In 2014, the 'artist', and I use the term loosely, Juliaan Andeweg was a guest at our festival. I am shocked and appalled by the in depth research done by NRC about this stain of a human being. I, and we, have not heard of any incidents during the 2014 festival with this man, but if you have HAD an incident during , I urge you to get in touch, anonymous if you want.

We pride ourselves of being a yearly gathering of like minded, positive, creative people, but it appears some rats have infiltrated us inthe past. You can reach me on my email vincentkoreman at gail dot com at ALL TIMES if you wish to talk about this or ANY OTHER case of inappropriate behaviour during our festival or events. And I will do whatever I can to aid you.

THIS WILL NOT STAND!

A lot of people have used the word 'supergroup' to describe a band made up from members of a lot of dif other bands. They usually do this if the bands the folks played in before are somewhat known. The other use if if the band is just freaking mind blowing and cool. Either might be the case here with southern Netherlands' Lungworm who have just released their debut EP through Smithsfoodgroup DIY. 6 tracks in 10 minutes, furious with lyrics about taking down the 1% by any means necessary.

Our fellow music lovers over at De Link Tilburg are kicking off their new season in less than a week. Ever since 1998, they host concerts at the charming chapel of Het Cenakel every other tuesday night. First one on the bill is the wonderful Ensemble Klang featuring avant-garde organist Kit Downes, who's worked with the likes of Squarepusher, Thomas Strønen and Django Bates. A true metal icon has passed. Michiel Eikenaar of lost his battle with the most terrible of diseases.

"Death comes for all of us. It comes for the strongest, the brightest and the most loved, and Michiel was all of those things and much more..."

It is with devastating sadness that I share the death of my brother on the left hand path, our singer and black metal icon Michiel Eikenaar.

Loved and respected by his peers and the international community. A commanding frontman and fantastic lyricist, a great visual artist, but above all, a big friendly loveable guy. Death comes for all of us. It comes for the strongest, the brightest and the most loved, and Michiel was all of those things and much more.

He leaves two small, beautiful children, a sweet and lovely wife, a close family that supported him through these difficult times and an international inner circle of friends and admirers that will miss him every hour of every day.

We were working on a fifth album, to be called 'Seven Trumpets Of Doom'. Those recordings will join him in the great beyond. // NIHILL will cease to exist today, right now. I will continue as ULVEBLOD. Jelle will continue with Terzij de Horde. Our live aids Michel & Jasper will continue as/with DODECAHEDRON.

Burn a candle, raise the chalice, wield the scythe. Rest in peace my friend.
Vince

Northwest - London

From via : Northwest have just shared an 11 minute video of their song 'London', which is really more of a short film in the german style. Their music is a rich brew of and electronica with gliding, ethereal vocals on top. Its recalls some 4AD stuff from the '80s and '90s but without being a clone of that well-known sound. Please check out their great album "I" here: https://thisisnorthwest.bandcamp.com/album/i

Incubate: catalyst for cutting-edge culture

NO, there will not be another Incubate Festival, that ship has long sailed. BUT there will be something else. We notice a lack in good, honest, independent media for the obscure, the weird and the wonderful and will be attempting to start filling that void.

The incubate channels still have a hefty 25.000 followers, people that have trusted our tastebuds for cutting edge culture for over 12 years. We also still have a giant vault of high quality recordings of Incubate shows, video for years and a mega-filled digital rolladeck with artists that have something to say.

Expect weekly reviews, previews, news and interviews. Expect a lot of info on bands you have never heard of and on influential bands from the past. Expect the unexpected!

Dead Neanderthals Endless Voids (snippet) || live @ Theaters / Incubate || 21-09-2014

Do you miss Incubate festival as much as we do?
Since the third week of September was traditionally the week of Incubate, we decided to ask a bunch of former staff members, visitors and artists to share their favorite Incubate-experience with all of us.

Rene Aquarius of Dead Neanderthals remembers the Endless Voids performance in 2014:

"It was a simple question: "Can you describe your favorite Incubate show?" But after literally seeing hundreds of bands, that's really impossible. That's why we decided to stay closer to home and tell about a very special show that we played ourselves on Incubate: Endless Voids.

