Just got back from the most amazing 11 days in Morobe! We can't thank them enough for the hospitality. It's crazy to think that this was the longest we've been in Lae. All thanks to Gangles, we get to witness a 139kg Marlin being pulled in. What a hilarious story! This experience was definitely one for the books. Now, on to the next adventure! 🌟🎣

Liklik stori taim 💆🏽‍♂️

We were fortunate to visit Malol, a group of villages about 1km inland from Sissano Lagoon, Aitape. This trip was made possible by my good mentor, chief Daniel Affar Leki.

The Malol traditional way of welcoming visitors into their village is quite distinct from the rest of Papua New Guinea. Men and women would sing while performing the fire dance which involves striking you with burning limbum (palm tree leaves) for about 100 meters into the village 🔥😅

We heard rumours about the welcoming ceremony while planning our Malol trip in Aitape town, but we took it lightly and joked about it until we had to face it ourselves. Typically, we joked about it, thinking it would be simple to get around until the thought of reality hit us halfway through while dodging burning limbum leaves and smelling burnt hair on our skin (liklik laugh, bikpla skin pen) lol 🥲... chief DL also received his fair share of dodging and being burnt 🤦🏽‍♂️

We were then invited into their Haus Tambaran (traditional ancestral meeting house) for a formal welcome by the village chief, elders, and local church leaders after we finally reached the main village. It was a humble experience to see the entire village come to a halt just to welcome us as guests to the village. Following the ceremony, we were served a large amount of food as we feasted and chuckled as they joked about how each of us displayed amazing acrobatic skills dodging our way through trying to avoid the burning limbums 🤸🏽

It was a fantastic experience that would not have been possible without the network we have established and the good friendships we have formed with people we’ve crossed path with. We consider ourselves fortunate to have experienced such a raw and unique culture that is still in existence today, and we highly recommend visiting Malol and the sister villages along the coast of Sissano Lagoon the next time you visit Aitape 🌿

We had a fantastic time onboard Cabolero as we set out for fishing off the coast of Karkar Island, Madang. Believe me, Madang waters are teeming with large fish. Here’s the team flexing a 90kg beauty during one of our catches.

We had the privilege of flying our drone over the mighty Sissano lagoon; from the air, you could see the regrowth of new vegetation after the devastating tsunami that tragically took over 3,000 lives 24 years ago on a fateful Friday eve.

Getting into the lagoon by boat was an adventure and an unforgettable experience. To get through the water inlet, you need an experienced skipper to avoid the three-plus-meter waves rushing through one after the other. We made it through safely, but a few splashes along the way soaked us.

The lagoon itself is an important food source for the local villagers as you would see men, women and children fish along the waterways while greeting every visitor with their beaming smiles.

A group of kids followed us from village to village, curious about what a drone is and how it works. We took the time to explain because it's not every day that you get to share your passion with kids from the most remote parts of the country who are completely focused on learning more about technology.

It was an honor and a wonderful experience to mingle with the locals and appreciate how beautiful the simple Sissano way of life is.
