Letter to the Editor: Recent Waitemat Local Board workshop about the proposed AT cycleways

Having just listened in online to the recent Local Board workshop about the proposed AT cycleways on Jervois Road and Ponsonby Rd, I think it is appropriate to share with your readers the following:

The City Vision members of the local board (including Genevieve Sage naturally) are not listening to their community.

Genevieve Sage effectively rubber stamped the whole idiot project by setting up an “endorsement” meeting, rather than a discussion with the community?

The AT representatives were not seeking input - they were telling the board what they were doing.

AT’s “community engagement” is a sick joke! They apparently have an online tool that allows interested parties to comment on the plans – BUT no one knows about it – and it is very hard to find!

Why is this not promoted through advertising in Ponsonby News – that way everyone would have access to it. AT do not want or welcome any input that does not just endorse their ridiculous ideas.

The local community through which these cycleways are proposed are not cyclists and never will be…. Cyclist numbers remain at just 1% - after many years and a wasted spend over a billion dollars on cycleways.

The target of 17% of commuters was the agreed achievable outcome. So that represents a 100% fail by AT – again!

AT are ruining our local community environment with unused cycleways on major thoroughfares (when side roads are both safer and cheaper) to satisfy their woke ideals and are ignoring the needs and wants of the ratepayers and residents.

This clearly demonstrates that neither AT nor the local City Vision Board members (including Genevieve Sage) are not understanding or accepting that at the last election the entire political landscape has shifted.

It shifted away from the left spending all our hard-earned money on idealistic projects that keep them in jobs, and now focusses on data driven justification for spending of public money – on projects that improve our lives, not disrupt them.

This local board and its left leaning and ideologically driven board members have run their course.

It is time for Richard Northey to retire (he’s only making up numbers and taking a salary anyway), and Genevieve Sage, of course must go, after her duplicitous action last election of running as C & R and then immediately selling her political soul for the chairmanship of the Board so long as she supports left wing madness proposed by Richard Northey and his acolytes.

The next local body election cannot come soon enough.

PS. Hat’s off to Greg Moyle and Sarah Trotman for talking sense and asking the obvious but clearly much needed questions! NB: AT did not answer their questions as Genevieve Sage shut down the discussion – That’s City Vision’s version of democracy!

Letter to the Editor & Simeon Brown

Please endear yourself to every Aucklander by stopping Auckland Transport (AT) from ruining Great North Rd (GNR) as they propose doing - for NO VALID reason.

AT intend wasting at least $28,000,000 by "improving" GNR!

The road is functioning perfectly well as it is! It needs NO additional work at all.

As AT themselves admit there are just 16 "fender benders" a year on average so AT's catch all saying of "safety" cannot possibly justify wasting our hard-earned money on something that doesn't need fixing - because it ain't broke!

If you review the latest AT disaster at Meola Rd and understand that despite public concerns and a total lack of support (except AT funded lobby group Bike Auckland), AT wasted $28,000,000 making Meola Rd SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE than it ever was before.

AT have ruined one major thoroughfare Meola Rd) and will do the same to GNR unless you personally step in Minister and tell them to stop - & THEN try to explain to you why they think $28,000,000 on a road that works perfectly well already, needs ANY work at all?

AT are hopelessly out of control Minister & this bizarre situation (highlighted in the attached propaganda from AT) must be stopped and questions asked by government of the "bureaucratic elite" who are ruining Auckland and wasting our money.

Please tell Auckland Transport to stop this ruinous project! AT and their "bureaucratic elite" are ignoring the public, destroying our quality of life, imposing their draconian woke ideology on the ratepayers and taxpayers and now deliberately plan to destroy one of the most heavily used, correctly laid out & obviously already efficient thoroughfares in the Auckland City area.

Please do me the courtesy of reading the attached propaganda, understanding that "improvement" to AT means "ruin" to everyone else and then writing to Dean Kimpton - the hideously overpaid CEO of Auckland Transport and require that his team stop this idiot project & change to concentrate on projects that are needed rather than this mindless spending of at least $28,000,000 on a project that is simply wasteful, unneeded and will detract rather than "improve" commuters and local residents experience.

Could you please write & let me know what direct action you will be taking minister?

The public are sick to death of AT and their determination to waste billions of our dollars on unnecessary projects, such as GNR, cycleways, raised pedestrian crossings, traffic lights every 200 metres, bus stops built out into the traffic lanes (what on earth is that about?), & imposing a 30 kmph speed limit!