Everything about that performance was Incubate: from Vincent asking us just 2 months in advance, saying: "You have two hours for a performance and you have to end up playing with five people, can you make that work?", to us making a huge deal out of it and inviting guest musicians from abroad, ánd deciding we wanted to record the performance for a possible album release at a later date.

But in one way or another everything worked out. The audience was excited, the recordings came out great, new collaborations emerged (Dirk Serries & Colin Webster) and old relations were strengthened (Peter Johan Nÿland & Trepaneringsritualen).

We still cherish this memory which for us symbolised what Incubate was: sometimes bigger-than-life, sometimes a bit of a shoestring operation, but always great and good at heart.”

Japandroids - Adrenaline Nightshift || live @ 013 / Incubate || 16-09-2012

Do you miss Incubate festival as much as we do? Enjoy these flashbacks and add your own in the comments.

Tjeerd van Erve, longtime visitor and reporter for the Daily Inktubate, remembers JAPANDROIDS in 2012 (and much more):

“When I was asked to put one of my best Incubate memories to paper, I had the instant inclination to write about that one concert on Incubate that I had been looking forward to the most: Japandroids on the closing night of the 2012 edition. ‘Celebration Rock’ was my soundtrack for that year, making me feel 16 again, even though I was closing in on 40. It was the show I had been looking forward to for a whole week, and the duo delivered. Actually, they did more than that. It turned out to be everything and more, complete mayhem in an exploding venue of Poppodium 013, with a mob of youngsters and old youngsters tumbling over each other behind me, whilst I was fist pumping and shouting along with every song with my chest against the stage. Good times. The best times.

But it was thanks to Facebook that I came to the realisation that this one show was not my only highlight of over a decade of Independent Underground. For some reason this platform thinks it is important to remind me daily of better times. Painful memories sometimes, but mostly good memories, because that's what we mostly share through the social media; how freaking great we are doing. So the last few days, actually weeks – starting late August, I have been confronted with pre-Incubate and Incubate pleasure I used to have. Photos of bands that made a lasting impression, words written in euphoria of this new discovery or that old favorite that I had finally seen live. Me being completely in love with seven days of the best of "the underground".

And then one memory that actually made me shed a tear. A review I wrote three years ago about a night that started with This Will Destroy You and ended with 65DaysOfStatic. A great night, as most days on Incubate were. But it was that night that I realised that one day, five, six or seven years later, I would take my sonds to the festival. Or at least dreamed that one day I would and dared to imagine how that would be, Incubate as an evening out with the family. And I wrote a review on how this would be, if it had happened that night. My sons' first Incubate.
I read my own review and reread it.
And then I felt a tear rolling, slowly down my cheek.
This submersion, this love of the subversive, the outsider and the celebration of freethinking was something my sons would not experience.
My bubble has been bursted, the dream remains a dream, nicely put in a review.
But nothing more.

Incubate, you were my carnival. Every September. A leisure park for geeks like me.
And it would be a shame, a pity and unworthy to all great experiences that you've brought me, all good Facebook memories that now pass by, to pick just one show to show your greatness.
But Japandroids was fu***ng awesome."

Since the third week of September was traditionally the week of Incubate, we decided to ask a bunch of former staff members, visitors and artists to share their favourite Incubate-experience with all of us.

Niek Nellen, former marketeer, remembers mayhem with Tweens in 2014:

"I wanted to write a pretty, sappy story about how Incubate shaped me as a person, how I looked up to the people who organized this amazing event, how I learned to love unlistenable Russian slam noise metal fusion (just to name a genre) or how I learned that with passion and vision a festival can be so many things at once.
But those are feelings and feelings are hard to describe to people who have not experienced them firsthand. So instead I'll share a memory.

Bob Verhagen and I had a chance to book our own night at Incubate with Nightbirds: the venue was De Stadskelder. We booked one of our favorite bands ever, Tweens, and had our friends make party hats with p***ses on them. We spent the entire weekend running around, stressed out of our minds, checking off all the boxes on the band's riders and worrying about whether people would show up.

