Escalating over 23 days, what was initially billed as a peaceful protest on the grounds of parliament ended with fiery clashes between protesters and police earlier this month. Documentary photographer Cameron James McLaren took his camera to Wellington for the occupation’s first days, and again at the bitter end. A prickly tale: “A 38-year-old Auckland woman, an avid seller on TradeMe, was sentenced to 100 hours of community work for attempting to smuggle rare and endangered plants into New Zealand. On her way home from China, she strapped 947 cacti and succulents in stockings on to her body. When a detector dog at Auckland Airport caught on, she fled to the men’s room trying unsuccessfully to dispose of the illegal plant matter. In a separate incident some months later, the same woman failed to sneak 142 unauthorized seeds and 200 plant pots past the airport’s biosecurity.”