AT are absolute madness personified

Ps. This money could easily be seed money for the new harbour crossing!

Sarisa Nasinprom and Nigel McKenna - what a lovely couple they are. Sarisa has recently opened Sa-Ni Spa in the Absract, Auckland’s newest hotel - their Italian restaurant has attracted a great chef in Gabriele Marangoni. The good news is that their rooms start from $150, very well priced - while the smallest may lack in size there are plenty of spaces to work, eat, drink - we love it.

Letter to the Editor: Ponsonby News: Creating connections...

Back in 2021, Bernard Vinson, the export director of Ligne Roset rang Ponsonby News to place an advertisement for a new partner to run the Auckland branch of the much loved French furniture brand..

Locals Matt and Mon saw the ad and got in touch with Bernard, as they told Ponsonbuy News, "your publication has a special place in our hearts.

"Our journey to represent Ligne Roset here in NZ started in response to an advert in this local magazine. Martin, Jay, Gwynne and the team have always gone the extra mile for us and after weathering our first three years in business we return the favour by making a donation to your 'Give a Little' page. Here's to Ponsonby News beating this current storm and continuing to support the community and local businesses into the future."

Ligne Roset have recently moved to share showroom space with the team at Designer Rugs - they are based at No.1 Grosvenor Street directly behind the corner of Great North Road.

Lost Ring found..

Last Friday, 12 July, a ring was discovered on the footpath close to the Ponsonby Foodcourt

As one of readers tells us, "I was in Auckland and getting breakfast on Ponsonby Road when I saw a shiny object on the footpath near the Ponsonby Food Court, when I picked it up it was a ring. I went off to run a workshop and planned to post something about having found it but alas I forgot and have just found it in my handbag.

"Given your FB page is known and loved by Ponsonby I wondered if you could post something about it? It's a sterling silver, hand beaten band. The size is very small, about an L or size 5. There are two initials stamped inside it - and if someone's lost it then they should know what those initials are.

"I was walking back to the car from Bodega and spotted it. I can't quite recall exactly which store it was outside but it was in the block by the Foodcourt. It was so freezing outside on the Friday morning and there was nothing open in that block at the time.

"If anyone thinks it's theirs they should know the two initials stamped inside the band. If it's yours please email [email protected]

Great North Road improvements - an update from AT

Auckland Transport (AT) is delivering walking, cycling and bus improvements along Great North Road, between Ponsonby Road and Crummer Road. The changes make the street safer for all users, especially those walking or cycling.

Work on this high-priority, transformational project is expected to start in October. Clear evidence shows that we can reduce harm, optimise the speed and efficiency of public transport network, and deliver improvements for businesses. At the same time, we’re improving safety and the road-user experience with road resurfacing, maintenance and intersection upgrades.

We’ll provide more information about what to expect during the construction phase (October 2024 to December 2025) once our construction plans are finalised. We will make every effort to stage and deliver the works with the least disruption possible.

Project benefits

More reliable public transport supported by better facilities
easier, safer travel on foot, by bike or by car
retained road capacity and traffic flow
better access for deliveries
improved amenities and streetscape
support for the growing residential population.

Project background

Great North Road is a major Auckland corridor, carrying large numbers of people in and out of the City Centre. The area is changing, with more residential apartments being built. Around the project’s section of Great North Road, the population is expected to grow approximately 24% by 2031.

Improved access to reliable public transport and safe walking and cycling are key, as many new developments have limited access to private vehicles. By making public transport, walking and cycling safer and more attractive, we can create better-connected communities and give people more options for how they move around the city.

Over the past 5 years (2019 to 2023), there have been 84 collisions. As part of the project, we will address road-user safety with road resurfacing, maintenance and intersection upgrades.

Project timeline

2016: consultation on a cycleway and improvements to Great North Road
2017 to 2021: design development and community engagement (project delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions)
2021: consultation on an updated design
2022: community re-engagement in advance of construction
September 2023 to March 2024: preparatory works (stage 1)
October 2024 to December 2025: main construction (stage 2) expected to start in October.

Construction

Preparatory (or enabling) works were completed between September 2023 and March 2024. This phase included creating tree pits, installing ducting and completing stormwater upgrades.

