In our cover story, Sherry Zhang explores one of the most misunderstood and controversial areas of New Zealand’s criminal law, the defence of insanity. With our current system no longer aligned to those in other countries, Zhang argues it may be time for change.

“And as Stephen King-esque news headlines capitalise off the ‘psycho killer’ trope, running wild with demonising and salacious representations of those struggling with severe mental illness, what role does our justice system play in the very real tragic losses that occur in our communities?”

Last month, North & South investigated how New Zealand’s 19th and 20th-century education system deliberately steered Māori students towards low-skill, low-paid employment. Is this still the case today? Aaron Smale’s part two of a three part investigation can be found in our latest issue, on sale now for a limited time only!

Given a little time and space, some threatened insect species can bounce back. In our May issue, we have an excerpt from Lily Duval’s new book Six-Legged Ghosts. Duval explains that the Cromwell chafer beetle is something of a celebrity among entomologists as the first invertebrate in the world to have a reserve created for its protection.

“As the town of Cromwell grew, the uncharismatic inland dunes gave way to houses, lifestyle blocks and businesses. On the northern edge of town, a nine-hole golf course doubled in size, swallowing one population of the beetle as the site was transformed into manicured greens. By the late 1970s the beetle was left with just one fifth (100 hectares) of its natural range.”

Stuart McKenzie and Miranda Harcourt’s new play Transmission: Beta tells the tale of the government’s Covid-19 response — the economic and political fallout — through the words of those perched on the frontline. McKenzie and Harcourt talk to North & South in our May issue about taking the nation’s temperature at this time of unprecedented disharmony.

“We’re not trying to take a position,” says McKenzie. “We’re not trying to say, ‘Once you’ve seen the play you will go away knowing what was right and what was wrong’. It is a drama where you get to understand the perspectives of different characters, and you become familiar with them on a human level.”

Almost all of our electronics end up in landfill, and e-waste recycling is largely user-pays. We know the right thing to do with our broken phone is to take it to a resource recovery centre, but the cost and inconvenience makes it hard to reconcile.

In our May issue, George Driver writes on the fascinating campaigns for shorter drives to full-funded e-waste recycling centres. Grab your copy now from any good magazine retailer!

In our May issue, we take a closer look at the mouth – check out our history of the toothbrush, and we learn how a healthy oral microbiome promotes healthy, happy teeth.

From ‘A brush with history’: “Dental historians date the first toothbrush with bristles to China’s Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE). Surviving examples have a bone or bamboo handle. The Chinese would drill holes into these handles to insert hog hair. Travellers brought these toothbrushes to Europe, although Europeans preferred softer horse hair.”

From ‘Good health starts in the mouth’: “Even on properly brushed and flossed teeth, the bad bacteria that causes tooth and gum issues can find hiding places…BLIS K12® and BLIS M18®, two oral probiotics, work by populating your mouth with a host of healthy bacteria, crowding out and inhibiting the bad bacteria which can lead to infection.”

North & South May is a special issue on the state of our health system. At some time or another every one of us will be in hospital – most of us are born there, some of us die there – but the system is straining at the seams to support our population.

Read Theo Macdonald’s interview with Stuart McKenzie and Miranda Harcourt on their new play about the government’s Covid-19 response; Jeremy Rose needles the new Minister of Health, Dr Shane Reti; Carl Shuker on the devastating effect of lockdown on mental health; David Galler writes a touching tale of organ donation and its life-changing impact; Airini Beautrais explains how a struggling health sector and a struggling education sector go hand-in-hand; and Sylvia Giles compares her guilty pleasure M*A*S*H to her own experience in health care.

He’s the first Māori minister of health in nearly 99 years, but it took Dr Shane Reti fewer than 99 days to scrap Te Aka Whai Ora Māori Health Authority, which Māori health advocates spent years fighting for. In our cover story, Jeremy Rose talks to Reti about his first few months in the role and his priorities for the future.

“It’s tempting to see Reti, a former territorial, as a reluctant general in a cultural war not of his making. Like an Antipodean field marshal at Gallipoli, he has little choice but to battle on, declaring it a war to end all wars while knowing that in truth it’s an endless battle causing pointless carnage with no clear objectives.”

In our April issue, we look into the cryptids of New Zealand – from the Moehau Man to moose, copperhead snakes to Southland otters – there’s a host of irresistible tales to tickle the imagination.

The Canterbury panther is one of our most widely believed legends and the tale began in 1915 when a cargo ship loaded with exotic animals bound for Australia experienced a cage failure. A pregnant female puma escaped and was last seen running towards the Port Hills. For more than a century, there have been sightings of labrador-sized black cats around Canterbury and it’s not all hearsay; large cat prints were found on Pines Beach, and there’s plenty of photographic evidence of large felines. If they are not panthers, then feral cats are getting a bit too big for our liking – in the documentary Prints of Darkness, one interviewee says “it was an Arnold Schwarzenegger of a cat.”

On 10 April 1968, during one of the worst storms in recorded New Zealand history, the Lyttelton-Wellington passenger ferry Wahine foundered in the shallow waters of Wellington Harbour. Fifty-one people died during the ship’s panicked evacuation from drowning, exposure and colliding against the rocks. In our April issue, Blenheim local Peter Jerram tells the story of the Lincoln College cricket team’s horrifying experiences that day.

“No one had heard of counselling in 1968,” Jerram remembers. The team went home from the disaster, “all of us traumatised in one way or another.”

Language like “the cloud” works well at disguising the vast network of cables and warehouses stuffed with servers using an eye-watering amount of energy to keep apps and websites running.

In our April Issue, Paris Marx writes on the energy demands of artificial intelligence – “A recent report from the International Energy Agency estimates that the global energy demand of data centres, AI, and crypto could more than double by 2026, increasing from 460 TWh in 2022 to up to 1,050 TWh — similar to the energy consumption of Japan.” Read the full article by picking up April today from any magazine retailer.

With approximately 40 per cent of the Māori population being under the age of 18, New Zealand’s future workforce is going to increasingly be brown. But is our education system stuck in a past of low expectations for Māori students that threatens the country’s future prosperity? Aaron Smale reports in our April issue, in part one of a three part series.
