Flash-trax.com NZ single and video reviews and reminiscences from the music industry in general. It could be a world famous global smash, or a smaller, one-time hit.

Flash-trax.com owner and managing director Jack has been a pro musician for over 20 years. In this time he's recorded and released work, managed acts to international success, organised nationwide and international tours, and successfully ran an independent label for 8 years. Jack has been a reviewer and interviewer for some time and with his friends MusicNZ making the difficult decision to withdr

aw from reviewing promotional single and video releases from 1st July 2023, Jack decided to take up the mantle and do it instead. Additional to this, Jack is running a blog called From The Vault, which features a song that's made a mark on Jack's life at some point. He'll briefly chat about it, you may see a brief chat with someone from the band itself, and then the video will play.

You know something? There is a really underrated musical instrument that provides the lead instrumentation for Rapper PNC's newest single from his Unbothered Rapper project, titled We On. I refer to the Xylophone. This track, produced by PNC's long time colleague and buddy 41, gives us a quality lesson in how this instrument can be applied to give a surprisingly haunting, melancholic texture....

Johnny and the gang are back, and they are not taking the foot off the accelerator. Nope. No way Jose. Underwire's new single Greener is yet another example of why I am a huge fan of these Wellington Punk rocker/psychobillies. Released onto Spotify and all other platforms on 20th September, Greener is a track that's written to hold an X-Ray up to the BS of emissions trading schemes in place of actual environmental and climate change action; and the greenwashing we're seeing from the corporate world to such an extent that the term "greenwashing" has actually become part of everyone's lexicon....

Normally I would add a retrospective vid review to the single I'd reviewed earlier. This one I decided to do a stand-alone vid review, because it's gorgeous. Rowdy's Rose and Rosie and Blair Shaw, and the single was released a few short months ago. The review for it is elsewhere on this site, so go look at what I said there about the recorded work....

Auckland Country singer Kayla Rose (grand-daughter of the late, great Rusty Greaves, and niece to the late, great Kevin Greaves) brings us the follow up single to her recent release Drinks, the eponymously named for the parallel released EP, Dear Little Me. We have here a classis Country track. We've got the mild, slightly below mid-range tempo anchored together with a chocolatey bass line intertwined for maximum glide....

One of my favourite Kiwi guitarists from one of my favourite Aotearoa regions is Courtnay Low, leader and vocalist for Courtnay & The Unholy Reverie. The band is dropping its EP Mercy on Friday 11th October (or October 11th if you're American), and holy mother of pearl, the focus single and EP are absolutely breath-taking. Focus single for radio airplay is the track…...

From the newly announced re-release of THE UNDERWATERMELON MAN AND OTHER UNREASONABLE RHYMES on 1st November, we're given the late, great Kiwi comedian John Clarke's performance of The Hide And Seeky Bird. Naturally, as a quirky project we're going to feel the vibe of the comedian's delivery and tone. It pops us along jovially as we watch the rather fun YouTube video, a still from which is the graphic for the release as well as for this review....

Ocean Beach is releasing a new single every first day of the month. So far, thanks to using a previous laptop that would not look out of place as a prop in a steampunk movie, I missed September's release - but I will retrospectively review that one. I love their 1st October release, Be Together. This single has one of those emotive, bittersweet melodies that you can't stop listening to once the track kicks off....

Hawkes Bay's alt-rockers Say Or Do return with new single Take My Hand, due for release on the platforms on 11th October. It's the appetiser for their forthcoming EP, due in early 2025. They definitely stay true to their self-described genre blend of alt-rock energy and skate-punk with this track. Vocally astute with a pop-punky melody, we have some razzing rhythm guitars, laden with fuzz, that are going to get the sweat flicking off heads in the front rows across Aotearoa....

We’re thrilled to announce the release of our new EP Over Oceans on October 11. Great to hear from the awesome and versatile Swerve City! These guys are bringing us a new EP launch soon, which you'll see noted elsewhere on this site. From it I am reviewing focus single Avalanche. We start off with a nicely up-tempo (but not frenetically so) driving some great guitar picking. Anchored by a bassline that's straight out of the text book of how to bass like a bad-ass, we get the intent immediately....

I find myself often saying "I love this band" or "I'm a big fan of that band". Well now, Auckland pop singer Bex returns with a new direction combining some surprising genres into a blend that certainly retains the entertainment factor she's been synonymous with to date.