To check the underground terrain and its compatibility our plans, we dug a number of ‘test pits’ in the footpath along the length of the route. This will prevent problems or delays during construction.

For the next phase, we are confirming construction sequencing and traffic-management plans and will share this information before the work begins. We expect traffic management to be similar to the enabling works phase, with 2-way traffic maintained on Great North Road and short-duration closures on side streets as the work progresses.

Street design

The improvements include a protected cycleway, new and better-designed bus stops, pedestrian crossings and new loading zones. These changes will make accessing Great North Road safer and easier, whether by foot, bike, bus or car.

Bus lanes will be extended to cover the entire route, in operation from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday. Eight new bus stops will be built, with safe access across the cycleway to a waiting area. Some existing bus stops will be moved, to be closer to pedestrian crossings and improve bus efficiency where stops are currently a short distance from each other.

Raised tables and kerb build-outs on side streets and 2 new signalised pedestrian crossings will improve safety for people moving around Great North Road, including children at local schools. To create space for bus lanes and the cycleway, we’ve removed the flush median along the route, but drivers will still be able to turn right to access side streets and businesses. Great North Road will also be a greener street, with around 60 native trees.

Detailed design

As part of the design process, we assessed all elements from a safety perspective, considering the needs of all road users to ensure that the project is delivered in a pragmatic way. We determined that the signalised crossings on Great North Road (including the 2 new crossings) achieve the desired safety outcome without the need for speed tables. The design remains otherwise unchanged and includes adding raised tables to 23 side-street entrances.

Parking

Through consultation with the Great North Road business community, we’ve heard that on-street parking near to shops and businesses is important. Along the 1.65km route, we’ve retained parking where possible but have prioritised safety, accessibility, and the movement of people and goods.

We’ve also worked with businesses to ensure access for deliveries is reflected in the new street design, including the introduction of 5 large loading zones suitable for vehicle transporters.

Since public consultation in 2021, we’ve removed several parking spaces on Great North Road after a review of sightlines showed that cars parked in these spaces obscure visibility for people turning from side streets.

To address this, we are investigating time restrictions and paid parking on side streets. This will offer flexibility in length of stay and make it easier to find a parking space along the corridor. This will not affect existing residential parking zones.

Where installing speed tables and kerb build-outs at side-street entrances affects parking spaces, changing parallel parking to horizonal parking will ensure we retain the same number of spaces.

Trees and planting

Around 60 native trees and landscaping will replace 23 trees being removed to accommodate the new street design. Species to be planted include tītoki, rewarewa, cabbage tree, kānuka, pōhutukawa, horoeka, nikau and kōwhai. Each new tree will include low-level planting around its base. Bus stops and kerb build-outs will also be landscaped with species including rengarenga, maurea, toitoi, coprosma, koromiko and flax.

Safety

This project was designed to significantly improve safety along this stretch of road. Between 2014 and 2019, there were 11 serious injuries along the route. There have been 139 recorded crashes in this timeframe, with more than 80% occurring at intersections.

Crashes involving vulnerable road users were clustered around intersections, with 13 crashes involving motorcyclists, 7 crashes involving pedestrians and 7 crashes involving people on bikes.

By installing a cycleway, crossings and raised tables across side streets, the project will make travel safer for everyone, especially vulnerable road users.

Strategic context

Auckland Transport’s strategic network plan, Future Connect, identifies this section of Great North Road as having strategic importance for people walking, cycling, driving and using public transport.

This project also helps deliver on The Auckland Plan. The Plan calls for improving the “safety, personal security and attractiveness of walking and cycling alternatives” and “investing in and integrating public transport and walking and cycling networks to provide convenient and efficient alternatives.”

Public feedback

Consultation was open from March to May of 2021. We received 274 submissions through our online survey, feedback forms and email. We also received 192 data-drops on the social pinpoint platform.

Letter to the Editor: Ponsonby News spreading the good word in the community and creating new babies!

Here’s an interesting story: a few years ago, I advertised in Ponsonby News for a s***m donor, and one came forward and kindly donated to Fertility Associates.

I didn’t end up using the donor as I met someone and had a child, however, I did follow up with Fertility Associates as to what happened with his donation; they told me he had come forward and offered to make some donations and as a result there are many happy women out there with children donated by this extraordinary kind man, all thanks to my ad in Ponsonby News.

So not only is Ponsonby News spreading the good word in the community it is creating new ones too.
