12/09/2024

Member for Tari Pori and Prime Minister, James Marape has retained his seat as the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea after a motion of vote of no confidence against him was defeated in parliament this morning.

A total of 75 MPs showed confidence in James Marape, voting against the motion while 32 from the Opposition voted for it.

Prior to the Speaker entertaining the motion, the Opposition MPs argued about him not entertaining a debate before the vote.

However, Speaker Job Pomat as advised from the clerks explained that the motion when first submitted had a seconder who seconded it and there is no need for a new seconder and didn’t allow for a mover of the motion.

Pomat then called for a vote and entertained the motion which saw 75 MPs showing confidence in the current Prime Minister, voting him to continue as Prime Minister of the country.
