Today, Warri Kingdom remembers one of her great sons, the first minister of Finance in Nigeria, Chief Festus Okotie Eboh, also known as Omimi Ejo, who was assassinated on January 15th, 1966, in the first coup of Nigeria.

May your soul continue to rest in peace. You are immortalized in our hearts for the great works you did in Itsekiri land. We pray that the state and the Federal Government should immortalize this great hero as a sign of respect for his great service to the nation.

Your pioneering efforts as the Federal Minister of Finance led to the implementation of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system of taxation. You presented the Bill, which was passed into law by Parliament.

You also advocated for an independent Nigeria to issue its own currency through its own Central Bank and MINT, instead of depending on the West African Currency Board. This resulted in the establishment of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1958. Apart from the pioneer Governor, who was an expatriate, all others on the board and co-signatories on the banknotes were Nigerians appointed by the Finance Minister. Hence, you can rightfully be called the founding father of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The first set of Nigerian currency was released in 1959 in preparation for independence in 1960. In recognition of this achievement, local musicians in the Western Region composed a song, part of which reads, "Okotie-Eboh gb'owo tutun de," meaning "Okotie-Eboh has introduced new money."

In addition to overseeing the establishment of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the introduction of the first National Currency, you also oversaw the establishment of the Securities Commission, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and the creation of the first Nigerian Investment and Development Bank.

After establishing the Central Bank of Nigeria and other financial institutions, you restructured the Nigerian Customs by making it a part of the Ministry of Finance. This ensured that the responsibilities of the Nigerian Customs extended beyond the collection of import and export duties at the ports. The creation of the Preventive Services helped combat smuggling and protect local industries. This initiative revitalized the Nigerian Customs. You were a statesman and a patriot who was cultured, progressive, and dynamic.

When the British and American governments denied your request for grants to build the Eko Bridge, you passionately appealed to the German government, and your request was granted through the commissioning of Julius Berger by the German government for the ex*****on of the project. However, the construction of the Eko Bridge began during the subsequent military government. Similarly, the Ikorodu Road in Lagos, the East-West Road, and the Effurun to Port Harcourt road were planned during your tenure. Unfortunately, the road from Koko in Delta State to Lekki in Lagos State, which should have been constructed by subsequent governments after the January 15, 1966 coup, remains a mere concept.

In 1959, you helped secure an external loan of Ten Million Pounds Sterling (£10,000,000) at a time when Nigeria's financial resources were insufficient to meet its development aspirations. Part of this loan was used to extend the Eastern railway line from Jos to Maiduguri, while the rest was utilized for the upgrading of the Lagos port at Apapa.

Apart from your successes at the national level, you also accomplished great feats in the Warri division by establishing the following projects:
- The Escravos Bar Project, aimed at sustaining and improving navigation of the Escravos Bar by ships
- The location of the Gulf Oil Company on Escravos (Ugborodo) despite pressure for it to be situated elsewhere
- The establishment of one of the three Inter-Regional colleges (Now Federal Government College Warri)
- The development of phases I & II of the Koko port facilities
- The construction of the Ologbo to Koko motor road
- The planning of the Koko to Ogheye motor road project, in conjunction with the planning of the Ugheli-Patani Port Harcourt road project
- The construction of the floating jetty at Ode-Itsekiri
- The establishment of Omimi Plastics and Omimi Shoe factories in Sapele
- The establishment of schools in Sapele
- The construction of a memorial Baptist Church in Sapele, equipped with organs
- The establishment of a cement packing factory in Koko
- The early stages of developing a factory for cocoa-based products at the time of your passing

Rest in peace, the greatest Itsekiri politician of all time. You will forever remain a legend in Nigerian politics.

Copied.

*13 Quotable Quotes from President Tinubu's New Year Address to Nigerians*

"Everything I have done in office, every decision I have taken and every trip I have undertaken outside the shores of our land, since I assumed office on 29 May 2023, have been done in the best interest of our country".

"Over the past seven months of our administration, I have taken some difficult and yet necessary decisions to save our country from fiscal catastrophe. One of those decisions was the removal of fuel subsidy which had become an unsustainable financial burden on our country for more than four decades".

"Dear Compatriots, take this from me: the time may be rough and tough, however, our spirit must remain unbowed because tough times never last. We are made for this period, never to flinch, never to falter. The socio-economic challenges of today should energize and rekindle our love and faith in the promise of Nigeria. Our current circumstances should make us resolve to work better for the good of our beloved nation. Our situation should make us resolve that this new year 2024, each and everyone of us will commit to be better citizens".

"Just this past December during COP28 in Dubai, the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and I agreed and committed to a new deal to speed up the delivery of the Siemens Energy power project that will ultimately deliver reliable supply of electricity to our homes and businesses under the Presidential Power Initiative which began in 2018. Other power installation projects to strengthen the reliability of our transmission lines and optimise the integrity of our National grid are ongoing across the country".

"My administration recognises that no meaningful economic transformation can happen without steady electricity supply. In 2024, we are moving a step further in our quest to restart local refining of petroleum products with Port Harcourt Refinery, and the Dangote Refinery which shall fully come on stream".

