providing first aid training and quickly grew into a critical ambulance service.

A week-long sports tournament is underway in Morobe’s Nawaeb district as a precursor to PNG’s Independence celebrations.
The soccer tournament, which started on Monday, September 9th, was organised by the Unity Youths Congregation from Dingsu village, in Wawin.
Twenty men’s teams and seven women’s teams have registered and are taking part in the soccer tournament.

Wests Tigers skipper and Fiji cult hero, Api Koroisau will miss the Pacific Championships after being banned for three matches for a Dangerous Throw during his side's loss to the Eels.
Koroisau's tackle on Clint Gutherson in the 52nd minute at Campbelltown Sports Stadium was assessed as a Grade 2 and as this was his second offence, it carried a three-game ban with an early guilty plea.

Quick response by employees of Ramu NiCo at Basamuk Refinery saved a 62-year-old man who received severe knife wounds.
The 62-year-old man had sustained multiple knife wounds and was in critical condition. The policemen swiftly transported him to the refinery clinic, where Chinese and PNG doctors worked together to provide professional and timely medical treatment for the elderly man.

The Commission of Inquiry into the January 10th riots which also cover the Royal PNG Constabulary was told that the air wing of RPNGC lacked specialists to occupy positions that have been left vacant since the establishment of the wing’s structure in 1998.
Acting Director of the unit, Inspector Sharma Kwarahasi said about 12 positions were created and out of those positions, only four are occupied.

Police Station Commander for Banz in Jiwaka Province, Inspector James Rumi has been suspended for 21 days from performing his official duties effective September 02, 2024, over allegations of misconduct and attacking PMV passengers.
Provincial Police Commander (PPPC), Chief Inspector Albert Korin said the PSC was suspended from office for the police internal investigation unit to conduct investigations into his alleged misconduct and to ascertain factual information.

A marriage counselling course called ‘Time Out for Marriage’ concluded on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with 15 couples legalising their customary marriages at Tokarara Christian Fellowship (TCF) on Koura Way.

Member for Tari Pori and Prime Minister, James Marape has retained his seat as the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea after a motion of vote of no confidence against him was defeated in parliament this morning.
A total of 75 MPs showed confidence in James Marape, voting against the motion while 32 from the Opposition voted for it.
Prior to the Speaker entertaining the motion, the Opposition MPs argued about him not entertaining a debate before the vote.
However, Speaker Job Pomat as advised from the clerks explained that the motion when first submitted had a seconder who seconded it and there is no need for a new seconder and didn’t allow for a mover of the motion.
Pomat then called for a vote and entertained the motion which saw 75 MPs showing confidence in the current Prime Minister, voting him to continue as Prime Minister of the country.

70 MPs in government already in the chamber, awaiting members of the Opposition.
Government MPs have entered the Chamber with confidence to vote against the Vote of No confidence motion.
Parliament will resume this morning to deliberate on the motion of the Vote of No confidence against Prime Minister James Marape.
The motion was filed last week by the Opposition. After getting a green light from the Private Business Committee, the motion was listed in the Notice Paper then adjourned for seven days. At a press conference yesterday afternoon, coalition partners showed their support to the Prime Minister and pledged to vote against the motion.
Also last night, the Prime Minister released a statement confirming the number of MPs in the Government as 77 while the Opposition claims to have 35.