When Tweens started playing around 2:30am in the tiny venue, the crowd turned into a freaking snakepit with every single attending (absurdly inebriated) person seemingly attacking the band. There was no stage so all the guitar pedals immediately got knocked out and the band had to briefly quit playing after half a song. Me and Bob and some other people had to form a human shield to allow the band to continue playing. It was total mayhem - afterwards the owner had to wipe actual footsteps from the ceiling.

I did not enjoy a single second of that night. It was terrible, stressful and I admit a bit scary (I seriously thought people would get hurt).
Now, it is one of my favorite memories.

I will never forget being part of something that brought so many people together - only one of the many amazing Incubate nights i've experienced (although this one was ours).

On the picture I'm wearing the #1 crown. My face tells you everything about how I felt that night. Also in the picture: Joep Schmitz wearing a p***s crown, the great great band Tweens and my buddy (and co-Nightbirds guy) Bob Verhagen picking up people. Picture by Tom Roelofs."

Pneu - À Coup de Couteau Denté

Do you miss Incubate festival as much as we do? Enjoy these flashbacks and add your own in the comments, if you want!

Bas van Duren, head honcho of 3voor12/Tilburg and longtime visitor/supporter, remembers Pneu:

"To pick a stand-out show after not missing a single edition of Incubate is nigh impossible. Like the trip the festival was, many performances are tattered memories, but it’s the show of French mathrock duo Pneu in 2009 that somehow always comes vividly to mind.
One of Tilburg’s smallest venues, Kaffee Buitenbeentje, hosted two scrawny Frenchies: one guitar player in front of a stack that towered over him and a drummer with a kit that lacked toms, but compensated with a double bass pedal. With the band set in the center of the pub, the whole crowd was practically hanging on Pneu’s lips. What followed was one of the most insane half hours recorded in history, filled with breakneck speed drumming, layers upon layers of noise, solo’s, burst ear drums and bits of dandruff flying through the room.

I remember the windows fogging up, extatic faces everywhere and thinking ‘F**k yes, this is exactly the kind of show that defines Incubate’; extremely loud and incredibly close."

Max Majorana, former intern, remembers Joop & Jessica in 2008:

"I started working for Incubate as an intern 3,5 years ago, and have felt part of the enduring family ever since. Yet the very first show I attended was performed at ZXZW 2008 by the rigid, anachronistic Dutch folk duo Joop & Jessica in Kaffee Buitenbeentje.
My longtime friend De Koning der Dieren (Incubate 2014) must have had an idea of what to expect, but simply summoned ‘Let’s go there, It’ll be fun’. I vividly remember the intensely dense atmosphere at the venue. The bar had to be closed while Joop & Jessica’s performance lasted. Even though a smile and a cheer were tolerated more or less, there was this real awkward tension during the gig caused by people who couldn’t hide their adoration for these two.
By the end of the show, roaring with saved up laughter caused by their silly song about Geert Wilders (a Dutch far-right politician), I was feeling embarrassed and blessed simultaneously. I was an introverted 20-year old journalism school dropout and slow explorer back then (which I still am, to some degree) and this particular show introduced me to underground music and leftfield art - for which I’m grateful, since I don't know a better circumstance in which I would’ve been able to be so."

Dan Deacon live @ 't Schop / Incubate 18-09-2010

Do you miss Incubate festival as much as we do? Enjoy these flashbacks and add your own in the comments, if you want!

Koen Gijsbers, longtime visitor/supporter and extensive YouTube-archiver, remembers Dan Deacon in 2010:

"Even with the help of an extensive log I’ve kept on YouTube over the years it’s damn near impossible to pick one favorite Incubate experience. There have been so many great moments.
Most precious to me has been the sense of community. ‘We Are Incubate’ really resonated with me as I did feel part of the festival! Even as a, admittedly fanatic, visitor.

I also loved how Tilburg, my hometown, as a physical space changed for me during the festival. Walking from venue to venue (some I’d never been to before) via alleys and streets I cross and pass on a daily basis but don’t really register throughout the year. Different angles, different context. During Incubate the city centre became one big venue and I experienced it in a whole new way. It felt more as home than it ever did.