"To ensure constant food supply, security and affordability, we will step up our plan to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmlands across the country to grow maize, rice, wheat, millet and other staple crops. We launched the dry season farming with 120,000 hectares of land in Jigawa State last November under our National Wheat Development Programme.
In this new year, we will race against time to ensure all the fiscal and tax policies reforms we need to put in place are codified and simplified to ensure the business environment does not destroy value. On every foreign trip I have embarked on, my message to investors and other business people has been the same. Nigeria is ready and open for business".

"I will fight every obstacle that impedes business competitiveness in Nigeria and I will not hesitate to remove any clog hindering our path to making Nigeria a destination of choice for local and foreign investments".

"We will work diligently to make sure every Nigerian feels the impact of their government. The economic aspirations and the material well-being of the poor, the most vulnerable and the working people shall not be neglected. It is in this spirit that we are going to implement a new national living wage for our industrious workers this new year. It is not only good economics to do this, it is also a morally and politically correct thing to do".

"I took an oath to serve this country and give my best at all times. Like I said in the past, no excuse for poor performance from any of my appointees will be good enough. It is the reason I put in place a Policy Coordination, Evaluation, Monitoring and Delivery Unit in the Presidency to make sure that governance output improves the living condition of our people.
We have set the parameters for evaluation. Within the first quarter of this new year, Ministers and Heads of Agencies with a future in this administration that I lead will continue to show themselves".

"Fellow Nigerians, my major ambition in government as a Senator in the aborted Third Republic, as Governor of Lagos State for eight years and now as the President of this blessed country is to build a fair and equitable society and close the widening inequality. While I believe the rich should enjoy their legitimately-earned wealth, our minimum bargain must be that, any Nigerian that works hard and diligent enough will have a chance to get ahead in life. I must add that because God didn't create us with equal talents and strengths, I can not guarantee that we will have equal outcomes when we work hard. But my government, in this new year 2024 and beyond, will work to give every Nigerian equal opportunity to strive and to thrive".

"For the new year to yield all its good benefits to us as individuals and collectively as a people we must be prepared to play our part. The job of building a prosperous nation is not the job of the President, Governors, Ministers, Lawmakers and government officials alone. Our destinies are connected as members of this household of Nigeria. Our language, creed, ethnicity and religious beliefs even when they are not same should never make us work at cross purposes".

"In this new year, let us resolve that as joint-heirs to the Nigerian Commonwealth, we will work for the peace, progress and stability of our country. I extend this call to my political opponents in the last election. Election is over. It’s time for all of us to work together for the sake of our country".

"We must let the light each of us carries - men and women, young and old - shine bright and brighter to illuminate our path to a glorious dawn".

A polygamous man dragged me in the village into his home to bless the new child of his SECOND WIFE.

I went into the home, gathered them, man and wives, prayed over the baby and on parents to be able to provide for the sustenance of the baby.

After that, I told them that if they have chosen to be Christians freely they have to work towards repairing the unholy union and have one man, one wife. The man smiled and said he'll work on it.

His joy was gigantic on having the priest praying for his child and as a new convert, it'll move him/them further towards perfection.

Did I bless their child? YES

Did I bless the polygamous couple?
YES

Did I bless their union? NO

Did they assume their union has been officialised or approved?
NO

This is an example of simple blessings for irregular unions which the Vatican is talking about which has nothing to do with blessing the marriage.

If this has always happened for cohabiting couples without marriage, divorced (and sometimes remarried) couples, single s*xually sinful individuals or other grave sins, then it's no issue if it's done for same s*x couples.

A blessing is just a sacramental and like other sacramentals, don't give grace automatically like sacraments, but can lead to grace when the person aligns himself to God's will. The church can't deny opportunities to push people to God's will.

Koryol SY "Fiducia supplicans" in simpler terms:

1. Blessings, not marriage: The Church understands blessings as ways to ask for God's grace and favour in various situations. This document clarifies that it's possible to bless same-s*x couples without recognizing their union as marriage.

2. No change in marriage teaching: The Church's teaching on marriage as between a man and a woman remains unchanged. This blessing gesture doesn't endorse their relationship but shows God's love for all.

3. Blessings come in different forms: There are formal blessings, like at weddings, and informal ones, like at shrines. This document focuses on informal blessings, where anyone, including those in irregular relationships, can ask for God's blessing.

4. Blessings show humility and need for God: Asking for a blessing expresses trust in God and a desire for his goodness. Even if someone's situation isn't perfect, they can still seek God's grace.

5. Blessings have limits: While the Church can offer blessings to everyone, it can't bless anything contrary to God's will. So, this blessing doesn't legitimize same-s*x unions but asks for God's guidance and love.

6. Discernment and respect: The document encourages pastors to use their judgment when deciding about such blessings. The setting and words should be clear to avoid confusion with marriage ceremonies.

7. Hope and openness: Ultimately, this document reflects the Church's desire to welcome everyone with God's love and mercy, even those in challenging situations. It's a step towards greater understanding and pastoral care.

Remember: This is a simplified explanation of a complex document. For a deeper understanding, consult the original text (the English version begins on pages 20 through 28) --https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/it/bollettino/pubblico/2023/12/18/0901/01963.pdf
