The Ordinary Kiwi Project Inspirational stories from everyday Aotearoa.

Our goal is to spread positivity in the online space by using ordinary 'Kiwis' (New Zealanders) as subjects to tell different stories.

Turns out it's been a while between videos as I've been growing my own little Ordinary Kiwi 🥝👀

As we're getting back to exploring, I'm starting to look for my next Ordinary Kiwi for an upcoming video project. Someone who's taking on a challenge, overcoming a fear or just being a badass out in their community.

Reach out if that person is you or someone that you know. The Ordinary Kiwi Project is about injecting positive stories into people's social media voids - help me tell someone's story because you never know who that might end up inspiring!

While most people catch up with their friends over a beer or a movie, a group of my mates decided that we'd try to walk 60kms in a day instead. Totally normal right?

While most of us know Movember New Zealand for people growing epic moustaches, we instead embarked on the challenge to instead walk 60kms. You're supposed to run/walk it over the course of a month, but we decided to do it in just one day.

Why 60? Worldwide, we lose 60 men to su***de every hour.

But with zero training under our belts, could a bunch of ordinary kiwi's actually walk the equivalent of a ultra marathon?

Finally back editing another video. This time, a narrated story recounting the time myself and a group of friends attempted to walk 60km in one day for Movember

With covid preventing me from telling stories of others for the mean time, it's the best time to turn the lens on myself to see what my own ordinary kiwi self can achieve 🥝

Continuing the theme of International Women's Day, here's a fun video showing you the power of surrounding yourself with women who inspire and enable you to live out your passion projects.

Lauren not only agreed to put herself in an uncomfortable position of spending a day talking to strangers but helped to shoot an introduction to a video that never actually made it onto the finished piece because we didn't want to come across as "YouTubers". It gave me the confidence to create the video I had imagined in my head, without the support it would have still been an idea scribbled in a notebook.

Find people who support and encourage you to achieve whatever the hell it is you desire 🔥

How does it make you feel imagining a woman attempting to swim 70 lengths of a pool? How does it make you feel if that person was doing it for her 70th birthday?

It's so important to share stories of people challenging the perceived idea of 'normal'. It helps to break down gender stereotyping and inspire and motivate others to achieve their own personal goals.

This was my first ever attempt at producing a video entirely from scratch so is a combination of working through my own doubts and fears while filming someone else go through theirs.

Age is just a number and Liz sets out to prove this by setting herself a milestone birthday challenge that is more than just throwing another birthday party....

Just before Christmas, we took to the streets of Christchurch to ask strangers "What did you learn in 2021?".

Armed with nothing but a cardboard sign, a camera and a microphone we had no idea if anyone would even want to stop and chat. This is the insightful and hilarious result of what happened 😍

In December 2021, after another weird year of COVID lockdowns, we took to the streets of Christchurch, New Zealand to ask strangers what they had learned in ...

Todays Ordinary Kiwi that is doing stuff I bet you haven't heard of...

Rob Hutchings is a guy who doesn't listen when people tell him things cannot be done. Especially if that thing is swimming the length of the Clutha river.

Yep, that's right, this Christchurch based adventure lover is the first known person to ever swim the 256km Clutha river, from Wanaka to the Pacific. Spoiler alert... it turns out it was possible but only because he backed himself.

He's done a tonne of other really amazing adventure swims including crossing Lake Tekapo, Lake Brunner, Buller River (twice!) and Akaroa Harbour.

You can support this local badass by following him as he dreams up his next adventure http://adventuresoutsidethelanes.com
He has self published a book "Downriver Nomad" which includes his journey from learning to swim to being the self-driven adventure swimmer he is today. It's a book about facing adversity and literally shows you what is possible on the other side of hardship.

Liz was looking to do something to mark her 70th birthday and what better way to celebrate than doing 70 lengths of a swimming pool! From starting at being too scared to go in the deep end, was this something she was even able to achieve??
