Today Aotearoa popstar Jason Parker marks his seismic return to music with the release of his electrifying single ‘Crash,’ a track that entrances while it devastates, glistens while it shatters.
Through his fearlessness and agency as a songwriter, Parker has become a magician at harnessing the power of pop to embrace darkness while simultaneously offering a cathartic release.
“A crash is sudden and so was the breakup that inspired this song. Sharp and unexpected,” says Parker on the inspiration of the track. “I think the line that sums up the themes of ‘Crash’ best is “I feel like a dead man walking.” A reminder that no matter how shocked you’re feeling, life just keeps going.”
Produced by Maude Minnie Morris, ‘Crash’ showcases both artists’ ability to stir the souls of listeners while weaving dramatic pop tapestries that stay with the audience long after the song ends. “Working with Maude has been an incredibly fulfilling experience,” says Parker. “I feel like we were destined to meet and make this record together.”
Adding to the allure of ‘Crash’ is the stunning music video shot in the alleyways of Osaka, Japan with Daisy Thor-Poet of Tinted Productions. “It was a full day of running around the streets of Osaka singing in alleyways and train stations. I literally started the day dying my hair in a hostel bath room and ended it at the biggest sushi train I’d ever seen. The whole day was really a popstar fantasy moment.”
This is not the first time Parker and Thor-Poet have worked together, winning Best Music Video at the New Zealand Youth Film Awards for Parker’s track ‘This Is My Year.’
‘Crash’ marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Parker as the first track off his upcoming EP, Fairy Bread. “The idea of Fairy Bread really is about taking something and making it better. Coming from darkness to light.”
‘Crash’ releases today, April 12th via Aotearoa New Zealand independent label Bigp
OUT NOW! Haz & Miloux release their sophomore EP Brunette, and single ‘March 12’, with a gorgeous music video directed by CHAII 🌹✨
‘March 12’ is described by Miloux as “a letter to my younger self, a reassurance that pain or trauma doesn't have to dictate the rest of your life. It's ok that it might have held you back for a little while and to feel and acknowledge pain is not a weakness but a strength. Pain from the past doesn’t have to stop you from trusting or loving again. There's no shame in taking your time to heal.”
The talented and creative @chaii_music directed the 'March 12' music video, and Miloux describes the shoot as “an amazing experience as we had the best tight knit crew. It was shot over three days in heavy rain from Waiheke to Piha. Mona brought her vision to life beautifully with award-winning cinematographer Taine Noble. She captured the feeling of isolation contained within the lyrics, as well as the beauty, stillness and peace of acceptance in the song.”
Along with the music video, ‘March 12’ ushers in Haz & Miloux's second EP Brunette. The pair describe the EP as a collection of songs written about daily life as artists. It is a window into that time of their lives.
“We've been sitting on this EP for a very long time,” says Miloux. “It feels good to finally send it out into the world. We're in a new phase of creating and are ready to share and perform this collection of songs with an extra level of introspection.”
And the title? “I was blonde and now I'm brunette again,” Miloux laughs. “This EP is a reflection of this phase of our lives since our first EP, Blonde, and is a bit more natural and a return to our roots, musically."
Brunette follows the 2019 release of EP Blonde. The pair achieved phenomenal success with their debut EP, winning the 2020 Aotearoa Music Award for Best Soul/RnB Artist, and Blonde was shortlisted for the 2020 Silver Scroll Awards. Their songs are love letters to their