But let’s pick one of my favourite moments, incidentally not in the city centre but at the farmyard of Biologische boerderij 't Schop in Hilvarenbeek. Unfamiliar with the artist Dan Deacon I took a chance and hopped on the bus to the farm.
I would describe the small party that followed as condensed. From the word ‘go’ everybody went crazy. It didn’t last long but it was made sure it went on as long as possible. In the video, at 1:42, Deacon gets notified the bus to bring everybody back would depart 10 minutes (or so) later than planned. Mere minutes after the show ended we were all back in that bus."

From the Incubate website: Dan Deacon is a Baltimore, Maryland-based electronic music composer/performer. Influenced by artists like Devo, Talking Heads, Scr...

Peter Meeuwsen, former booker (2009-2014) remembers Natural Snow Buildings in 2011:

'"If you’re tired of the faux-eclectic ‘one black artist, one improv band, one woman singer songwriter’ bill that’s been passing for musical diversity of late, then here’s where you’ll find something that might genuinely surprise and delight."
(The Quietus about Incubate 2010)

Damn right, were we hungry for the energy of the new, for artists pushing boundaries, for those who have something to say, even have something different to say than others. Incubate offered something different than others. A musical diversity unsurpassed by any other festival.
During my years at Incubate I had the chance to listen to new and old music 24/7 and invite the most interesting artists I stumbled upon. My biggest help was the Incubate community recommending all their favorite artist discoveries. I don't remember who recommended the obscure duo Natural Snow Buildings from France, who hardly ever perform, but their show turned out to be one of my favorite Incubate performances. Their ambient folk drones with the natural reverb of the Pauluskerk (Tilburg) was pure magic."

Sietse van Erve (Orphax, Moving Furniture Records) remembers his showcase in 2016:

“I have never been very nostalgic, but this year there seems to be something missing: it’s the absence of Incubate.

My first edition was in 2007, as a musician. The last (September) edition I visited in 2016 was as a musician. That is 10 years of great memories of music, hanging out with friends, making new friends to hang out with the next year, etc.
To choose one highlight is rather difficult, but if I have to, I pick the September 2016 edition. Earlier that year I asked Vincent Koreman if I could do a special Moving Furniture Records showcase: two nights with a total of 8 acts, some with releases on Moving Furniture Records, some with who we'd like to work as they are great musicians and good people. Zeno van den Broek, BJ Nilsen, Tasos Stamou, Edgars Rubenis, Microseq, TVO, Aiden Baker & Tomas Järmyr, and I could do my own Orphax performance.
This took place in the best venue for this kind of experimental music: Paradox Tilburg. Most of the shows were well visited by an enthusiastic crowd, and getting this opportunity is really something I will never forget.

And the other highlights, of which are so many...for example going to see Sunflare as someone recommended me and being blown away 100% (2012); walking into a Neige Morte show by accident because Mayhem was disappointing (2013); seeing my teenage heroes PWOG (2016); going crazy with the whole crowd at the second time Frank Fairfield played at Incubate (2012), and so on. And of course all the countless times I sat outside Cul de Sac, or Extase or just somewhere on a street with friends, some who will stay in my life for ever and others who will be missed dearly, due to the disappearing of my favorite festival.”

Arthur Janssen, former assistant-booker (2015-2016) remembers Bert Scholten (2016):

“I was and still am an Incubate-newbie - the first time I attended the festival was in 2015, the year I started working there. Still, in my two years at Incubate I saw more shows than I can remember. It's hard to pin down my all-time favorite Incubate show but I guess what I loved the most was Bert Scholten's four-day residency at NS16, where visitors could choose a song from his repertoire which he would then play on the spot.
Bert's work and performances just fit what Incubate was all about so perfectly. To have worked on this project is something that still makes me happy. I think it's incredibly cool that we did projects like that in the context of a music festival and managed to make it work. Next to that, I also had the best time hanging out with my buddy Bert and hearing his songs over and over and over…”
